First franchise tag goes to DeSean Jackson

On the 11th day, the first franchise tag rested. On the shoulders of No. 10.

The Eagles announced on Thursday afternoon the placement of their franchise tender on receiver DeSean Jackson.

“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” said Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman said. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

The move comes as no surprise. The Eagles weren’t going to let Jackson walk away without compensation. Now, they can try to trade him to a team that would be willing to give Jackson a long-term deal.

Staying with the Eagles is best case. If he's motivated he will rebound nicely.
The big question has to be if he wasn't motivated in a contract year will he be motivated once he gets a large deal...the kid has a lot of talent but there's some risk giving him the contact he's going to be looking for...

As an Eagles fan i am crossing my fingers for a trade...I would rather a WR that plays every down.

I think if you are a fantasy owner, you have to be relieved.

Tagging DeSean, even with the other weapons they have, and the attitude last year, shows how important DeSean is to Philly.

I think he'll be underrated next year, as people are sour on him a bit from the antics last year. I think he'll be happily rich next year, and get back to catching bombs from Vick.

I remember when the Eagles used to make sound financial decisions. Days gone by I suppose.
The season hasn't started yet. If Desean is still on the team come July, you can make this statement. I think the Eagles will trade DJax.
To who and for what?
Word around the campfire is that Chicago already asked about his availability. I think Philly would take a 2nd round pick for him.

:goodposting: DeSean always said he didnt mind being franchised. This is his first big contract (in NFL terms). That makes him happy. DeSean will be good, and motivated this upcoming year. He has always been an all or nothing player. This year, there will be many more "alls" than there are "nothings".

I'm biased. But the fact that he can make such a difference on both offense and special teams makes him a special player. He doesn't just spread the defense when he's running routes, he makes plays. Further, special teams is a huge part of game that a lot of people don't give credit to. Just ask the niners.Given that, he's a special need for the Eagles right now. Reid needs results now and DeSean can give him that. That's why his value is where it is. Since I don't right the checks, I like it.

He's a one-trick pony and the league is onto him.

He will not rebound nicely. He is what he is - a speedy decoy.

He is 25 years old, and he has over 4000 receiving yards in his first 4 seasons. He is an elite deep threat that is still a year or two away from hitting his prime.

Desean was drafted in the first round. What were eagles fans expectations of him when he was chosen in 2008, and has he fallen short of expectations?

Funny you use those exact words when he is the only player in NFL history to go to the Pro Bowl at two different positions in the same year(WR/KR). But keep acting like you know what you are talking about  This guy will get 3x the amount of $$ this year than he has earned his entire career to date. He is a little whiner sometimes, but is def. more than a one-trick pony. Vital piece to the offense moving forward.

Disagreed. For a player that relies exclusively on speed (and of such small stature), I think we've seen his best. For players that want to work on their craft (improving route running), I'd agree. I've seen no indication from Desean. He's Lee Evans with competent QB's.We're not talking Steve Smith here.

If DeSean was a one trick pony then teams and coaches would have been able plan against him and to some degree take him out of the game. It looks like they haven't. Obviously a speedy WR will get a catch every so often because it will happen. But DeSean has done more than that. Hes 1 of 4 other WR's who's amassed 900 yards in their first 4 seasons. Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Joey Galloway & Bob Hayes are the other 4. As you mentioned QB's do play a part of that. I cannot argue that point. But I still argue that the wr plays a huge part of the game himself. He doesn't just run a straight bomb and hope for the best.edit : I got some of my info from here http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2012/3/3/2842142/desean-jackson-is-more-valuable-than-you-think
