Dark Souls III (1 Viewer)

Me too. I felt like I was falling behind reading everyone's posts. I will say I often feel like I get punished for going slow and building my character as I feel like I get invaded more.

I'm finding that the regular run of the mill enemies are really tough. Those basket carrying dudes are tough as hell. The Lotric Knights were giving me a lot of trouble as well.
I've been moving along slowly too.  I've just been binging.  I think I've got 15 hours played already -- I would check, but my daughter and her little buddy just kicked me off the big screen so they could watch netflix.  Stupid kids.

Toughest enemy I've encountered so far is the fat priestess ladies which you've encountered by now.  They seem to be un-staggerable once they decide that they're going to attack, and they hit hard as hell.  So far, the bosses have been pushovers compared to just getting through the level, which is actually how I prefer it.  I'm sure the bosses are going to pick up though.  It seems like in most of these games, the majority of bosses are pretty easy, and then they through and Ornstein & Smough at you.

One complaint.  I've beaten five bosses (counting the tutorial boss), and I'll I've been able to do in terms of upgrading is a Fire Broadsword +3, a Deep Scythe +2, and Pyromancy Flame +3.  That's it.  By this time in previous titles, I've had high-priority items up to +5 or +6, and it was always trivial to get anything I wanted up to +3.  But titanite in this game seems to be far less common than it used to be.  I literally haven't seen a single large titanite shard yet.  At this point, I'm starting to get nervous about upgrading anything because I don't want to waste any upgrade material.  I really, really hope it starts raining titanite pretty soon.

I've got a handle on the fat priestess ladies, it's those danm basket carrying bastards with the tree saws that have caused me to lose more then 11k souls TWICE!!!!

Those guys are just so aggressive. Dodge the first attack and they start hitting the ground.

Ive finally progressed last the undead settlement.

I know but if they hit you once and hulk smash you they hit you two more time while you're on the ground, helpless.

Lothric Knights were similar in that 8/10 times they can be handled but 2/10 times they are possessed.

The knights are generally a 2 swipe before opening up for attack, but occasionally they go for four straight strikes and just f' me up.

Also so this kinda irked me. I was helping people with the frosty dog boss. The first one at the bottom of the stairs. Well, what I soon found out is (kinda further in the game spoilers):

apparently there's another boss at the top of the stairs later on because I got pulled into that boss fight. We all died and I died instantly on purpose. I don't want to see a boss I didn't even know existed!

I never saw the boss but saw the fag gate so I know what you're talking about.

Oh, if you're having trouble getting summoned or it failing just restart the game.  Apparently there's a bug similar to dark souls to wear if the calibration takes longer than six seconds the summoning system doesn't work.

It was just odd. I had my summon sign down at the bottom of the stairs, I join in, and the guy starts running up. I really didn't catch why until I saw him going throw the fog gate. I did see the boss for a split second but didn't catch any of its attacks.

Also so my dad stayed last night passing through town. I was showing him some of the game mechanics because he still plays and has an XB1 himself.

I showed showed him the invasion mechanic. Of course I head over to the guy and his friends who were hiding jump out.  Great luck.

I did get invaded myself right after and vanquished the guy which was nice.

Similar experiences here.  I haven't used any red eye orbs yet, but I have invaded a couple of times as part of another covenant that summons you automatically.  Both times I got gang-raped by the host and his two gold phantoms.  On the plus side, I'm 2-1 against invaders, with my loss being a close one.

What am I missing about joining factions. I have coins or trinkets that I'm reading is all I need. Where do I use them and actually join?  Like I have the blue sentinels covenant piece, so how do I actually join?

edit: nevermind, figured it out. I didn't notice that slot.

Enjoying it so far, went dex again, ill definitely be a strength build on my second playthrough, just too many ultra-greatswords I wanna use.

Using the Mirrah armor set atm and it looks really good, just need to find Lucatiel's hat...

I really need to try a dex build. Those guys seem to be the best at pvp. I get wrecked with my slow ### butchers knife and greatswords in past games.

BTW- I fully intended to play all day long but my refrigerator broke yesterday and today my main waste live backed up from the laundry room floor drain. There was literally #### all over the laundry room. Luckily it's ceramic and I have ceramic wall base or I wouldve had to cut the drywall out 1 foot up and tear out the wet insulation.

