Democratic Debate (2 Viewers)

Michael Smerconish- Bernie won't play in the national election.

Sorry Bernie fans: he's right.
He would turn the purple states all red. I had that debate with a very left leaning friend of mine who follows politics as well. For the Republicans to win, they must sweep VA/FL/OH. I'm not sure which of those states Bernie could win. I also think he would really struggle in a place like PA.

Bernie: 9.5

Martin O Malley 7

Hillary: 10
Gold Bond purchases per month?
Saints remember when you used to rip Hillary for not giving interviews? You implied she was trying to hide.
Uhm yes. I think she flubbed the big kid's dishonesty question, the email question, and the intervention question, at least. Not warm, overswung in acting strong, and looked like her jaw was falling off her face at the Sanders ad.

So that's about a 6 or maybe a C to B-.

Thoughts on Sanders?
I thought Sanders was great. But Bernie's popularity will not, IMO, extend to the general election should he win the nomination. That's been my biggest concern with him all along. Simply put, I think if he wins, the Dems lose.

Not only this.

I think there are some blue states that would turn purple if Bernie is the candidate. I'm frankly unsure he can hold the usual Democratic coalition.

I tend to agree with you if the Republicans were running a moderate likable candidate but they are instead embracing the ### clown Trump so i think Bernie would have a pretty darn good shot.

The Trump vs. Hillary debates are going to be must see TV.
I'm going to say it right here right now. No way Hillary wins the nomination.
And if you are wrong, you can always start another alias account.

You appeared out of nowhere and have gone on a posting frenzy in this forum, which you usually only see from someone who was previously banned. You are approaching 250 posts in less than 10 days. People who are new here usually just don't do that, it looks really suspicious.

Yes. As I wrote in another thread, Bernie's shot goes up, IMO, from zero to about 40% against Trump or Cruz. But it's still likely he loses.

IMO Bernie's best shot would be against Cruz. I know the numbers show otherwise right now, but Cruz is a horrible person that the more you hear him speak and learn about him the worse your opinion gets. First off, I think Trump will moderate some if he secures the nomination. Secondly, with Trump, you'd be on camera in debates against a man who is totally at home there, very smart, and is just lying in wait to make you look like a fool at any turn. It would be awfully hard for anyone to hold up 1 on 1 with Trump on camera no matter who you are, think what you will about his politics.

I like it here. Heard a lot of good things about it and had been lurking for a while. And I tend to be a little obsessive compulsive. So it's just as likely you won't see me for 3 months. Been on bed rest so I've had a lot of time on my hands.

I like you here too Higgs. You seem like an honest guy. Welcome.

Trump's best asset is his smarts...he'll outquick Hillary and Bernie in a debate IMHO.
I don't know, I think Trump would have a hard time with Bernie. Trump is a counterpuncher. If you don't punch him you render him useless. Bernie wouldn't take his bait.

Bernie has some street to him though, I think he's the only one capable of not only debating trump but getting him off his game.

Trump will debate like ray Leonard fought, with well times flurries of French pastry that don't do damage but impress judges.

It will be bush vs gore all over again, the wise cracking guy against the bookish nerd

"Many young people believe you are dishonest."

That was the toughest question of the night. It might be one of the toughest I've ever heard. Bernie in his entire career has probably never faced a question like that on national television. How many people have?

And Hillary not only answered, she hit it out of the park. "I'm still standing." Can she get Elton John to join her campaign? I think she won over some people tonight, we'll see.

Gosh, I wonder why Bernie's never gotten a question like that, lesseee, why would Bernie have never gotten that question....

- btw subreferencing a crap Elton song from his coke induced mid 80s years is probably not the best way to reach the young vote in 2016...

Sorry Bernie fans: he's right.
Hillary lost to a black guy with no experience who had a name that sounded like Osama. What exactly is her electability?
JFC. Not that lame narrative again.

Obama was a once in a generation candidate. Not just some generic black guy who came out of nowhere with a Muslim name.

:sigh:
Hillary, if I'm not mistaken, has won one election in her life against a total empty suit in Santorum. EDIT laizio not santorumTo my mind, sanders is TRULY a once in a generation candidate. Never before has a person with true populist issues gotten this far down the road.

Hillary, as she has laid out with her track record tonight, is part of the problem.

Bernie's problem is he has no killer instinct. He's running against someone he seems to support. It's a bit odd.
I couldn't disagree more. The Commish has it right. Bernie's civility towards Hillary is one of the most effective weapons that he has.
I didn't say he should be uncivil. He can be civil and still attack legitimate issues.
Lazio got torpedoed by being "aggressive"against Hillary in the ny senate race. I feel like that moment has been in his mind as he's not exactly cuddly

This was like a court case.

Prosecution - Sanders - went first, built his case.

Defense - Hillary - went second, built herself back up.

Now we await the jury's decision.

But imagine if in every court case the jury had to spend several hours listening to a third guy, neither prosecution nor defense, in the middle of the trial.

It really isn't odd though, considering in every election, the person who drops out, or finishes second or third or wherever, supports the winner. It just shows that he is more honest than all the others, including Hillary. Because I can guarantee you, that if Bernie wins the nomination, Hillary would support him.

That was her response? "I am still standing"? How exactly is that hitting it out of the park? Just tells me she is a damn good liar.....

Do you see the fundamental problem with this?

There's a very specific explanation for this.

Hillary just crushed that question about being the first democratic nominee heading into Iowa with the specter of a federal indictment hanging over her head! /Tim

?

There's no specter of anything, she just spends a third of all her debate and interview time talking about FBI investigations, secreting away public documents, Wall Street connections and dishonesty.

Yes, but you don't support them during the election.

I think Bernie's discretion is part of his popularity. There are plenty of people within the Democratic Party, like me, who don't love Hillary Clinton, but who also don't think she's the devil. People who think that the decision to work from a private email server was weird, but not illegal. People who think that she's too beholden to special interest money, but in a way that just about every other mainstream politician is. People who think she's been a competent, if not an exceptional, public servant. Bernie appeals to me when he talks about his ideas and his policy prescriptions. Not when he talks about Clinton in the same way that some deranged wingnut would.

When does he do that? I don't follow it as closely as most here but he seems to bend over backwards to not attack her when I'm listening- many think to the detriment of his own chances to win.

Has this happened? He seems to be very cognizant of his words with respect to Hillary. I missed the "debate" last night, but to this point all he's done is point out her ties to Wall Street and contrasted that to himself. DId he lose his marbles and go "deranged wingnut" last night?
