Derek Anderson (1 Viewer)

I'm sure some homers have good information but I would be surprised if it wasn't an open competition.

I personally believe Anderson will win the job but whoever wins it should be at least a #2 qb in all but the smallest of leagues.

What are his chances of holding onto the starting job and being a viable fantasy QB2?
I think he lost his job late last year. but my thought is that if he can put last season aside and play like he did the year before, there is no way he wont win the job again. This guy passed for just under 3800 yards and he wasnt even the opening day starter. (if he was, hey may have had a 4000 yards season)Things like this dont just happen by accident. I can see a fluke 3000 yard season from a QB who caught some people by surprise (ala Tim Couch), but anything over 3500 yards isnt exactly a common occurance. Also, I dont think Brady Quinn has that kind of upside. (at least not yet)

I was able to get a hold of both Anderson and Quinn in my dynasty draft last year. At the time I figured it was an up-and-coming offense and one of the two should emerge as a strong pick. Now I'm looking at cutting both of them. I think right now it will be a lot like last year. I'm guessing Anderson will start the season due to his experience, contract and that one monster season you mentioned. However, I think Anderson will be given the hook quickly if the Browns start off slowly.

The biggest problem these guys have is that the Browns are just a bad team. I watched a lot of their games last year and they just looked completely out of sync almost the entire season. Their offensive line really choked and couldn't protect Anderson very well at all. But when they did, his passes were either inaccurate or dropped much of the time. Quinn had one strong game in week 10 but didn't really do much the rest of the time.

I wouldn't want Anderson as my QB2.

Barring injury, Quinn's starting week 1. The Browns want to run a ball control offense, which QB would you rather have when running a ball control offense - a vertical gun slinger that can't put any touch on his short(er) throws? or Captain Checkdown? Besides, Mangini's already said Quinn's got a leg up and DA's always been an awful practice QB. I have DA in a dynasty league in which I own Quinn, if I didn't own Quinn and had DA I'd try to trade him to the Quinn owner and if I'm unsuccessful consider cutting him if my roster dictates.

He is still a potential trading option, so if there's an injury elsewhere...you never know.

I wouldn't either. (Want DA as my QB2)

I have no explanation for what happened last year. I just know it was ugly.

I just don't see much upside to Anderson. He doesn't strike me as a smart game manager who can get decent fantasy points without going deep. I also question how much Mangini is going to let him sling it around.

That's why I think Quinn will be the starter for most of the season, even if Anderson gets the early nod. I think Quinn is better able to play within the system and play smart.

That said, I wouldn't want to go into the season with either one as my QB2. I don't know that I would want to roster both to make sure I had the Cle QB. I'd probably rather draft a better, more consistent and proven QB2 earlier.

If Quinn shows anything at all, I would not be surprised to see Anderson traded at some point late in camp or early in the season (especially if another team suffers a QB injury). Mangini does not seem overly impressed with DA and he brought over a QB that he is familiar with. DA simply does not appear to be a match for the new offense.

Seemed to me that when the Browns were expected to lose / not be good, he played extremely well. Once the talk of playoff possibilites came around (end of 07) he fell apart. There were high hopes for last year and again he was pretty awful.

I wouldnt want him either if last year's results are a true indication of what he can do.I agree with this statement. The team didnt look right. the O-line couldnt block, and they looked terrible on both sides of the ball. Part of this has to be blamed on the coaching. Part may need to be blamed on inadequate personell. I'm sure the O-Line was given a wakeup call when they drafted Mack (their second first round pick spent on an O-Lineman in 3 years) but now it is up to the coaches to get Mack and Thomas to a point where this line is solid. This will make a huge difference in the performance of the team as a whole. the only question is.... which QB wins the starting job, and will the coaching be there.
