Demarco Murray (1 Viewer)

I think that the big payday for Murray will be after the game against the Eagles, if he can put up big numbers again. Right now, he's a one week flash in the pan, but if he does it for a second week in a row, he becomes the hot commodity. I am historically bad about making the decision to sell high when I should, but I am going to try my best to do so if he goes off again this week. I think that a Murray/Felix package could have tremendous trade value.
If you can get a #2 RB or #2 WR in exchange for Murray and you also own Felix I think you have to jump on it. I own both and would love to move Murray and either stash or dump Felix. When Felix comes back it will be a PITA trying to figure out which one to start on a weekly basis. I would start Murray over Felix but they really hurt each other in terms of value.

Why did DeMarco Murrey get the first opportunity over Phillip Tanner?
Ignore all the Philip Tanner talk on these forums. He can play special teams and made the roster pretty much with 1 helmet-less run that wowed the owner. He probably wouldn't even be on the team if Sam Hurd was still there to play special teams. Hate to break down his whole outlook so negatively, but the Philip Tanner talk is out of control. Murray is more talented than Felix. Felix has no balance, on that 91 yard run that Murray had, if that were Felix... he would have stumbled on his own legs after juking the safety, then got up pounding the turf as if to say "almost had it." I've seen that way too much from Felix lately. It's hard to find a reason to give a healthy Felix the start over Murray, let alone Tanner.
This is comical - are you missing the part where Murray went down untouched?
He's a rookie who missed all OTAs in a lockout year, missed all of training camp due to injury, and had 20+ carries for 200+ yards on his legs when he went down at that moment in the 4th quarter. Maybe to you that's comical, but I see a player who's smart enough to protect the football because he knows he's gassed.
You guys are pretty sensitive. The guy I was responding to criticized Felix stating the difference between him and Murray is that Felix would give up on a play - even thought Murray did the exact same thing.I am not criticizing Murray - althought I don;t know if I have ever seen that before - I am criticizing the comment.

All 25 carries. Die hard here. I have never seen Felix run like that. I dont mean how big the holes were. I mean the toughness to finish runs out. Back when Dallas took Murray in the draft I loved what I saw in highlights of Murray. Murray runs hard and does NOT avoid tackles. Murray look to go right up the gut. Felix lost his burst over the years. Has Always tried to bounce stuff outside to avoid contact.

Dallas finally found there answer at RB. Took a while but murray may be worth the wait.

Jaws made his best point ever on Monday Night Football earlier this year about Felix Jones. "He runs to be tackled." That is the description I've been looking for the past 3 seasons. Murray is like a bowling ball compared to Jones.

that run at about 6:30 in the video is beautiful. It's more than I think we saw at OU and it's got qualities to it that only the great ones can do.

In the fourth of a game where he's toted the rock so much and ...sniff...it was beautiful.

I'd be curious what Waldman, Jene and the tape watchers think of that one. I'd bet it gets better with a quality film and....oh I loved it.

I never said he'd give up. I said he had no balance and would have stumbled on his own feet. Sure everyone stumbles, so did Murray a bunch of times. But Felix comes out of the tunnel stumbling. That "Runs to be tackled" line was absolutely a perfect description of Felix.

Yeah he dropped his pads and helmet and layed that rams guy out and busted out for 43y. Looks great. Excited.

What happened to him at the end of that run? It looks like he just falls on the ball to avoid being tackled. Was he gased? Did he get tripped up? (it's hard to tell on the video).

He already ran the equivalent of 2 1/2 football fields in that game. He was tired.

