Pacman: 'I told nothing but the truth'

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

Wearing a suit and tie, Titans cornerback Pacman Jones calmly answered questions from his childhood idol today in an interview with NFL Network.

Jones was speaking publicly for the first time since his meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell on Tuesday.

Interviewed by former NFL defensive back Deion Sanders, Jones said he was “nervous” when answering questions from Goodell.

"It went pretty good. I just had to explain myself,’’ Jones said. “I have a great deal of respect ...’’

Sanders asked Jones the first thing he was asked by Goodell.

“Explain,’’ Jones said. “I just explained myself. I told nothing but the truth. He asked me, 'How can we help you? What can I do to change my image?' It was a long meeting. ...’’

Jones has drawn the attention of Goodell and the league for his 10 off-field incidents since the Titans drafted him in 2005.

Within 10 days, Jones is expected to be suspended by the league.

Jones has declined interview requests from The Tennessean and other local media outlets since his alleged involvement in a triple shooting at a Las Vegas strip club on Feb. 19.

He quit talking to local reporters back in October. But he agreed to answer questions for Sanders, who starred for the Falcons as Jones was growing up in Atlanta. The interview was filmed in Atlanta, where Jones has a home.

Attorneys Manny Arora and Worrick Robinson, who represent Jones, could not be reached for comment about the interview.

Jones admitted to making some poor decisions, and said he’s bothered how people view him.

“Just how people perceive me,’’ Jones responded when asked what angers him. “If you would just take five minutes to sit down and talk to me, you would see that I am real intelligent. I am smart. … "

Sanders asked Jones why he hasn’t been able to avoid trouble.

“People I was hanging around,’’ Jones said. “I have made some bad decisions. I live and I learn. But I can promise you that I am on the right track. I have made horrible decisions as far as picking who I am with or where I am going places with. …"

A brief portion of the interview was shown today on NFL Network, and the entire interview is expected to be shown on Thursday.

I hope Deion doesn't give him the whole "young brother" thing and seriously focuses on Pacman problems and how he can surround himself with positive people that are role models and not thugs. He is a waste of talent at the rate he is going.

The league hates the "bad boys" yet they put them in the spot light. There is no such thing as bad press, and they are really giving this guy way more attention than he deserves. When do all of the people with good behavior get to have a long meeting with the commish. Goddell has already proven to me that he is a big P****! :lmao:

Great. I'd hate to get smacked over the head in a club by a dumb guy.

Deion sure does have an eye for talent. :lmao: Noel Devine, and now Pac Man. I wonder how many scrub players he has helped out, and mentored. That being said, he is still the best athlete to come out of FSU so i love him. :lmao:

"Whatever the punishment is, I'm gonna man up and accept it."

Well, that's a relief. I am sure there'll be no appeal then, will there, Pac-Man?

Will Deion be tackling the hard issues in this interview? Ah, nevermind, he doesn't tackle anything!

Excerpt from Jones-Sanders interview

Excerpts from Deion Sanders' interview with Pacman Jones on NFL Network. The entire interview will air in two parts, tonight and Friday on NFL Total Access at 6 p.m.

Sanders: Tell us about your meeting with the Commissioner.

Jones: "It went pretty good. I just had to explain myself. Really that was it, I was pretty nervous."

Sanders: Pacman Jones is nervous?

Jones: "I get nervous a lot."

Sanders: What makes you nervous?

Jones: "A lot of things."

Sanders: Uncertainty?

Jones: "Uncertainty, yes. Definitely."

Sanders: Are you nervous when you really don't have control of the situation?

Jones: "That is not the only time. I get nervous every Sunday right before the ball is kicked off."

Sanders: Did you get nervous walking into the room with the Commissioner?

Jones: "Yeah."

Sanders: What was the first thing that was said?

Jones: " 'Explain.' "

Sanders: What did you say?

