Costco Love <3 (1 Viewer)

My parents practically make a date out of Costco shopping. They know the times, days and locations of all the snacky snacks being offered and will go with the intent on shopping and catching lunch at the same time.

My dad did say he was sorry for running over some guys foot...
😂

had today off. popped over to Costco for a couple specific things.

place was absolutely full of retirees and women with kids. almost as busy as a Saturday afternoon but totally void of people between ages 6 - 65 except a handful of us.

When you paid for your items did you spend another 40 minutes enjoying a slice of pizza and a soda pop for 11 cents or whatever?
not this time. usually i would get a slice and then eat it standing in front of the ordering kiosk so that no one else could use it but i'd already eaten by the time i stopped at Costco today.

Our Costco is mobbed 24/7..... Well the hours they are open.

I can go over there on a random Tuesday or Wednesday, morning early afternoon evening just doesn't matter
Since inflation reared its ugly head, the Costco near us has gotten progressively worse. It’s a growing area as well so that doesn’t help when their hasn’t been a new Costco added in the 18 years that we’ve lived here. Used to be that I could run over Friday afternoon or a non-weekend night and there’d be bunches of close parking spots. In the past year it’s hard to find parking at all without waiting and that’s not me. I parked basically behind the Costco and walked on Friday.

I used to enjoy their Polish dog, but that's about it. Haven't had one in 10 years or more. Costco to me is a surgical strike. Park on the outskirts, bolt down the far aisle where electronics and office furniture are, dive into the back for TP, paper towels, zip in for coffee, olive oil and mixed nuts, then race to self check-out. Get in, get out, go to the bar. I see people waiting in line for pizza or whatever and just think 'why would you want to stay here longer than you need to'? Do you linger around the dentist office after your appointment is over, reading magazines just because you're there? So weird.
I love taking my time. Life is short. Plus you might run across something you like or need.

Yeah, yeah, yeah platitudes aside, there's a lot of life to be lived outside of a giant warehouse store. I see folks like you lapping up free samples and milling around like a dope and just can't understand that mentality. You lick up a Dixie cup of pudding and find joy in this? Not me, man. Would you linger around a 7-11 longer than you have to? Do you get gas and then just waltz around the convenience store because it's there? Just weird, man.
lol, that is not me.

I am still a guy. I have a plan upon entering. However, unlike most other stores, you never know when something new pops up at Costco.
I feel it's worth the extra time to hit the main aisles.

My tolerance for people just milling around when others are trying to conduct commerce and be on their way is very low. I'm not a 'browser'. I'm not looking to spend money on things that aren't 'essentials'. Costco makes sense for a family our size but I'm not bringing my entire family in there with me because I don't view Costco as some sort of treat. It's not an amusement park. The human cholesterol clogging up the aisles waiting for free samples or just leaving their carts perpendicular in the middle of the aisle is maddening.

But you can't beat it for coffee, olive oil, etc. Big fan of their giant sized spices and vanilla too. Want some edamame? Here's 50 bags for 10 dollars. Want some rolled oats? How's a bag the size of a Nissan Leaf strike you?
Maybe don't go at noon on Saturday. I have gone several times right before close. Nobody there.
I find closing time varies. Sometimes its a ghost town and other times I begin to question if they've extended the closing time for that night. My new go to is right at opening on the weekend. Its fairly crowded throughout the store, but the checkout is absolutely empty b/c everyone moves so slow. Even if I'm taking my time, you're still one of the 1st people to the front. It really is incredible how slow we move as a society. People shop like they're making life changing decisions.

I mean for what it's worth today I read every single wine price and producer and such in the wine aisle (the nicer ones not the ones with like a box of 12 available). Didn't seem too crowded even though it was 12:30pm.

Checkout line felt long, but took 6 minutes from back of line to done with checkout.

Their overly-doughy pizzas are certainly not a culinary delight.

But at $10, when I don't feel like dropping $50 locally, it scratches that pizza itch.

Costco drives me nuts

Actually, what I should say is the people shopping at Costco drive me nuts. It's like they get in some trance and forget basic rules of life, like how to walk down an aisle with any sort of purpose and/or velocity. Or how the main aisles get the right of way and you can't just slowly cross over from the snacks on one side over to the freezer without looking if someone is coming. Or how to not block a 20 ft wide aisle with just 1 cart and 2 people.

