Denard 'Shoelace' Robinson and his Chris Johnson potential (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Denard Robinson is up to 212 pounds this offseason.
Shoelace checked in at 199 pounds at last year's Combine. "He has taken a different approach," coach Gus Bradley said of Robinson's offseason. "He’s coming in to get ready and he understands he’s a running back." Robinson won't get a shot at the starting job, but is getting another opportunity to establish himself as a play-making, change-of-pace back. He's a name to file away in deeper PPR leagues.

A 212 lb Denard Robinson interests me.
OP needs to change his comparison from CJ2YPC to felix jones
More like Jamaal Charles.

Yes. I said that.

Denard Robinson - RB - Jaguars

Jaguars RB Denard Robinson played through nerve damage in his hand last season.

"Denard couldn't catch a cold last season, but he's had the best offseason of anyone," former NFL defensive end and current Jags radio analyst Jeff Lagemen said. Robinson was slow to transition from college quarterback to pro running back, but he's progressing toward a change-of-pace and gadget guy role behind Toby Gerhart this season. Jordan Todman will also be in the mix for backup carries.

Denard Robinson turning heads in Jacksonville

Posted by Michael David Smith on June 19, 2014, 6:18 AM EDT

Last year, former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson arrived in Jacksonville and was dubbed an “offensive weapon” who could do a little of everything. But that weapon shot blanks: Robinson gained just 66 yards on 20 carries, never caught a pass, threw incomplete on his only pass attempt, and fumbled three times.

This year, the Jaguars have scrapped the offensive weapon label and said Robinson is a backup running back to starter Toby Gerhart, and General Manager Dave Caldwell says Robinson now looks like a perfect fit at running back. Caldwell also says Robinson is showing no signs of the elbow and hand injuries that caused him to drop passes last season.

“We knew the transition from quarterback to running back would take some time when we drafted D-Rob,” Caldwell told USA Today. “I told him the other day, ‘I don’t want to jinx you, but you haven’t dropped a ball since we started OTAs.’ He has excellent speed and ability to take it to the end zone from anywhere on the field.”

Ex-Jaguar Jeff Lageman, who now serves as the team’s radio analyst, said Robinson has had “the best offseason of anyone.” And Robinson himself says he thinks people are going to be excited by what they see of him this season.

“I want to be a dangerous playmaker,” Robinson said. “When they give me the ball, I want to be that guy where everybody in the stadium goes, ‘Whoa!’”

That’s the kind of playmaker Robinson was at Michigan. Jacksonville could use that kind of explosiveness in its offense.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Jaguars reporter Mike DiRocco expects RB Denard Robinson to be a "significant part of the offense" if he continues his improvement as a pass catcher.
Nerve damage in his hand caused Robinson to be completely uninvolved in the passing game last season. Now recovered, Robinson was more active as a receiver during spring practices, only dropping one pass over 12 sessions. Robinson should win a role as a change-of-pace back behind entrenched starter Toby Gerhart, but he is still a long-shot to have any fantasy value this season.

Denard Robinson - RB - Jaguars
Jaguars.com believes second-year RB Denard Robinson looked "far more confident" this offseason after recovering from the nerve damage in his hand.
The nerve issue marred both Robinson's senior year at Michigan and his rookie campaign in Jacksonville, but he's supposedly back to 100 percent. That will have to be true for Shoelace to get involved as a receiver after he caught exactly zero passes in 2013. Robinson has play-making upside, but it's unlikely to translate to fantasy value in any format this season.

Denard Robinson rushed six times for 34 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Bears.
Through two preseason games, Robinson has 13 carries for 70 yards (5.38 YPC) and a TD. Like he did in the preseason opener, Shoelace operated as the third-team back, but this time was ahead of rookie Storm Johnson. The converted quarterback looked very slippery around the edge, reeling off runs of 12 and nine yards. He looked considerably better than Jordan Todman, who had No. 2 duties all to himself. At very least, Robinson has put himself in the conversation to serve as Jax's COP back. He's a more-talented player than Todman.
Robinson supposedly turned heads all spring... I think when he was drafted as a conversion project everyone thought this would take time. Through two games he's looked pretty solid as a COP. Todman on the other hand has a total of 13 carries for 23 yards so far, splitting time between the first and second team offense. I would think as RW speculates on this one (for once) that Robinson is closing in on the COP role in that backfield.

Some may argue this doesn't matter behind Gerhart, and I agree to an extent while Gerhart is healthy. I question how long that's going to last given his injury history, however. Robinson's becoming a bit more interesting...

Todman might not have impressive stats but he was money on blitz pick up and pass protection.

Thanks -- I didn't see the game as I was traveling. Just saying he's been a relative non-factor in terms of gaining yardage while Robinson has repeatedly found success.

The Jaguars' "unofficial" Week 1 depth chart has Denard Robinson listed as the No. 2 running back ahead of Jordan Todman.