Jones: "I just explained myself. I told him nothing but the truth. He asked me 'How can we help you? What can I do to change my image' ... I told him how I moved from where I used to stay at, I changed my surroundings."

Sanders: What do you fear?

Jones: "I fear like my dream has been taken away."

Sanders: Do you think you have been blessed with all of this ability just to play football?

Jones: "No."

Sanders: There is a bigger picture than that. What is that picture?

Jones: "I was blessed to play ball, but I was blessed to take care of my family."

Sanders: Why do you think trouble follows you?

Jones: "Like I said man, it was the people I was hanging around. I made some bad decisions. I am not living a lie. I promise you that I am on the right track, but I have made horrible decisions about who I am with or who I am going places with. ... Two of my friends who had never driven a Bentley, I let them drive my Bentley one night just because. Not just to show them the upside, but I never had anyone do that for me. It is the little things. It is always the little things that get me in trouble."

Sanders: How do you go to your 'homies' and say 'Look here man, we can't roll like this any more.' What was that conversation like?

Jones: "I have always been the leader, no matter, from when I was 7 or 8 years old. I have always been the leader. In whatever I have done. All of them pretty much respect me as a person to listen to where I have come from. Like I tell them, do you want to keep seeing me in the news? Do you want to see me back in the projects? I have a story to tell. Most of them, they know I haven't been fed from a silver spoon. I used to stay right down the street from where my projects were. They tore my projects down and built these great big old houses. About 10 or 15 miles up the street there are still projects. I had to learn that there is a way bigger picture than this. And playing in the NFL is a privilege, it isn't a right."

Sanders: We have a saying in the inner city; I am just keeping it real. What does real look like to you?

Jones: "That keeping it real, that shouldn't even be a saying. Keeping it real is keeping out of trouble and staying on the field. Making sure your family is safe, that is keeping it real. … They might need someone some day. I am keeping it real, I can help you out, but if I can't help you out because I am trying to keep it real with you on a personal level, how can I be keeping it real with myself? As far as keeping it real, first off I am going to keep it real with me and my family, that's what I have to live for. I have a little girl, I don't want my little girl to have to go back to the projects and go through what I went through."

Sanders: What does football mean to you?

Jones: "The world."

Sanders: So when you were suspended last year did it bother you?

Jones: "Oh yeah. A lot."

Sanders: You've been described as the 'poster boy' for the NFL misconduct. How does that make you feel?

Jones: "I really don't like it. I am definitely not the poster boy. What is a poster boy? Is it allegations? Is it when you are proven guilty? Is it when you've got dreads and you make a couple of mistakes? What is a poster boy?"

Sanders: You are the Commissioner. Commissioner Pacman. And I came into your office with all the same allegations, all the same incidents. The dreadlocks, the jewelry, everything. The whole bravado. What should be my punishment? Or should I be punished?

Jones: "I don't want to answer that question. I don't think it would be fair to myself to answer that question.''

Sanders: But you think something is going to happen?

Jones: "Oh yeah. I know there is going to be a punishment and whatever the punishment is I am going to be a man and I am going to take responsibilities and own up to whatever the punishment is. Hopefully it won't be that long of a punishment, or nothing that could jeopardize my career.''

Sanders: What do your teammates say to you about all these incidents?

Jones: "I get numerous calls, but probably Keith Bulluck is the one that calls me the most. Vince (Young) has called me a couple of times. One thing I can say about it is they really do stick with me. For the most part they want to see me on the field. Keith is like a mentor to me. He is always like, 'No, Pac. No this and no that.' Even if I think about doing something, Keith is with me 90 percent of the time in Nashville and I am up under his wing. He is really looking out for me like a big brother. … I pretty much listen to Keith. I've got a good deal of respect for him, man. I know he is pretty much wanting the best for me. When I have been down and had nobody to talk to, Keith was there for me. Keith is one of the ones I can really listen to.''

Sanders: What has Coach Fisher told you about these incidents?