And the parking lot, forget about it.

I hate going to that place but unfortunately they have JUST enough to keep bringing us back every once in a while.

Wrong thread?

Team GM/gianmarco here. I hate the aimlessly wandering families. I try to go late during the week but occasionally have to go on a weekend and it really tests my patience.

A guy I work with said he saw me there once and said it looked like I was driving a Formula 1 car through a maze.

I used to enjoy their Polish dog, but that's about it. Haven't had one in 10 years or more.

This might be the actual impossible. 10+ years?

I'll take the UNDER.

They took it off the menu in Oregon circa 2013.
Guess I took the stinky bait!

We were all outraged after they abolished the polish hot dog option... for a few subsequent visits.

Mods please move to the Wienerschnitzel (or sandwich) thread.

We get our most of our stuff from Costco, and fill in the other stuff from TJ's (walkable).

Safeway (walkable) used to be in the rotation until they closed their nearby location.

While the prices at Costco and TJ's have slowly crept up since the pandemic, I was shocked at the prices at Safeway, i.e, national grocery stores. Most everything in there seemed to have doubled and felt like a total rip off compared to Costco/TJ's prices.

We have our list, but also enjoy keeping an eye out for new stuff.

A polite 'excuse me' with a smile goes a long way in navigating through the aisle blockers quickly.

The lack of social awareness is everywhere, whether it be walking, driving, shopping... it's not just a Costco phenomena.

I share your overall strategy for shopping, anywhere. But the key to Costco is shopping 30 min before they close. At least where I live, it's pretty empty at that time.

Oh yeah, the other Costco strategy is park the cart out of the way, then walk up and down a couple aisles to retrieve what you need. You should only navigate your cart around the store's periphery.

I'd be up for meeting both of you at a Costco, doing a live eat off with the samples while zipping through the store at above average rates of speed. The footage would be posted here and both threads could collide.

Then again, what's the point since no one can laugh at it, so nevermind.

my costco now sells sushi rolls and one of them has a 6 or 8 piece salmon nigiri with the rolls. They claim fresh daily but I haven’t been feeling well so I haven’t pulled the trigger on it yet. Probably will this weekend so i have lunch and dinner for rough 12-18 bucks

Tried this and found the rice to fish ratio is off. Fish very thin, rice not sweet or vinegary enough.

We haven't had the Polish for about 10 years but oddly its still on the current bumper sticker for nostalgia.

This. Also, the store has had the same layout for at least the past decade and the variety isn't plentiful enough to be wasting time mulling over your options. These are the same people who struggle with menu options at McDonalds. A number 7 large please, is it that hard???!!!???!!

We get like 10 things from costco....

Eggs
Milk
OJ
Detergent and Downy
Meat/Poulty
Irish cheese and butter
Oldest likes Bagel bites
Coffee
Produce
Collagen

Takes all of 10 minutes to grab those items.

Our regular list is:

Frozen egg fritatas
Snack packs of trail mix
Allergy meds

Occasionally:
Rotisserie chicken if we're there at a time they have them and don't already have dinner planned

No, Matthews. I’d love to go to the one being built in Indian Land but that won’t be ready for at least a year. It’s possible that we’ll sell the current house before then so who knows where I’ll be when that and the Ballantine Wegman’s is open. 18+ years and finally I’d have both close and with cheaper gas prices in SC and I might be somewhere else. :kicksrock:

Kind of surprised by these lists. There’s so many non-food things we get. Tide Pods, tons of toiletries, paper goods, garbage bars and kitchen items. I will probably be shopping much less frequently once’s the last boy is in college next Fall but when we were a house of 4 or 5, we’d run the dishwasher and clothes washer every day. The trash would get taken out every night and TP/paper towels would be gone quick. All of that stuff was way cheaper at Costco, especially if you pay attention to coupons since some things like Ziplocks or Sonicare brunch heads would alternate every other month.

My list is sorta what we get each visit. (Ill add papertowels/toilet paper to my list).

