Coughlin > Belichick (1 Viewer)

Of course we can't go back and prove what would have happened with or without the supposed advantage of spygate, any more than we can with the cowboys championships, which jimmy johnson admitted were won with the same supposed advantage. But we can see that the patriots haven't just won, but won more games in the five seasons since the incident than they did in the five prior, despite losing their first round pick. So the advantage appears to be minimal. (And yes, GB, I understand that you'll never change your mind on this, but I figured id post an explanation for the benefit of readers whose team hasn't been smoked by the patriots repeatedly during the Dynasty.)
Touche' Fred. (but don't forget the Steelers beat the Pats at their own game in 2011 and have won 2 SBs since "the Dynasty".)

The guy should have been suspended if not flat out thrown out of the league but instead the media calls him a genius. Crazy world we live in...
Because he coaches in Boston, and since ESPN dominates sports coverage and loves everything Boston or NY, Spygate is almost never mentioned anymore. Trust me, had the coach and team (of a dynasty) that plays in St. Louis, Houston, Minnesota or Arizona been caught doing what Belichick did, ESPN would never stop talking about it, especially when comparing that dynasty to dynasties of the past. It's funny, we are supposed to believe that the careers of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, etc. are all tainted because they all got caught doing something that supposedly "everyone does," but the Patriots dynasty is not flawed at all despite Spygate also supposedly being something that "everyone does." Just more ESPN bias rearing its ugly head.
Or maybe, the media, very belatedly, finally grasped what it was that the Patriots were actually punished for; filming from a forbidden location, NOT filming opponents' signals. Beyond that, maybe they even put together that there was never any indication that the Patriots engaged in the kind of behavior the rule was intended to prevent, and thus never gained any illicit advantage from the practice.
I think the NFL and the rest of the sports media knew it wasn't in their best interest to shed light on the matter further as their product is more attractive if their winners aren't cheaters. Too much money made on top teams perpetuating an honest winning image.Nice tery though.
Have you followed the sports media the last few days? They're talking about Brady's wife for Chrissakes. They're dying for any kind of storyline or angle. If there was a real story about how the Patriots actually "cheated" every reporter and their dog would be on it.
They did cheat, and were penalized for it.. Have you forgotten?
I haven't forgotten anything. They were punished for having a camera in a location that was disallowed by rule, as it would have been accessible to coaching staff during the playing of the game. That's the scenario the rule was intended to prevent. Their bad, and they were rightfully punished. But, there has never been any indication that the Patriots used those tapes in that way. If they had some elaborate system in place whereby the signals were stolen then relayed to Brady in real time on the field then that would be a HUGE story. But somehow, despite five years having passed and multiple players and coaches having come and gone, not ONE bit of information has been brought forth on how they supposedly did this.

Dude. You've been getting pwned in every which way in this thread. SUCK IT
Whatever you say, Dude. Let me try to make this simple; I oversee loss control for our company. We have a number of rules and policies intended to prevent employees from stealing. If they break these rules, they are punished. That doesn't mean they stole - in fact usually they didn't - but they did break the rules we have in place, intended to prevent such an occurence.

I find it laughable that you think the Patriots weren't using those tapes to their advantage. Why on earth would they be doing it if they weren't using them? There is (or should I say was) evidence of them using this technique at least as far back as the 2004 AFC Championship Game and possibly earlier. Unfortunately we will never know the full extent because the commissioner had the evidence destroyed to protect the credibility of the league. If this was merely a case of "oops there was one game where we had a camera in a location we weren't supposed to" there would have been no need to fine Belichick $500,000, take away a 1st round draft pick and destroy all of the evidence. You can believe they never used the tapes if you want to but I think you are being very naive.

You find it laughable that I believe something I never said I believe? I find that pretty laughable.I never said they weren't using them to their advantage. But, to the best of my knowledge - and I've tried to research the issue pretty thoroughly - the rules only prohibit using that kind of info in a game as that specific game is being played. The rules I've seen prohibit where taping is allowed to be done from, and who can have access to those tapes during that game, they don't say anything about what can, or cannot, be taped or how those tapes might be used to prep for future games. If there is a rule against taping signals, surely someone can quote it.

I don't think it was a one game "oops". It was clearly an ongoing practice. I also think BB had to know he was breaking the rules, so I really don't have a problem with the punishment. I do think he misjudged how harshly he would be condemned when it came to light, and I think this is likely because he wasn't using the tapes in the way that the rule was intended to prevent. Think about it, it's called "Spygate" but that's about the most misleading misnomer you could ever come up with; IT WAS DONE IN PLAIN VIEW ON THE TEAM'S SIDELINE. Belichik may be a lot of things, but he's not dumb. If this was such a despicable and unfair practice, wouldn't he have made some effort to make it clandestine, rather than being as obvious as he could possibly be?

You can call it being naive if you want, but I prefer to deal in facts over assumptions and speculation. Occam's Razor and all that. I think it's naive to think more wouldn't have come out by now, if it was there. Matt Walsh is a guy who had insiders knowledge and a major axe to grind with the Pats, but in the end, after much obfuscation and delay over indemnity and confidentiality agreements that never existed, he brought nothing that wasn't already known to the table. I believe he himself said he turned the tapes over when the game was done.

Enough said
while I wouldn't go quite that far, I will say that BB hasn't won anything since Crennel and Weis left after the 2004 season..each was with him from 2000-2004, and were major contributors to the Pats winning 3 SB's during that time frame.it's no coincidence that they haven't won the Big Game without either of these coaches.

While I think those guys helped and were BB's best staff I think that's far too generic of a statement...all you have to do is look at the talent level on D on the Super Bowl teams and compare it to the last five years to see what the big issue on D is...as I said earlier, do you really think there's anything different Romeo could do with this year's talent...overall, I do think there are issues on the staff as BB seems to surround himself with too many clones he has groomed...a few more experienced assistants (like a Weis or Romeo) would help but until there's more defensive talent, more overall play-makers and they become more physically imposing this team will have it's issues regardless of who's on the staff...
