Dan Dierdorf Hanging Them Up (1 Viewer)

FYI, he called Nelson's ~20 yard catch with 30 seconds remaining in the half to be "garbage yards". That drive ended with the Jets scoring a touchdown at the end of the half. One of the worst of all time.

Worst "number one team" announcer on a major network ever. Horrible voice, always clueless, and often unprepared.

One of the best ever and will be sorely missed in the booth. Always a delight to hear him call games, loved it when he was paired with **** Enberg

Oftentimes it's "cool" to bash a talking hairdoo because people see on the internet that he's bad - because some hipster tool on a blog says he is.

In this case, though, I really never liked Dierdorf. I won't miss him.

We need most of the announcers and studio people to retire. The vast majority are terrible. And why do the studios need a half dozen or more guys at the desk?

Who's the likely replacement on the #2 team? Gannon?
The best thing would be to let fans call the games. Especially fantasy football players since we know more about the game than perhaps even the coaches and players do. Rotate different fan crews every week.
I'm not the first one to say this, but I really, REALLY wish they'd offer a SAP audio option where there would just be game sounds - no announcers. I'd love it.

Won't happen because 1) some people won't know what's going on and 2) networks plug shows and stuff and I'm sure they will want audible promotions in addition to visual ones.

I think this was tried in the 80s and it flopped horribly. I think it's worth trying again. Fan tastes can change, and most people in the 1980s were really stupid anyway.

Yeah, I'm not sure it'd be popular. I just know I'd love it, as well as most of my buddies I watch with. With a nice surround system it sounds good.

As far as reason #1, that's why it'd be a second audio option. Those who don't know what's going on would use the regular audio.

A few years back during a Broncos game the network lost their audio for the entire half. It was great. You heard the game - and that's it. We were really surprised how much more you heard (coaches yelling, refs chatting, players calling plays, etc).

Yeah, I'd like it too. I think you can fiddle with the surround to decrease voice announcers. Axe the center channel and you could force this effect.

I think fox's Tim Ryan does a good job. Really tones it down compared to his Sirius show but he knows what he is talking about.

Tim Ryan is a diamond in the rough. Cant believe he does not have more exposure. Always gets the worst games on fox. Sirius aint the same without him.

Yeah, kinda did it to himself though because he lives in Cali and I think I heard him once say that he chooses the gigs that pretty much limit him to cards and raiders games, etc. not sure how that works, but it's kinda hard to get that footing when you are always up on the west coast. Seattle, zona, etc just isn't the same as if he could get a cowboys game.

NBC tried it many years ago. I think it was with a meaningless Jets Dolphins game in the 80's if memory serves. I watched it at the time and remember thinking boy as much as I dislike certain announcers, without them really seemed strange.

ESPN will be doing something similar for the BCS championship game. link

ESPN - standard broadcast

ESPN2 - live round-table discussion of the game as it happens

ESPN News - will have ex coaches and players providing play-by-play analysis (with telestrator)

ESPN Classic - game only, no announcers

Ray Scott was the best ever. Charlie Jones and Lindsey Nelson are up there as well. I liked Gowdy's voice, but he made a lot of mistakes. I used to like **** Enberg in the 80s, but after he coined the phrase "Oh My", he started using it too much and using it when it didn't fit. Al Michaels is a true professional. Chris Berman is a Howard Cosell and John Facenda wannabee. Plus I hear he's an horses patute to everyone he works with. /thread

Internet radio the local station. Delay it just the right amount to match the cable feed. Mute TV. It works great.

Great find. I didn't know this.

I'm going to give it a watch to see if it is really as cool as I remember it being.

Even if it's not popular, with as many networks as they have these days, there should be an option on some channel, somewhere, to have game audio only.

That Safety blew his mind.

Had no idea what he was talking about, got slapped during the commercial break and changed his tune.

Such a tuna

Another classic game by Dierdorf and the cherry on top of a stellar career both on the field where the made the HoF and then in broadcasting where I expect he will be inducted into the broadcaster's Hall of Fame one day.

We're gonna miss you buddy.

I'm sure they'd love to cater to the .00001% of fans like you.

At some point they will offer the games on some sort of pay-per-view or something where the games have announcers who don't hold back, can cuss and say whatever, don't have to worry about being politically correct, and have announcers who are just generally enjoyable to listen to.

90% of what is said during the game these days is stuff us football fans already know, and it is just nothing but redundant blather. Rather have nothing but color commentary from guys who would make the game more fun, not explain to me how you need to have a balanced rushing and passing attack.

Yeah, it was the final game of the season in 1980 between Miami and the Jets.

Have you seen how many cable channels there are? Some of them get zero ratings on many of their shows. Zero.

I'm sure audio only for the NFL would get a few points at least. Besides, it's happened before and some people liked it.

In the meantime, you can wax historically about how you miss hearing Dierdorf announce your favorite games of old, and how you're happy there were never any options to steer people from his melodic, poetic thoughts.