Sure, once in awhile, we will park the cart and browse for a specific item, (briskly) walk past the clothing section, walk through the middle isles where the (always junky) furniture and outdoor connect four games are. This is like a once every other month event. Maybe a season change.

We buy A LOT of stuff at Costco, its just that on the subject of how much time we spend inside the store, its sorta a paramilitary operation to get in and out as fast and with as few casualties possible.

You go to Tyvola? I'm surprised how busy it is even in the middle of the week.
:kicksrock:
Didn't know they were building one out there. That will definitely help the traffic at the others. Have only been to the Matthews one a couple of times, once for a Kamado Joe roadshow deal.

It was a sad sad day when I learned they discontinued the Polish.

However, I did learn today that you can still get a Polish dog at Costco in Canada, so there's that.

Team GM/gianmarco here. I hate the aimlessly wandering families. I try to go late during the week but occasionally have to go on a weekend and it really tests my patience.

A guy I work with said he saw me there once and said it looked like I was driving a Formula 1 car through a maze.
I'd be up for meeting both of you at a Costco, doing a live eat off with the samples while zipping through the store at above average rates of speed. The footage would be posted here and both threads could collide.

Then again, what's the point since no one can laugh at it, so nevermind.

We each get a list prior to going to Costco - a different list, prepared by a neutral third party so we go in completely blind. Same number of items, approximately same total cost, degree of difficulty the same for the three of us.

We each have to start from our vehicles parked together away from Costco and the race is on, so parking, strategy, etc is all in play. *NOTE* this will be a completely foreign Costco to all of us so no home field advantage.

Final task after paying for our items is ordering the same menu item from the food cart and devouring it with velocity, then it's off to our cars to load up and back to the starting line. First one there is the winner and gets to pick out tattoos for the losers, which will be both of you.

Are we supposed to post our shopping lists in here?

I will say that I do occasionally browse. Maybe one of every 3 or 4 visits the center section that rotates often with new items (non-food) and the clothing section. Maybe one every 10 visits the aisles opposite the food, where the home goods, auto, etc. is.

I will be buying a turkey from Costco as I think we're going to have 15ish people for Thanksgiving. Their birds are all 20+ pounds (at least that's how it's been in the past) so pretty hard to beat that if you're feeding a bunch of folks. Just not sure when the right day to go will be.

I know this is the <3 Costco thread but they really need to add the ability to scan items and checkout via their app like Scan & Go at Sam's Club. I despise waiting in line and Scan & Go combined with their new AI Checkout means I don't even need to show my receipt at the door half the time now either.

100% with you. We have our set staples we get and then once a season my wife will go through the clothes section to find deals on clothes for our kid since he seems to outgrow all of his clothes once a week.

Our regular list is:
Eggs
Meat
Shrimp
Dog food
Seltzer
Frozen egg fritatas
Snack packs of trail mix
Allergy meds

Occasionally:
Rotisserie chicken if we're there at a time they have them and don't already have dinner planned
Golf balls
Dog beds
Jameson
We also get the same stuff every time:

Sliced papaya
Blackberries
Blueberries
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Carrot juice
Coffee
Shrimp poke or Salmon
Almond milk

Every few visits we get Dave’s bread, pasta sauce, lentils, and garlic rice-quinoa mix.

Still, I like to quickly scan for “impulse buys” around the periphery of the store - the snack center aisles are off-limits. Probably try something new every other visit.

The non-food stuff is like once a year purchase if that as a single guy.

My regs are salad mix, mini tomatoes, whole wheat wraps, potatoes, rotisserie chicken breast, andouille sausage, milk, eggs, frozen veggie stir fry, frozen blueberries, black beans, chick peas, sardines, Rao's sauce, jasmine rice, dog food, cat food, coffee, better than bouillon, condiments. I think that's everything I buy. Its pretty uncommon for something else to make it in my cart.

With a two person household, that stuff all lasts several months, or longer.

its just the two of us now....... ill buy some electronics from costco on occasion but rarely shop there now - I just do it for the cash back

I hope you all are grabbing the two pack of Rao's sauce. Only jarred sauce worth having around and it is like 1/2 the price of everywhere else
Yep. Occasionally, they have Rao’s Eggplant Parm in the frozen food section. Like many of my top impulse selections, it has not become a permanent fixture, though it should be.