Jones: "Coach Fisher is fed up with it. His hands are down. As much as he loves me, he is like, 'Pac, you are at the road, you are either going to choose the right way or the wrong way. Let's get it together.' ''

Funny, if what Pac Man said was true, I think Goddell handled it perfectly.

This is the funniest comment I've read in weeks.

No such thing as bad press? That's 100% wrong.I guess you weren't around in the late 70s when the NBA was perceived by the public to be a league of drug-using thugs and interest in the league cratered. The nba finals were shown on tape-delay at 11pm in those days. The NFL is being proactive to prevent that sort of thing from happening to their league.

Supposedly this is very good.
Supposedly so is chewing on glass. No really.Yep, one of the NFL's all-time goofball clowns (all he's ever been missing was a cone-shaped hat and polka dot jammies) talking to one of its biggest POSs, can't wait. I'll get right to it, right after the test pattern mini-series is over. I'm just offended that Owens wasn't included somehow. How dare there be a spotlight w/o him in it??

I didn't like the pick back then, and I thought he was atrocious as a rookie. That said, there is not another CB in the league I would rather have on my team now then Adam Jones. Dude is a baller and I sincerely hope he can get it together. In the interview with Deion, he has said all the right things and got a little deeper then a lot of the morons who get on the wrong side of the line.

Hopefully this turns out well. Jones and Nick Harper will not be fun to toss against.

That was before the Internet. Besides, I don't see how the public's perception of the NBA has changed much. Ask yourself this, do you think if T.O. was just as good as he is now, and acted like Marvin Harrison, would he be nearly as marketable?

Hope they play more Zone. Harper has some trouble in man-to-man

They need an NFL caliber safety to play zone.

:hey: Says the man who took 80K cash to a strip club.

Pacman still doesn't get it, he is not the victim here, he is the bad guy.I watched the interview and he didn't seem sincere at all, at least in my opinion. I've heard him say quite a few times in the past stuff like "I am hanging out with the wrong people and that will change" but yet he had many incidents after he said that. Also when you're involved in 10 police transactions within 2 years, it might not be that you're hanging with the wrong people, it might end up being that you are the wrong person. After watching Pacman speak to Deion, I will take the under on 3 months until his next transgression.

So the people he was hanging out with made him put the beat down on a stripper for having the audacity to break his "rain rules"? He threatens to kill a guy and 2 minutes later one of his posse does it and he thinks it is not his fault?

Hey Commish - show some sac and ban this turd!

The guy is as ignorant as my ###!

I had to have a translator decipher half the BS that was spewing from his mouth.

What the hell is jer-ee? (Later found out it is J-E-W-E-L-R-Y)

What the hell is dridge? (Later found out it is D-R-E-A-D-S)

There were other words or ebonics he was mumbling but I couldn't make it out to even take an educated guess.

Another thing that irked me about his BS "feel sorry for me" speach was that he's calling out his fans saying that they immediately stereotyped him because of his "dridge" and his "jer-ee"

because they associate those things with thugs. Gimme a break! Al Harris has "dridge" and I don't think anyone considers him a thug. Ricky Williams has "dridge" and he's not a thug. When Ricky gets into trouble he's only hurting himself...he doesn't leave a trail of bullet riddled bodies in his wake! He should be suspended for atleast a year, if not indefinitely (ala Onterrio Smith).

I love the fact that Rod Woodson (a BLACK man) called Pac-Man out and said his excuse was a cop out.

Good for Rod to not be afraid of being called an "Uncle Tom" and calling it like it is.

Rod...this is for you  :lmao:

What a HANDJOB.

I hope he gets suspended for the year. PACMAN says that he is always the Leader since he was 6-7 years old but all of his problems are because of who he is hanging around with? Give me a break. HE IS THE LEADER. HE HAS THE CASH. He dictates where they go.

Suspend this bum for the year.

Isn't 50/50 considered black too? That's the impression I've always got. They don't claim to be white...seems they are more on the black side of the fence.