The move comes after Robinson's strong preseason. Shoelace rushed 21 times for 94 yards (4.47 YPC) and a score, adding two catches for 24 yards. Todman was far-less effective, rushing 29 times for only 63 yards (2.17 YPA) and a TD. He was 12/107/0 as a receiver. It appears Shoelace will operate as the Jags' primary change-of-pace back behind Toby Gerhart, but he'd be in a committee with Todman, and perhaps Storm Johnson, were Gerhart to go down. Robinson is not a re-draft consideration outside of exceptionally-deep PPR leagues.

Jaguars OC Jedd Fisch expects Denard Robinson to become part of the team's weekly offensive plan.

"I hope so," Fisch said. "My plan is for that to be the case. We're certainly expecting him to." Robinson is listed as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart, ahead of Jordan Todman. He's going to be the primary change-of-pace back to open the season. Robinson doesn't figure to have a major role early on, but could push for 7-10 touches behind Toby Gerhart.

Strange. The words "I hope so" coming from the OC are odd. It is, you know, within the OC's own control.....

He looked much improved to me. So much so, I moved him ahead of Todman after his week 2 preseason performance. I've also drafted him a couple if times in redraft as I am not sold on Gerhart and think he gets a shot if Gerhart underwhelms.

"I hope so," Fisch said. "My plan is for that to be the case. We're certainly expecting him to. His speed is outstanding. He's stronger and tougher, bigger and faster. All of that is really good. It's exciting to watch him improve from Year One to Year Two."

"I think Denard is getting more confident, more comfortable with the ball and holding onto the football," Fisch said. "His ball security has improved. He's catching the ball better. With that, I think he's playing at a confident, higher level."

It is a bit disturbing that "holding onto the football" is the biggest area of improvement. That is so fundamental to being a RB.....that said, good that the OC sees him having outsanding speed, being stronger & tougher, etc.

We'll see what that means. I'm expecting him to have 3-5 carries, 1-2 catches per week.

Sort of. You can plan to use him but you have to hope he plays well enough to continue to earn being part of the plan.

As we all know, the guy is a burner but I'm not sure he could ever hold up as a RB. He was always banged up at Michigan and had zero physicality.

Its exciting to see him move up the chart which means he's improving, Adding the weight was very important for his long term development. Having full use of his hands are positives. He's very elusive in space. To me he's a player with a high ceiling and worth obtaining.

Hopefully he continues developing and by this time next year is viewed as starting RB caliber. Can he be physical enough to run between the tackles and pass block? That's the turning point.

Rotoworld:

Denard Robinson rushed eight times for 33 yards in the Jaguars' Week 3 loss to the Colts.

He missed his lone target in the passing game. Robinson saw most of his playing time in late-game garbage time, but was involved as a change-of-pace back early on as well. He's clearly ahead of Jordan Todman on the depth chart.

Denard Robinson - RB - Jaguars

Speaking Monday, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said Denard Robinson will continue to get more reps.

Shoelace's eight carries were just one fewer than Toby Gerhart's in Sunday's loss, but the majority of his work came in garbage time. With Gerhart averaging a wretched 2.4 yards per carry on his first 34 totes behind the Jags' shaky line, Jax really has no choice but to get Robinson more involved. That being said, Gerhart is still the clear starter, with Robinson little more than an RB4/5 stash for fantasy purposes.

Rotoworld:

Denard Robinson out-snapped Toby Gerhart 36-21 in Sunday's loss at San Diego.

Gerhart hasn't necessarily been demoted, but this backfield is devolving into a timeshare. Robinson ended up with 12 touches (nine carries, three catches) while Gerhart got 11 (10 carries, one catch). The Florida Times Union expects D-Rob to continue to play a regular role against the Steelers next week. Both Jaguars backs will be shaky flex plays while fighting through poor blocking.

Is this the official breakout? Can he be the primary back here? 20 carries today and he does well with it; next number of carries to a RB is Storm Johnson with 3.

Rotoworld:

Denard "Shoelace" Robinson gave the Jaguars a running game in Sunday's Week 7 victory, rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries in Jacksonville's win over Cleveland.

Looking like a legitimate running back, the converted Michigan quarterback mixed chain-moving gains with explosive runs on the perimeter. He handled the 22 touches compared to Storm Johnson's six, and Jordan Todman's one. "Shoelace" should remain Jacksonville's lead back until further notice, even when Toby Gerhart (foot) returns. The Jaguars will face the Dolphins' stout run defense next. Robinson is worth owning in all leagues, but is likely to struggle on the ground against Miami.

22-127-1

That's a nice day. Wish I'd know he'd be getting 20+ carries. :hot:

Does he take the job for real now? The Jags got their first win. Why mess with it if it's working? I don't know that he's Jamal Charles or Chris Johnson, but he looked pretty damn good.

How is there not more discussion in here??
I don't think anyone is truly buying in yet. It wasn't announced that Robinson would be the starter today. Storm had a td. Everyone was high on storm. Gerhart is out with an injury. No one knows what to expect when gerhart comes back.

I own him cheap in dynasty but I'd feel a lot better about putting him in my lineup if Bradley announced him the starter.

Never, ever judge an RB by what he does against the Browns. The Browns D makes EVERYONE look good. I could run behind 6 or 7 of my buddies, against the Browns, and go for about 25-110-2.

then judge him vs what his teammate did vs. the browns, night and day difference between shoelaces and storm today.
