Death of the Diner? (1 Viewer)

I eat at a diner

Yeah, the diner culture is one of those things that only people in Jersey really get.  I could phrase that differently, but I will refrain.
I wouldn't quite say that. Long Island and Westchester share it just as much. NY suburban diners are a fairly consistent shared experience for the 15 or so million people living around and near the City (although the movie Diner was set in Baltimore).

Manalapan Diner is still around. I think the one further south on 9 in Freehold that was once the Capitol Diner is still around too, but it hasn't gone by that name in decades.
The old La Mirage not far from the mall? That was where my family and I would go as a kid pretty much once a week. There was also Golden Bell further south on 9 around Howell.

Park Place off 34 in Aberdeen was criminally underrated.

My non-breakfast go to is a tuna melt.

I also agree it's rising rent that's driving the decline in NYC diners. Seems like the ones that can stick around are those which charge very non-diner prices. I had a Moonstruck around the corner from me in midtown and it was good, not great, but you were spending like $13-15 for an omelette with hash browns/toast.

Yes, that's it! La Mirage, I never would have remembered that but now that you said it, I can picture the sign. I still think of it as the Capitol Diner, or actually the Capitol ner since the "Di" was always burnt out. Golden Bell was also a frequent visit for me, Park Place a little less so as it was further out of the way.

If I had a nickel for every 2 AM bacon cheeseburger deluxe with gravy fries I ate at Manalapan Diner... I'd have a few bucks. I wonder if the old waitress with the giant beehive hairdo right out of central casting is still alive.
