Cory James (1 Viewer)

I was worried that they might go back to Heeney the grades were so bad on him last week. Guess there's nothing to worry about now.

Did anyone see the game?. Where did those tackles take place? I see that West had the best game of his career against OAK. West has been fairly pedestrian as a NFL RB to date.

Ravens are a top DST unit so it's not surprising that they were able to keep the Oakland offense off the field more than other teams have so far. Carr had 4 TDs but only 199 passing. Raiders DST isn't living up to the preseason hype/hope that they'd be improved but that's a good thing to own, really. Long drives by the opponent are great for starting ILBs. NO, ATL, then TEN .... the Raiders O looked unstoppable b/c NO & ATL truly can't stop anyone, and TEN is only marginally better.

James was notable, and it was mentioned on the broadcast, in that he had a lot of one one one tackle chances, and made the play.  He has some real nice open field tackles.  He's a really, really good athlete.

He's not going to have games like that every week, and some were down the field plays, but he looked better than Heeney.

He's young, and the big thing is he can get blocked if the linemen get to him.

One thing that has been surprising, is that the Raiders have gone with a DT rotation of Ward, McGee, Ward, and Autry.  Only McGee is a 300-pounder, and the big uglies, Dan Williams, and Jelly Ellis, have not played much aside from short yardage.  It seems like the team has been going to a more penetrating style, looking for disruption, rather than a brick wall.

So they make splash plays, but they also can give up chunks of yardage.  It's a double edged sword.  More big running plays, and James gets more chances.  But with that rotation, the linemen get to the LBs more.

LB1?  Nah.  But he looks like a starter right now.

So there's a very well-respected guy that had his own Raider Reddit, and now writes for the Raiders SB Nation page, and here's his thoughts on Cory James:

Cory James looked much improved from 1st to 2nd start

  • Noticeable improvement from last week.
  • 15 tackles and a forced fumble. And is always hustling around the ball.
  • BAL Center, Jeremy Zuttah was sometimes getting on top of him quite quickly and James was engulfed and could not escape
  • Generally seems to play bigger than 230 lbs. From his play, I'd guess 240+
  • More good than bad.
  • James-Love and Heeney-Hate are both a bit exaggerated at this point
Needle is definitely pointed Up for him.

  • He was reading and finding the ball quickly and aggressively ...
  • ... but also got out of position sometimes
Biggest (general) diff between James and Heeney :

  • James attacks what he sees
  • Heeney waits to make sure what he sees
  • IMO, it's easier to correct a mistake of action rather than a mistake of inaction.
  •

Just one guy's opinion, but he's pretty well-respected.

Those SB Nation team pages are really good, we need a thread where fans scour them for IDP tidbits.

West just popped OAK for 5.4 ypc. That's substantially more than previously this year and his career average.  That is against a MLB who is supposed to be decisive and find/fill quickly.

OAK just added Perry Riley, who put up decent (but not great) numbers as a starting MLB for WAS before he got hurt. He was cut in PS because he wasn't quite over his injury and WAS saved $5M.

I don't know if Riley can take James' job, but when West does that against a James led D, I can't help but advise caution in the face of some of the raving reviews.

Perry Riley already lost his starting job to Mason Foster before being cut.

The reason ?

These are his last 3 years grades from PFF

48.4 - 42.4 - 36.9

I would think the signing of Perry would be for depth since they lost Heeney.  From all the tweets, articles, coach interviews, etc. they Love James and believe they got a steal in the draft.

Didn't have a lot of chances most of the game.  Chargers played the whole half without a sustained drive, and in 2nd half they were going after Perry Riley in the passing game.

Just not a lot of chances.

Del Rio is apparently a big fan of Riley.

I think Riley did a great job, all things considered.  Showed up this week, and allowed the team to rest Malcolm Smith.  Seemed like they had him on Gates a lot, which is never a good look, but nice for the stat sheet.  But he was always in position, even when he got beat.  He was beat for the Gates TD when Gates was a split end, and a WR in the slot.  So there's Perry Riley, man up in coverage, 3 yards from the dang sideline.  I actually said out loud in the bar, ''TD Gates'', before it happened.  The Chargers actually ran a pick play, so Riley didn't have a prayer.

The Raider fans in the bar were all pretty complimentary of Riley, really.  Everyone agreed he did a good job in a bad circumstance for him to look good.

I put Riley in the same 3.99 bargain rack with Keenan Robinson, Phillip Wheeler, Sean Weatherspoon, etc.  Capable of stringing some games together, but they aren't taking the job of anyone decent.

Some

Do you like Cory James over Terrell Suggs, David Harris, and Todd Davis ROS?
Somewhat depends on the scoring but in general I would prefer James over that group.  the only thing that would change is if it was a high sack scoring league then Suggs might be in contention but I haven't really looked at Suggs' play recently.

My league gets bonus pts for 2+ sacks in one game, so Suggs' value is a little inflated due to week 3 - however, he's my highest LB performer through week 5. Looking at starts, James has averaged 19 pts/start whereas Suggs is 12.8, Davis is 11.9, and Harris (hamstring) is 9.8.

Looks like you answered your own question.  James seems to be the far superior scorer over the rest of the group based on your scoring system.

Perry Riley got the start over James today.  Too late for me to make an adjustment.  bah
I was wondering why he only had one point. Glad I started him this week. Probably going to cause me to lose. I've never seen a team flip flop so much on who their starting LB's are. Very frustrating!!

You clearly aren't following the niners situation.  Not counting bowman, it's went Ray-Ray, Hodges, Wilhoite, Bellore, and now back to Hodges as far as snap counts per game.

Sadly, I'm in the middle of both of these dumpster fires having drafted Bowman and the woefully underperforming Malcolm Smith. Been playing musical NoCal linebackers for weeks now and haven't guessed right yet. Had to cut bait with James. Can't do Riley - he's not the answer. Maybe Del Rio should channel his old Vikings days, strap on the pads and get the heck out there. It'd be better than what he's giving us now. Ugh.

Well for what it's worth snap counts in both cases were clear.

Riley 100%

Bellore 99%

Malcolm Smith 94%

Hodges 84%

James, Wilhoite hardly played. Skov didnt

Riley 100% and just two solos. He also garnered PFF's top score for the Oakland defense. I don't get it. Total offensive plays for each wasn't that lopsided, though running plays were decidedly in favor of the Raiders. Glad to see Bellore hanging there even with the defense continuing to get gashed by the run. Hopefully nothing changes (again) during the bye week...
