I see.  Otis - a stressed out NYC attorney with 3 little kids - gets a 24 hour reprieve with his hot wife and he spends a good chunk of his time composing snarky replies to the FFA over a ridiculous situation that - by his own admission - IS HIS FAULT, and we don't think this is at least partly fishing on his part?  C'mon guys....
Its funny to me either way.

Otis has spent his time posting in this thread regardless of whether he's serious or fishing, so the amount of time he's spent on it is irrelevant.

Each person reading this thread has their opinion of which of these they think is more likely:

  • Otis is fishing in this thread - his indignation, snark, pettiness, and photo posting all just a clever ruse to get lots of replies in an FFA thread.
  • Otis is dishing out some serious business in this thread - first looking for validation, then upset when most people don't agree with his point of view.

I’m guessing Miami, stayed there a night. Then Caymans or some such place.

No one would fly 3.5 hours then turn around and fly back home the next day.

We’ll be getting a thread about bad poolside service in a day or so.

In fairness, this actually did happen, and I do actually think the guy was dooshy for refusing it.  I’ve always accommodated such a request.  But some of the engagement in here is pretty awesome.

Most people actually do agree.  See the pole, broseph.

Well this is timely.

Wife and I just boarded our plane in Dallas for Cleveland. Had to ask the lady in row 1 to switch aisle seats with me - same scenario as above.

All went well and wife and I are enjoying our free first class upgrade.

Ok since the majority of right thinking people in here agree they would of course switch seats—and thank you all for that—I’m happy to turn it over to the real question people seem laser focused on, which is “Otis why didn’t you pick your seats when you booked a flight.”

I booked the flight on SPG points. Which are now BonVoyage points or some bull####.  In any event, somewhere along the way I went online to the terrible massacre of a site they now have as part of this transition to Marriott, and I booked the flight.  There were two open seats next to one another, cool.  Except it didn’t ever give me a chance to choose seats; it said it would send me an e-mail with the flight information.  No such e-mail ever arrived.  In the interim, life and family got in the way.  And my bust for not following up on that to figure out wtf happened.  No, I didn’t search for the salad dressing options on FlightShark.  No, I didn’t research on SeatStation.  And no, I didn’t take the basic step of logging into my airline accounts to confirm it all.  Like I said, my bad.  A couple days before we were traveling it dawned on me that I didn’t even know what airlines we were flying, and I didn’t see the flights in my apps.  So I logged in, finally found the flights, loaded them up in the AA and Delta apps, and it gave me a chance to pick seats.  The only seats available were separate.  So I picked whatever, and assumed either the kind folks at the gate would switch us, or that people couldn’t possibly be jackassery enough to refuse a reasonable seat swap.  After all, I’ve done it a million times in my life, and never even contemplated refusing.  And then I went to the airport.

TLDR: it doesn’t matter how the situation arose, numbskulls. The question was, in such a situation, would you allow a fellow traveler to swap, or not.  RTFPoll

And wait HTF did you let this happen?!?!!  YOU KNOW YOU CAN PICK YOUR SEATS ON THE SEATSELECTOR IN ADVANCE IF YOU JUST TYPE IN YOUR BROWSER WWW.SEATSHARK2002.COM/SEATSELECTOR/NOAISLES.COM?!

Wait, what?

Dude, seriously, where are you flying?

American has seat back touch screens. How are you stuck in the 90s? My last flight on American I was able to play poker against other passengers.

You go to Entertainment > Games > Poker, pick the live games option, and you can go up against everyone else on the plane playing. They're even identified by seat numbers.

Raise 15J and bluff him out of his peanuts.

WTF are you flying? Are you taking puddle jumpers from Teterboro to Springfield or something in 1997?
Between this one place called “New York City” and another called “Orlando.”  MAYBE YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT THEM

Regardless of what side of the fence you are on in regards to the expectation that one should just give up their seat---clearly the biggest doosh move in this entire scenario was photographing the dude without consent--posting it online--and trying to ruin and demolish that dudes character.  That is inexcusable, juvenile, reeks of over-excessive affluenza, and is bully behavior.  The dude had a right to keep his seat without fear that his picture would be spread across the internet.   The fact that Otis doesn't realize this is not helping him here.

Sorry Chachi, you've gotten a bit confused attempting to interpret the Pole's results.

The Pole asked this:    Are you a jerk who would refuse letting a family sit together?

Most people would switch seats for a family situation, myself included, I've done it several times - every time I've been asked in fact.

What numerous people have pointed out in this thread, but which seems to have gained little purchase with you, is the following:

  • This wasn't a "family" situation,  Most people would interpret that as meaning children are involved.  This was just 2 grown ### adults.
  • You asked him to switch to an inferior seat.  Then argued with the collective FFA that a bulkhead seat isn't any less desirable.
  • You gave no consideration to him possibly having a medical condition, or any other valid possible reason that he declined to switch.
  • You took his photo and posted it on social media.  I'm still honestly surprised you did that - not sure why you thought that was an acceptable thing to do.

In my first class, drinks are free. But I will thank her for you 👍

I just want to know why @Otis made his wife take the crappy seat while he was in comfort.
I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS CRAPPY!!111

I'm still not sure it is.  I looked--with care--at the bulkhead seats on my flight today. They're clearly bigger. And the fat guy who will inevitably recline in front of you--because HE NEEDS THAT EXTRA 8 DEGREES OF RECLINE--is out of the picture entirely.  You're also the very first ones off the plane.