No disrespect but that's a bogus statement. I could maybe see him slowind down cause he's gassed but I don't know about taking a dive. I wonder about his conditioning.

same old crap from people... they did not grab the guy when everyone said to on waivers and now they are trying to make themselves feel better about it... the dude had a freaking awesome game and if i had to guess as to why he fell down it probably has something to do with the fact that the Cowboys were winning 27-7 and he did not need to risk getting tripped up in an awkward way between two defenders or losing a fumble, and chose to fall down on his own accord... in my opinion it was a very mature move for a rookie RB to make...

or maybe like the other guy said he is out of shape and couldn't handle running for 250+ yards lmfao

Just draw the line in the sand right now man haha. Are you a Felix owner? Razorback fan? Cowboys fan? I'm a Cowboys fan and most of us who are have been frustrated with the "temporary fixes" at RB ever since Emmitt left. I still can't believe Parcells passed over Steven Jackson and for a while we thought that was a good move b/c Julius Jones had an amazing 6 or 7 games, but that dream fizzled out pretty quick.

Then we had something good in Barber. The knowledgeable fans wanted to leave him as a closer and limit his carries, but Philips pretty much accelerated Barber's career by force feeding him the ball and he eventually became ineffective as well.

Then came the surprise (kind of) draft pick of Felix Jones over Mendenhall. The Cowboys strongly considered Mendenhall but decided they wanted a COMPLIMENT to Barber, kind of like a more dynamic Julius Jones b/c they knew that Barber worked better in a timeshare. So they passed on the feature back and drafted the COMPLIMENT.

Felix showed enough flashes his first couple of years that led some people to believe he could actually handle the load, but injuries were always a problem. He seemed to squash those worries with some great performances at the end of 2009 and was headed into 2010 with a golden opportunity. But what happened in 2010? I honestly don't remember a single carry Felix had since those two back to back Eagles games in 2009. He had his chance and apparently his 2010 was so forgettable that Garrett made a bold move and took Murray in the 3rd.

I don't think you realize how impressive what Murray did was considering how far behind he was b/c of the lockout and his training camp injury. Murray is a rare breed and is only going to get better once his conditioning and understanding of the game improve over time.

I never thought I'd be starting Murray over CJ2 (esp facing the Colts run def) but I am. Murray had gaping holes at times, but just about any big game by an RB- ur going to see some holes. At the same time, Murray made great cuts, lowered and blasted through tackles, and had the vision to find the cutback lanes and holes. Looked like the real deal to me.

I'm in PPR so it would be nice to see him flash the hands that caught 70+ balls in college, but beggers can't be choosers.

Holy cow, you gotta like this...I just invested in Murray in my main league, traded away CJ & Ingram. Murray is my No. 2 now and I mean that, gotta take risks.

I don't have Felix but I can get him. Here's my question:

I think the Cowboys with Murray + Tanner and Jones when healthy as 3rd down / receiving back would make total sense, would be really effective and basically could be what it sounds like you are saying they (or their fans) have been looking for for years. BUT: will Jones and Garrett go ahead and do the actual right thing or do they just go back and give Jones a carries share?

Not sure Murray would've broken out sooner, but I believe if he had been healthy during training camp, Murray would've had a lot more touches. I love this kid. Also, on a different but related subject, I think RBBC & all this sharing crap is simply a fad. It amazes me that teams are inthralled with something that doesn't help them, & in fact, hurts production on most teams, IMO. I have no doubt most every team will go back to a feature back system by 2015, if not sooner. Not saying this because it hurts FF production, but I've always believed you're just shooting yourself in the foot when you give an inferior RB touches (in most instances). Not just because of the simple fact that a lesser player is getting touches, but a timeshare takes away from the top RB because many times he never gets in a groove. There's definitely such a thing as getting a feel for cutback lanes & such. I don't mind a change of pace back or a 3rd down back so much, but when you don't give your best RB at least 70% of the touches, it hurts your offense in the long run.

Wow that's a big trade, I hope that was a redraft league and not a dynasty league. Ingram is all but worthless in redrafts, but CJ I'm still holding out hope for.I mean don't get me wrong I'm very high on Murray's ability, but he's in a very bad fantasy situation. The only thing he has going for him is that Felix is so injury prone. So whenever he has a 4-6 week injury, expect them to lean towards the 6 instead of the 4. That's just their way of giving Murray more touches without disrespecting Felix.

