David Bowens (1 Viewer)

The major issue with the Browns' ILB fantasy value is that there's no one player who takes the majority of the ILB snaps in nickel packages. The Browns use so many different looks out of their 1-5-5 and 2-4-5 packages that Gocong, Fujita and now Bowens don't see enough tackle opportunity in those packages to run up numbers, much less run them up consistently.

The most likely answer is that the situation won't change with Bowens taking Fujita's snaps, but it something to watch.

With Fujita "out for awhile" according to his head coach, can we expect Bowens to be decent fill in in the interim?
I think he can post decent numbers but don't expect the sort of stats he put up against the Jets, 8 tackles and a hit on the QB. The Browns lost CB Sheldon Brown early in the first and then lost Fujita early in the second quarter so rookie CB Joe Haden had to take over for Sheldon and that made the safeties play deeeeeeeeeeeeeep cover-two and made for easy pickings for the Jets to run the ball. The Jets completely dominated the clock after halftime and ran off 91 plays. Their RBs didn't have any long runs but the kept chipping away and converting easy third and shorts because they were given easy first and second down runs of positive yardage because their wree no safeties up in the box. Sanchez has solid weapons in, TE Dustin Keller, WR Braylon Edwards, and WR Santonio Holmes and the Browns seemd determined never to get beaten over the top and they weren't all game and forced the Jets to make long drives. The Browns weren't mixing it up by moving around pre-snap and just gave Sanchez easy reads on the defense.Bowens took over for Fujita and he had a great season last year when he took over after an injury so I think he is a safe bet to put up decent numbers but don't expect 8 tackles in less than three quarters that he had against the Jets. Up to this point he was in sub-packages as a short-zone cover LB, see the 2 INTs returned for TDs against Brees a few weeks back, but last he he rushed the QB quite effectively so look for more of a pass rush from this point forward by Bowens. Also he's a big-boy and he's a saavy vet and he can drop. The reason Fujita and Gocong beat him out as starters are due to athleticism and they are younger than Bowens, I think he's 34 or 35 but not motivated to look it up. I think Bowens is a very good play now that I think about it. He hasn't been used that much, he knows the system well. He can do everything but he's older and not overly athletic and not the speediest guy so he may not make a tons of trailing plays but he could be a good-nuff play. The only caution is if Eric Barton gets used more inside and that is a possibility.

Wow, thanks for that. I'm thinking he's going to be a sneaky play too, his schedule is pretty juicy...thanks again