$60 part for the fridge fixed it and I rented an auger from HD to snake the drain. All in all it could have been a lot worse and more expensive. $120 parts/rental sure beats a new $1k+ fridge and a $500 plumber bill on a Sunday.

Funny thing about the fridge- New fridge is about 8 years old and stopped cooling but the fridge in the garage is from 1981, never serviced once and if you leave a gallon of milk in there for a week, it's frozen solid. They don't make em like they used to.
Not related to the game at all, but this is all due the required energy efficiencies. Sucks.

Game related, I'm likely getting this but not sure I have the stomach for it. But I'll give it a go once it's dropped in price a little and I have some wikis to look at. Can you do this like I do the Bethesda games ie go through an area kill everything and once I'm done I hit the wiki to see what I missed and if I missed anything I go back in?

You can definitely go through and area and then check the wiki. You'll miss a ton of things, so it's kinda mandatory if you're more of a completionist. Here's the catch, you go to the bonfire which is the check point, the enemies all respawn.  So, you can go back, but you're fighting through stuff again (which happens a lot actually, but worth mentioning).

what system are you on?  I've got a download code for the first dark souls game on Xbox (it's a 360, but is backwards compatible). I've already got the game, so if you want to try DS, it's yours.  The first game doesn't play quite as smoothly as the new one, but it's an incredible game.

I just killed the...

Abyss Watcher(s).  So I beat them, beat the big white troll giant on the bridge, beat the witch guy, beat the tree, and beat frosty dog. Honestly the hardest battle I've had is the ice knight at the bottom of the church when you run into Sigried.  At this point I can either go to the catacombs or explore more of the graveyard area as well with the non-stop spawning skeletons.

Cathedral of the Deep - wow!

Once you get past the stupid graveyard, this has been the best part of the game so far.  I'm peaking every corner for fear that I'm about to get whacked.

The graveyard isn't that bad -- it's mostly linear and you can just run through it.  Cathedral of the Deep is a great level.  I was down to zero estus flasks and about 50% health by the time I found a shortcut back to the bonfire.  It was tough.

The graveyard isn't hard or anything, its just kind of lazy compared to 99% of the rest of the game.  I don't see any need for non-stop spawning skeletons.  Maybe I've overleveled at this point, but its just one swipe and they're gone.  I just finished the level - great design all the way through.  Always hoping the next corner is a bonfire and trying to be careful working my way through.  I saw your earlier post about Deacons of the Deep.  Yeah, really easy.  Honestly have a hard time seeing someone die to that boss - up there with Pinwheel and Moonlight Butterfly for sure.

Also, lol f'ing Patches

I just made it through the graveyard. So in excited to play after dinner since you guys say it's your favorite part so far.

-Those two dudes guarding the stairs were some of the best dueling so far. I kinda wish they had more of those.

I'm sure I've missed a boss so where on that level with the crabs.

Was Deacons of the deep that wizard dude who was essentially just like Pinwheel with the holograms of himself?

So there I was, minding my own business in Irithyll of Boreal Valley, I'm progressing smoothly, none of the mobs are particularly hard. Get past an annoying part and end up having to drop down into the lake. Read a message that says enemy below, look down and see this, I always stock up on my throwables so I take a second to line up, throw a firebomb right on top of it and it just explodes into a mess of screeching limbs.

Turns out they don't have a lot of life and aren't particularly hard to fight, but my fight or flight was in full effect when I first found them.

nah, that's Crystal Sage I think.  He's pretty easy too, but Deacons of the Deep is much easier.  If Sage is a 4/10, Deacons is 1/10.  Once you get to the castle, you'll fight 4-5 tougher battles than the boss itself.

The entire Cathedral of the Deep was a lot of fun for me...

Made it through the Catacombs, just started Irithyll of Boreal Valley. Possibly the setting in the entire series. Just incredible graphics.

Im in the wolf covenant. It's going to take awhile to get all the wolf blood grass. Everytime I summon in, I find 3-4 guys waiting for me.

I took a detour into Smoldering Lake.  You're a little ahead of me now.

Also, my earlier concerns about titanite have been eased.  I'm now swimming in regular titanite shards, and the merchant sells them now too.

I took one step down there before beating the catacombs boss and went back up - which do you think is "supposed" to come first between smoldering lake and boreal valley?

