As has been discussed in other threads, there is no guarantee the franchise tag will be a viable option this year (under a locket scenario it may very well be challenged and beaten in court), let alone future years. I don't think it's a lock he leaves, but I don't think the franchise tag is a likely option at all.
You're right, no guarantee at all. If there was a guarantee that the tag would still be in play, I'd say there was a greater than 50% chance that DeAngelo was still a Panther next season. I was just saying that I think an 80% chance that he's gone is overestimating it.
I agree on the 80% thing. I'm just saying that a lot folks seem convinced that the franchise tag is a big part of the likelihood he will stay, and I personally think the odds of the tag actually being placed on him are very slim (lockout combined with this particular player in this particular situation).Assuming the tag passed all of the legal hurdles (and the costs associated with that), Williams would be the absolute poster child for why the tag can suck for players during CBA negotiations, and I don't think the Panthers in general want that fight with a guy who has been as honorable as Williams has during his stint there.I could certainly see the team and Williams just coming to an agreement on a contract though, so again, I agree about the 80%.