I hope they start discounting these "crappy seats."  Will be the best deal in the house according to my new website, SeatShark.  Which it seems like I have to start.  Because people are apparently abusing logic in frequent flyer innernet circles.

All have been addressed.  And I'm assuming the last one is shtick.  And I REFUSE to be reverse-fished.

If this entire thing was a fishing trip--you truly do engage in d-bag behavior.  If this situation happened for real--you still exhibited d-bag behavior.   Notice there is a common denominator in both instances.   I'm not the one making a jacka** out of myself.   Laugh all you want and enjoy your day.

Ok ok fine, sorry I offended you.  FIXED

Unrelated plane story.

I was on a flight from LA to Seattle and Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell got on. Married actors for people who are going to say they don’t know who they are. She is the bigger star.

He took a seat in First and sent her to the back with the unwashed masses.

Made sure my wife took note.

For the record, those of us who fly first class often are usually upgraded for free because of how much we fly. I’d say in the past year, out of maybe 50 flights, I was upgraded for free on at least 40 of them.

So not everyone is paying the big prices for first class.

Also, once you start getting used to the comfort of first class, it is hard to fly coach. It may be snooty or whatever, but it’s the way it is.
As somebody who only flies coach outside of a few times, it's still miserable flying coach.

Another point for Delta — the woman was polite and changed our seats to put us next to each other. But on the way in, the woman from AA was overwhelmed, rancid and basically told me to GFY.
AA was my go to airline for decades. In the last 10-15, they've nosedived  into a pit of abject misery...at least for their passengers.

Just posting so I can see the star on the thread to remind me to keep following along.

Carry on you high falutin’ rich people in first class.

Fully on board team Oats with this one.  I’ve moved seats more times than I can count on cross country flights (LAX - DCA) over the years.

Though I have to question slumming it on American 1st class if this is truly a rare 24 hours away from the kids.  Took the G4 to Kauai last fall - worth every penny.

For some reason I think he has a jacked up back, but that just may be his Chips character.

Looking forward to flying into and out of LAX in October.  Mrs O is taking a flight home and I’m going to Vegas for the weekend and then heading home.  I am going to pay a lot more attention to seat assignments and the distribution of Sky Vodka.

   Glad you're liking the switch.  Don't you dare try to push me into a bulkhead seat though 😉

Here’s the offender.

[EDITED VERSION - A couple guys in here went LOLBANANAS that I posted a picture of a dooshbag in public on "social media."  So I've replaced that picture with this one.  Our villain is like this guy but a lot older and dooshier, and unlike the guy in this photo, he's the kind of guy who refuses reasonable requests from strangers; also note our villain is wearing a dooshy white watch. If you're desperate to see the picture of this guy, please shoot me a PM and I'll send to you, so you can avoid him in the future.  But, to respect the sensitivity of a couple of FFAers, who went bananas over this picture being posted on the massive social media machine that is the FFA, I've taken down the picture.  Hugs and Kisses, Oats]

I believe he’s googling “more white watches on sale”

and also maybe “how to be a powerdoosh”
:lmao:

I love how it's "due to a couple of ####### guys in the FFA"

instead of

Hey guys, I apologize, I realize now I shouldn't have taken a clandestine pic of a guy and put it on public display on Imgur for ridicule.

Especially since literally the only thing he did to upset me was decline to switch seats with my wife on a plane.

lmao at "clandestine."  I took a picture in a public place.  And I posted it on IMGUR just so I could share it here, because our site stinks.  Oh, and I didn't realize these 15 year old kids trolled imgur all day.  I thought it was just a place people post pics.  Oh and lastly, the post didn't say anything negative about the guy.  It was just a picture of a random guy posted on the internet.

I'm starting to think two or three of you guys know this guy.  Hell, maybe you are this guy.

So for the guys making this about the ruin of a random stranger's internet reputation, and the guys making this about the merits of the bulkhead, how many of you, seriously, are just a little embarrassed that you've refused one of these requests before, and so you're trying desperately to defend the fort at all costs?

Asking for a friend who is a decent human being.

Imgur has a option to make photos public or private - surely someone as tech savvy as you are knew that?

Did the guy know you were taking a pic of him to post online?... No?... you probably just forgot to mention that to him then.

Hold on, are you being obtuse?... or just sneaky?... I didn't say the photo said crap about the guy, I said you posted it on Imgur for ridicule, which you did.  E.g.:

"Our villain is like this guy but a lot older and dooshier, and unlike the guy in this photo, he's the kind of guy who refuses reasonable requests from strangers; also note our villain is wearing a dooshy white watch."

I think it's partly true, mostly him just ####### with us.

MOP did this all the time.  Fabricate and embellish something that happened, pit himself against somebody else, proclaim himself the person in the right then argue and rile posters up who disagreed with him.  He was guaranteed multiple pages by replying to those he irritated the most and he loved it.  Loved the attention.

Otis is doing the same thing right now in this thread.

Not fishing.  Deadly serious here.  If you refuse a reasonable request to switch seats to let a husband and wife fly together, you are a sociopath.  END THREAD
