Could Houston take a QB in the 1st round? (1 Viewer)

I was reading a recent chat with Mel Kiper. I know many here do not respect him, but his contacts/connections to teams are hard to dismiss. Anyway, he was asked if Von Miller is gone, who would the Texans look at in the 1st. He mentioned one defensive player and then both Gabbert and Newton as options. With defense a high priority in Schaub seemingly in his prime, is this a possibility?

Highly, highly, highly unlikely. We paid a $10M option to activate the last 3 years of his deal a year ago and the defense is a mess.

This is pretty much what I thought. It's one thing if a sure thing franchise QB falls in your lap, but this would not be the case.

In the first couple of rounds, Kubiak probably needs to get immediate impact players, so i doubt that I QB is in play that early. given the back-up situation, orlovsky terrible and Lienert gone, you might see the Texans take a development/ back-up type at some point though.

No way do the Texans take a qb in the 1st round. QB isn't a problem for the team, it's a strength, and Kubiak is on the hot seat.

And few teams, if any, have more needs on the defensive side of the ball than Houston.

Is there a precedent for drafting a QB in the 1st round when your starter is a pro-bowler under the age of 30? Has anyone done that, ever? Joe Montana was 31 when the 49ers acquired Steve Young (and they didn't spend a first round draft pick on him). Favre was 36.

I don't think it happens, but I think (I have no basis for this other than my own eyes) FF fans rate Schaub much more highly than NFL executives and personnel. I think they draft a QB next year if they don't make the playoffs.

Schaub just makes a lot of terrible mistakes at terrible times. He has good overall stats, but if you watch him play- it is hard to see him as a solution. He throws a lot of picks and has a ton of fumbles in key situations. A lot of guys would look good throwing to Andre Johnson.

In the past 4 years, they have been a shade less than 500 team when he plays, and have been 6-4 in the ten games he has missed. At some point, you need to play better.

I realize Brees was a Pro Bowl player in Rivers rookie season, but Brees was decent his first year as a starter and struggled more in his second year. He really hadn't been fully given a chance when they took Rivers and was still only 24.Here are some others that might better fit the question . . .PHI taking Kolb in the 2nd when they had McNabb (31).CIN taking Akili Smith in the Top 5 when they already had Jeff Blake (who had been a Pro Bowler) and was 28.PIT drafting Kordell Stewart in the 2nd when they already had Neil O'Donnell (who had been a Pro Bowler) and was 28.OAK drafting Todd Marinovich in the 1st when they had Jay Schroeder (29), who had previously been a Pro Bowl QB and who was coming off a 12-4 season.

I never truly understood why the Chargers felt compelled to take Rivers, sure he's done well but as you said, Brees looked like he could be okay and was still developing. Of course, the pick motivated Brees and the rest is history. Without it, who knows? Still, with the benefit of hindsight they could have had Larry Fitzgerald if they hadn't traded down. In a dream-world, even with the trade they could have had the 2 TE set with Gates and KW2.

Broncos draft Tommy Maddox in the 1st round when Elway was 32 and showed no signs of breaking down (and would play another 7 years).

Schaub can be awesome, but he can also be pretty bad. Thing is he is usually down 2 or 3 TDs so he needs to take some chances to move the ball.

He has a complete grasp of that offense, a nice touch dropping balls into space and a plus fastball. Houston's got bigger fish to fry then a new QB. Mybe 5th round, but not 1st.
