So on my drive in, I was listening to Elliot in the Morning, a DC-area morning show. I live in NJ, but stream the show because I've listened since I lived back in the DC area. Anyway, they had a caller who went by the name of "Brooklyn Joe," or something to that effect (not sure if it was Joe or not). Anyway, he claims that the guy who shot the footage was a good friend of his. He said that there was "major" parts of the story not being told. I'm just repeating what he said...
1) Lien was merging onto the highway, and he "sideswiped" a biker. Brooklyn Joe noted that it wasn't "sideswiped" as in hit, which is what I've ALWAYS taken that to mean, but rather that he drove really close to them. He then said that the bikers were trying to get Lien "to pull over to the right lane so they could go by." He said that he didn't condone the acts of the guy who brake-checked him, and he was dumb for doing that.
2) He said that in principle, bikers will all come to a stop and come to the aid of a rider riding with them who has fallen down. He said that was why they ALL stopped in the middle of the highway.
3) He said that when Lien freaked out, it was because everybody was yelling at him to back his car up because it was sitting ON the one guy's leg. They were just telling him to back up. Nobody was violent.
4) Nobody slashed his tires. There's no way an SUV could drive that far with slashed tires.
So...take it for what it's worth, but I think it's all full of crap. He probably came close when merging because these guys were all over the road. I'm not sure why they'd be trying to get him to merge to the right so they could pass when it was a 3-lane road. He also clearly couldn't really change lanes at all because he had bikes on both sides as shown
here. I guess maybe they were all yelling at him to back up, but I think it's pretty clear that when you have 50 guys on bikes surrounding you after driving like that, you might be a little on edge. I also don't necessarily buy that he was parked on the guy's leg when he came to a stop. The tires thing should be easy enough to figure out...either they were slashed or they weren't.
I'll end by saying Brooklyn Joe did say that he thought Lien "got what he deserved," so I think that's enough to discredit it all anyway. It just shows the mentality even more clearly. i.e. "This is our road, and if we want you to move over, you move over."
