Cooler Guys - What's latest and greatest with coolers? (1 Viewer)

We got a Yeti cooler from my in-laws a couple years ago and while I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a cooler personally, I have to admit - this thing is awesome. We left our house Fri at 2pm for the coast to camp 2 nights. Put two bags of ice in the Yeti for the the food and have a different cooler for drinks that took another bag of ice.

On Sat afternoon, I had to replace the bag of ice in the drink cooler as all the ice had melted and the water needed to be dumped out.

Unpacking yesterday, Sunday at noon the Yeti cooler ice bags still had about 2/3 of their ice intact. That's some pretty nice technology there, Yeti.

RTIC has an ultra-light 52q cooler that is fantastic, 10/10 for me. Recommended by wirecutter as well, I think it’s the best hard cooler you can get and it’s $200. I don’t have much experience with the backpack/soft coolers that are getting more and more popular.

We got a Coleman Xtreme some years ago and its been awesome. We took it on a softball trip (now mind you we left it in the room most of the trip) but everything stayed cold almost the entire week. I put ice in it once then drained end of week and refilled.

I think this is the updated model

Icy beverages and shared meals, fuel the best times outdoors, and the Coleman® 316 Series™ Wheeled Cooler is the right choice for the job. Looking for multiday ice retention? TempLock™ FX insulation in the lid and body really holds the cold. Heavy-duty wheels and a tow handle go the long haul with ease. And, our 316 Series is made with 15% less plastic than comparable Coleman coolers. When you need a break, the Have-A-Seat Lid™ supports up to 250 lbs. and has 4 handy cup holders. Want more? The tethered drainplug resists leaks, the liner resists stains, and our EZ-Clean lid makes cleanup simple. This 62-quart model holds up to 50 cans and 26 lbs. of ice, so you and your crew will stay refreshed all day. From campsite to worksite, beach to bonfire, soccer field to stadium–Coleman helps you keep your cool.
  • FULLY INSULATED: Lid and body Keeps the Ice up to 6 days in temperatures as high as 90°F

  • HAVE-A-SEAT LID: Closed lid supports up to 250 lb

  • STAIN-RESISTANT LINER: For easy cleanup
  • EASY-TO-OPEN LID: Recessed lip for easier access to contents

ETA: The important thing is you have to close the lid. Meaning if you just let it drop close, it doesn't "seal"

Yeti coolers will keep the ice in good condition but their size is on the small size especially per dollar spent. I have never really thought they were worth the money but I don't need a cooler to keep ice for a week on a camping trip when I am out in the middle of nowhere. For my typical uses the Yeti definitely isn't worth the price to me. Other coolers do just fine.

Yea..I'm looking at 2, 3, and 4 night trips. Yeti is OUT

We have various RTIC coolers and have been pleased with them. Based on my experience camping with people that have comparable Yeti coolers the ice retention is about the same.

My major gripe with RTIC is that on the soft coolers you need to constantly use the zipper lube that comes with it because they are insanely difficult to open otherwise.

I have a couple ultra-light RTIC coolers, and I like them a lot.

We have one of these...

Sams has Igloo 150 quart Maxcold Coolers for $89.98. They are supposed to keep ice cold for a week. I'm thinking about grabbing one in case of power outages.

That's the size and type I use for day trips, wish it was Grateful Dead that's awesome.

Coolers all face some degree of tradeoff in weight, capacity, and cost.

Yeti and other rotomolded coolers (like RTIC) are generally the best at extended hold, but are heavy and have significantly less capacity per exterior cubic inch. If you need to hold ice for extended trips, these are the play. I personally don’t use my RTIC much due to capacity/weight.

The next tier like RTIC Ulralight and Igloo Max Cold / Xtreme will do an admirable job for several days as well, and will be lighter and more efficient with space. Love these for weekend camping or day long cookouts.

I have an Icemule backpack that does a great job for day trips to the pool or cookouts.

The BIGGEST factors in ice retention, IMO, are:

1) Starting cold. Pre-chill the cooler with a bag or two of ice before loading it. Also get your beverages as cold as possible beforehand.

2) Sufficient Ice: I had a buddy who would load up his 45qt Yeti, dump half a bag of ice over the top, and then ***** that his ice was gone the next day. look into how to properly load a cooler and use sufficient ice.

3) Open infrequently as possible. I don’t care what cooler you have…. If you’re opening it every 5 mins and/or leaving it open for too long, it’ll burn through ice.

Use a modified one this size for cookouts/parties/etc. I took a newer one drilled through the sides and added a strap so I can throw it over a shoulder. Decking it out with stickers from local breweries or vacation spots. My family calls it my Murse, I think it's pretty sweet.

Yo Yo

SAGE! and I also kinda like the Trailblazer colors, embodies those 70s and 80s color combos.

The 52-qt model looks rather nice in the blue color scheme

On sale right now in the middle of the summer, I honestly am not familiar with this brand but they are on my radar now.

-And "Bleep" me because I never heard of an ice mule but it looks absolutely perfect to take out to the tennis courts for 2 hours

25% off the Red, Blue and White...right on time for the 4th of July, definitely going to try one of these out.
Awesome job Icon, ty!

The 15L Red White and Blue Packmule is exactly the one I have. 👍🏼

Been using it about 6 months now and it’s held up well. No problem keeping a 12 pack ice cold for the day.

When done, it rolls up pretty small and weighs about a pound.

I'm not a big fan of "sitting on cooler guy". Unless both the cooler and all of its contents are owned by "sitting on cooler guy", get off your fat *** and let people at what's their's in the cooler. Or maybe think about buying a chair.

I'll add that using ice blocks/block ice help in ice retention. I use several ice blocks and mix in a bag or two of regular ice.

I grabbed the 10L and thought that would be good for just me going on and off the tennis courts
Otherwise I figure 6-8 cans and some ice, off to the beach.
I might get the 15L as well, whichever I decide on, send the other to the kid

It's perfect because you can just roll it up when not in use, not that a hard cooler is the end of the world in the back of a Subaru but this would free up more space.
Also seems like something that would be easier to keep up front when Mrs and I are going on longer trips

When I use my big RTIC cooler I always use a few juice containers or 2-liter bottles, fill them with water and freeze them. I load my food items on top of these, then put my drinks on the other side and dump ice cubes over them. This way my food items will never inadvertently get soggy from melted ice since they are propped up off the bottom of the cooler and the ice-filled bottles help limit how often I need to open the drain plug.

if you need this size... amazon makes a yeti knockoff and its great

Interesting. Who am I to question Amazon's business decisions but seems fascinating to brand it as Amazon so proudly.

A ton of the premium cooler game is tied up on brand name. Seems odd.
Note the second image is of someone peeling the Amazon label off
Are you allowed to keep beer in that, or is it only for human organs?

I am hoping the answer is both.

Can verify. I have added beer and my neighbors organs. Held ice for days