Felix will definitely get his touches, I wasn't implying that he won't. But the problem is Garrett's playcalling is so inconsistent. You never know if he'll run the ball 15 times a game or 35 times a game. It'd be nice if he let Murray take the reigns in the games where they don't run much, and then maybe split a bit more evenly if it's a run heavy game. But I don't see that happening. Felix and Choice are vets, they'll be a thorn in Murray's side until they get rid of them. Then Murray will finally be the guy that have to "respect and feed."

I'm on board the Murray train (drafted him in 2 leagues this year), but taking a guy in the 3rd round of the NFL draft isn't what I'd call a bold move.
Well to me, the top 3 rounds of the NFL Draft usually consist of contributors. You don't take a RB in the 3rd round unless you're not happy with your RBs. But I get what you're saying. Boldish haha

I think it's going the other way. For one, these guys just can't take the pounding over the course of a season anymore - the collisions are becoming more and more brutal as everybody continues to get bigger and faster. Also with the rules favoring the passing game it makes sense to specialize your RBs more - it's tough to find one guy who's above average (or better) at everything. Also, it's cheaper to keep any one guy from amassing huge numbers and then needing to pay him a commensurate salary, it seems wiser to spend your money elsewhere on the roster. It seems like the teams at the top are basically treating their RBs like disposable razors and having success.

I'm sure my opinion is in the vast minority, but I'm convinced teams will start pulling away from RBBC. Teams are passing more than ever which will never change (unless NFL rules change, which I highly doubt) & there's no reason a RB can't handle the load in today's passing offenses. You might have a point about salaries, but that's not going to stop teams from doing what's best. It'll likely be a somewhat slow switch, but I believe it's going to happen. Plus, it's not like the good RBs aren't getting paid now. RBs, in general, tend to get the shaft because they're typically one of the easier positions to replace, which is all the more reason to go back to a feature back system.

I think they should move from committees to rotations. Not saying a RB should sit out an entire game, but maybe the workload split is 70/30, and the RBs take turns with who gets the 70. Obviously game plans might dictate one RB get ridden 2 or 3 weeks in a row, but coaches should then make a concentrated effort to get the other RB involved.

50% Split = 15 carries a game X 16 Games = 240 Carries

70% Split 20 Carries a game X 8 Games = 160 Carries

30% Split 10 Carries a game X 8 Games = 80 Carries

Both backs would get 240 carries per season in this extreme example, but teams would get workhorse production while having the committee benefit of preserving their RBs.

I never said he'd give up. I said he had no balance and would have stumbled on his own feet. Sure everyone stumbles, so did Murray a bunch of times. But Felix comes out of the tunnel stumbling. That "Runs to be tackled" line was absolutely a perfect description of Felix.
Cowboys waived RB Tashard Choice.uh... BUMP

the dude had a freaking awesome game and if i had to guess as to why he fell down it probably has something to do with the fact that the Cowboys were winning 27-7 and he did not need to risk getting tripped up in an awkward way between two defenders or losing a fumble, and chose to fall down on his own accord... in my opinion it was a very mature move for a rookie RB to make...

or maybe like the other guy said he is out of shape and couldn't handle running for 250+ yards lmfao
Some mass hysteria in here. I am not stating that he's not a decent RB - and he may even prove to be good. My comments are more about the goofy comments than the player.but a very mature move for a rookie RB?

So mature that only the veterans make moves like that - like LT, Emmitt, Sanders etc.