I haven't finished the catacombs yet and haven't gotten to boreal valley -- not sure where that is.  I've found smoldering lake quite a bit harder than the catacombs, but that's partly because a lot of enemies are resistant to fire, which has been my primary damage-dealer for the whole game so far (fire broadsword + pyromancy).  I created a raw handaxe which is doing better, but I really need to take it past +3, and I'm reluctant to do that since I'm saving up large titanite shards.  I think I may just loot a few more items and then go back and finish the catacombs, and come back to this area later on after I've geared up a bit.

What level are you guys? I find myself grinding as of late just to get my carry cap up. I am then thinking about grinding some more just to up my luck.

I'm level 30 and my rough stats from memory are

vig 18

edur 22

str 30

With everything else at 10.

im using a +3 butchers knife, the Mirah(so?) set and a 100% physical shield.

Move bern a lot of places but haven't beaten a lot of bosses. IIRC, just the Crystal sage, the fire Taurus daemon, the tree dude and the frost beast dude early.

getting a little overwhelmed with all the incomplete areas but I tend to find myself in front of fogged out doors with too many souls to risk losing so I head back to the shrine and level up and end up finding new areas or forgetting how I got to the boss in the first place.

Whats up with the bleeding damage? Sometimes the bar slooooowly raises up twice before for it goes away. Any triplicating make it go away faster? There was an area earlier where I would have to use 2 estus before it would stop.

I really suck at this game (but I do love it) so I tend to make sure I am constantly leveling up when I have the souls. I am even struggling with the Crystal Sage in the 2nd phase. Been trying to use throwing knives on the clones in that phase but I am not skilled enough to target, switch, and move around to avoid the magic.

If you're talking about the enemies that cover you in maggots -- you can apparently make the maggots disappear just by equipping a torch.  I helpfully read about that after I cleared that area.  You're right that they go through a ton of estus if you just let the bleed damage run its course.

Thanks Ivan.

FYI- The torch doesn't have a timer and can actually be upgraded this time around

I'm level 63.

I level up immediately once I get the required souls and if I'm like 1k away and know where a good farm area, I do that until I level up.

Vigor 28

endurance 24

vitality 14

strength 24

dexterity 22

everything else is at 10 because I'm playing a deprived character.

 ---

making progress through smoldering lake.  Also really thinking about dropping my watchdogs of farran covenant. If I went in and it s 1v1, sure. Each time I get called in it's like 4v1. It's like as soon as someone is notified they are going to be invaded they go and click on every sign they find. It sucks.

how's this stack up to prior versions? Improvements?
It's pretty great. It's really kind of a best of Dark Souls, but for me it plays much smoother. I don't know if it'll surpass the first game for nostalgia reasons, but it's pretty outstanding.  I really enjoyed the second game, but I much prefer this one. The bosses so far have more originality tied to them and aren't just there for the sake of being there. They have a purpose.

I dont see anyway you could like the others and not like this one.

Having reached Inithyll, I think this is probably the hardest game in the franchise.  I've done those curved-sword knights near the beginning over and over again and just don't seem to have enough estus to tangle with the folks at (what seems like) the end of the path.  These knights take off nearly half my health per hit with 25 vigor (or whatever the HP stat is), and they string together so many attacks in a row that it's impossible to block them all.  If this were Bloodborne, it would be no big deal because you can handle that sort of thing, but this game doesn't lend itself to dodging a bunch of rapid attacks and then mounting a counter-attack.  Also. the firestorm guys' flame attack hits extremely cheaply.

On the plus side, I'm now rolling with a fire estoc +6, and I'm very happy with this weapon.  It has better stun-lock than I expected, and the ability to keep a shield up while attacking helps a little.

I guess this is where our styles differ. I haven't had any trouble with them because I just time my first swipe with my sword, it stun locks them and swipe two takes them down.  As long as I get them 1v1, it's no problem. I farmed them a bit, it's like 3k souls in under a minute.  I actually don't mind the fire guys either - his fire is either underneath you and you dodge, your it comes straight at you. I just try to draw out his clan and take them out so I can get to him 1v1. Dodge the swipe and he gone.

Again though, probably just a play style difference. I like to run and close the gap, make one dodge roll and after that my first swipe just stuns them and I spam R1.