Felix will definitely get his touches, I wasn't implying that he won't. But the problem is Garrett's playcalling is so inconsistent. You never know if he'll run the ball 15 times a game or 35 times a game.
262226272434Those are the number of rushing attempts the Cowboys have had in their first 6 games this year.Murray will get ~15-18 touches a game from here on out unless he shows the St. Louis games was a fluke and really regresses. Felix has had 3+ years to prove he can be the effective back the Cowboys need, but hasn't be able to break through. Murray did it in his first shot. He'll get the opportunity until he proves he doesn't deserve it. He wasn't drafted to be a 3rd down back or situational player. He was brought in to replace Felix if he faltered this year.

Garrett made a bold move and took Murray in the 3rd.
I'm on board the Murray train (drafted him in 2 leagues this year), but taking a guy in the 3rd round of the NFL draft isn't what I'd call a bold move.
It is when you realize several things.1. The Boys wanted a running back so bad that as Ingram began to fall, they were trying to move up in the second round to draft him. The Saints found out and the rest is history.2. After #1 fell through the Boys set their eyes on Williams in the second and thought for sure he'd be there but no one expected the Cards to grab him.3. After #2 had taken place the Boys thought a healthy Murray in the 3rd would provide better value and fit their scheme better and was extremely happy when they picked him. Everyone thought they were crazy for drafting Murray most even thouoght there were other needs to be addressed. The Boys knew what they were doing, the rest of the world did not.Tex

lol at knew wat they were doing. sounds like they were desperate for a rb, any rb, just grab the highest ranked rb. looks like the luckboxed into the best of the bunch. imagine if they wasted some draft picks to grab cedric benson the 2nd.

If you were last in the league in rushing or even near the bottom you'd be desperate too.If you thought the one back in the draft who is compared to one of the greatest in the nfl and the best to ever where the star, you'd try to move up to get him too.If you think your #2 back on your board has value in the second round has been taken then your 2b back is still there in the third round, I.d say they knew what they were doing. Not desparate for any back just one of their Big 3 and it looks like it may pay off.

???
There was a run (long run, I think the 43 yarder?) Where he was beat and just simply went down rather taking more hits. I thought he could have gone for a few more but I think he was gassed. Unless I missed something else...
I've seen this alluded to several times & I might be able to help (I was at the game). Murray did go down on his own, but I believe he might've had a cramp which could've scared him into immediately collapsing thinking it was his hammy again. He went to the sidelines & they never looked at his hammy, which made me think it was a cramp. You could tell he wasn't stretching it out the last few steps or he would've been gone. Imagine adding the rest of that yardage to his totals. :)

That seems like the opposite of making a bold move to me. Making a bold move would have been trading up to make sure they got him or one of the 2 guys they liked better than him - not settling for your third option in the 3rd round. If Murray turns out to be the goods, I'd call it a shrewd move, but not a bold one.

can't start him this week over Gore and SJax in PPR.. did start him last week , but I don't think he takes Phily by surprise and he doesn't catch balls out of the backfield. If I could start 3 RBs, I don't think I could give him the nod over Bradshaw this week either. But I wouldn't feel bad at all starting him as my 4th RB.

NYJ ~ Game 1 ~ ranked 15th in ypc through 6 weeks at 4.2

STL ~ Game 6 ~ ranked 16th in ypc through 6 weeks at 5.5
* Attempts : 25

* Average : 10.12

What do I see when I look at these numbers ?
I see the Rams doing a league worst at all three of

* Yards given up per game : 183
* Yards given up per run on average : 5.5
* Total yards given up on the season : 1103
* Longest run given up on the season : 91

If Murray has any talent than he should have posted good numbers. But look at every other team he's faced this year? I understand that it may have taken him a couple games to get used to NFL speed; I understand that this is a small sample size; I understand that in many of the games he didn't get many carries to get going. But across the board, whether it was a strong defense (SFO) or a softer run defense like the Lions, Murray didn't wow anyone. Someone who goes out and in his first real start breaks the record for rushing yards for the cowboys, set by Emmitt Smith, while every other matchup has posted nothing more than an average of 3.5, tells me there while be a regression toward the mean.

I'm not yet excited about Murray but that may be because I don't like the cowboys.
I'm not yet excited about Murray because he is the reason why I lost last week in Fantasy.

Take these numbers and explanations with a grain of salt do to the above bias'. Pick him up if you have space on your fantasy roster. I would even get excited about him if I were a cowboy's fan. However, being those 3 I would not go as far as to mortgage the house or get hype on a message board.

However, I do like to :stirspot: . If you watched the game last week, don't give me the bull on how hard he ran etc. Explain to me why he didn't gather more than just 3.5 yac in any other game. Does he only run hard against soft defenses? Don't tell me the guy was a BEAST at OU. There have been ton of beast players at every position that come into the NFL. The college game is completely different and no one should have to argue that point.

outstanding post.

I am expecting another good game from him tonight. Most likely around 100 total yards and a great chance at a score or two.

Eagles defense is bad and a bye week won't solve their issues...

I'm starting him again tonight, but I'm not getting my expectations up too high. Philly gets jacked up to play Dallas anyway, so there are too many signs pointing to him putting up rather mediocre numbers.

1. Philly loves nothing more than to beat Dallas more than any other team in the league.

2. Playing at Philly is not good.

3. Playing on Sunday night with the entire football audience watching.

4. Both teams needing the win, but I think Philly will have more of a must win mentality.

5. Philly wants to greatly improve their run defense.

6. Too much talk about his record breaking game last week.

Like I said, I'm still starting him, but I'm thinking around 75 yards with maybe a TD in there. Hope I'm wrong...

Good post redBourne - but you completely forgot that Murray is "special" and "mature" - don't bother with logic in this thread.

Logic? I guess...but using games where he got 2 or 3 or 4 carries as proof of anything is pretty short sighted.Yes, the Rams sucks...but he was phenomenal in that game (despite the stumble you went on about). He is a rookie...it takes time for rookies. The kid showed talent in college and will be given a chance at least this one more week. When its over, if he does well, I expect the same excuses. Its just philly's D, who couldn't have run against them...and so on.

I don't have a horse in the race. I am not doubting Murray - I did state that he looked slow and I only brought about the stumble when somebody else stated Felix would have fell down on his own.

I don't even care how he does tonight. My posts are more against the hype. There's a handful of threads year to year proclaiming somebody to be the next best thing - and more often than not, the player turns to being mediocre. But referring to him as special or mature at this point are a little bit much. He may prove to be special - but I doubt it will be due to the Rams game. It will be because he has a great game against a solid D.

Good luck to you guys that own him.

I believe there is a post in this very thread that a 'Boys fan pointed out vs. the Patriots he was at 8-35, or something like that, then was given a couple carries late while the Cowboys still had the lead in an effort to milk more clock. Pats new what was coming and he got stuffed both times winding up at 10 for 32. It may have been a different thread, but I recall reading it on here someplace. No dog in this fight, as I don't care who thinks he/isn't all that. Just using that Pats game as an example to point out, you can't just look at a row of numbers and determine anything(good or bad. It's why you can't anoint him Barry f-ing Sanders after last week either). Game situation dictates a ton. Amount of opportunity dictates a ton. What'd he have coming into last weeks' game, 20 total career carries? 25? Plus a handful of catches? Can't remotely make an informed judgement off of that small of a sample size.

Some FFers are really bad about rating a guy on one game (good or bad). Murray can have poor production against Philly tonight & I'll be just as high on him as I was, & I like him a LOT (as long as he's still passing the eyeball test). Conversely, if he does really well, I won't rate him any higher than I have him now unless he deserves it via eyeballs.

Production isn't the name of the game when trying to figure out a young prospect. I believe that's a huge mistake many people make.

Eyeballs, eyeballs, eyeballs. ;)

Your logic suggests that 6 attempts for 21 yards and a 3.5 average will translate to 18 attempts for 63 yards and a 3.5 average.

Murray's YPC average in 4 or 5 carry games doesn't mean anything.
