On Clayton's ESPN blog, he says that he expects the 9ers to sign Foster in the next couple of days. It is Insider, so a link will not work, but he mentioned that SF was the first to contact him and he would b the most serious threat to Gore's carries since Barlow was there.

SF 49ers players rumored to be getting: Link:

RB DeShaun Foster

ESPN's John Clayton expects the 49ers to sign free agent running back DeShaun Foster "in the next couple of days." San Francisco was quick to contact Foster after he was cut last Thursday. The Niners would reportedly use him as a complement to Frank Gore, but he'd be the biggest threat for carries Gore's faced since Kevan Barlow in '05.

DE Justin Smith

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com is reporting that the 49ers are negotiating with defensive end Justin Smith.

WR Muhsin Muhammad

According to ESPN, the 49ers are one of three teams that may be interested in acquiring the services of wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad. ESPN states that he "would likely fill the slot in San Francisco, as Mike Martz needs speed and quickness outside." The other teams that may be interested are the Redskins and Panthers and ESPN seems to feel that a spot in Carolina would make the most sense.

WR Javon Walker

According to the Denver Post, the San Francisco 49ers are one of nine teams that are expected to at least inquire about a trade for Denver Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker. The other teams include Tampa Bay, Dallas, Washington, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Chicago and the New York Jets.

LB Lance Briggs

Various rumors that the 49ers are interested in linebacker Lance Briggs. However, the NFL is currently investigating charges that the 49ers tampered last season making overtures to the linebacker.

I dont see him as a threat to Gore to be honest. Good insurance in case of injuries, thats about it.

Thats what I was thinking. Gore has accomplished more then foster ever did and is a more complete back. Foster would provide good insurance for a team trying to rise up then their current backups.Always good to have a solid backup RB and one that can keep your main man fresh for the whole game and the whole season.

That is the pure definition of oxymoron.

I was actually hoping Foster would end up in chicago. I would feel safer as a Benson owner. :goodposting:

so basically the 49ers are turning into the Redskins.

I'm mildly surprised Foster would not re-up in Carolina in hopes that he could continue fending off a less proven D.Williams than likely being stuck behind a more proven RB in Gore. Maybe he was simply not offered anything to stay in Carolina.

Yeah, once Martz gets rolling Gore might get 8 and Foster 2 per game..... :lmao:

Gore is clearly the starter but he has had injury issues. Still, you have to question backing up an injury risk with another injury risk. I think this pretty much punctures any value Foster may have had in dynasty.

Maybe he accepted what Carolina already did.

Carolina cut him.

Carolina cut him.
Yes, because he was due $4.5 million. However, there was speculation they might re-sign him back for less. Are you suggesting he's signing for that in SF?

so basically the 49ers are turning into the Redskins & Cowboys.
Redskins over pay for the FA's they sign. Briggs, smith & Walker are worth every penny...Muhsin can go sign with Carolina.

That's no threat at all.

I'm expecting pigs to start flying at any moment.

With Hicks a free agent, Robinson not all that good, and Clayton still developing... they need to bring in someone.

Foster is better than what they have at back-up.

Deshaun has proved to be a effective change of pace RB before(albeit 5years ago), hopefully he has something left in the tank. its prolly a laterall move in terms of running behind the panthers Oline to running behind the niners Oline. someone is needed tho to give Frank a breather and keep him healthy if Martsz actually calls consecutive run plays this season. Frank runs much the same way Marion Barber does where injury is a concern especially with his history.

Bernard Berrian is another 49er possibility. Berrian has said on many occasions "I wanna play for the 49ers". :goodposting:

Gore is a far better RB, but I could see them using Foster a lot to prevent Gore from wearing down or getting injured. I think Foster is a better receiver than Gore... nothing to back that up, just my impression at this point, so I could be wrong. Will be interested to see hwo things work out with Martz there.

Not trying to nitpick, but your statement made me think so I looked at the numbers.Over the past 2 years gore caught 114 balls (61/53) while Foster caught 57 (32/25). My question about the bolded is what gives you that impression? Did Carolina not throw as much to their RBs as SF did?

Gore is a far better rb then foster. However, bringing in a former starter to help keep Gore fresh is an excellent idea. If Foster isnt commanding too much money (he shouldnt since he isnt worth it) then its good to have a guy that can play in case of emergency.

Ya, it's probably a lateral move in terms of offensive lines but IMO it's not a lateral move in terms of his importance to the team. In Carolina, he was part of a 1a, 1b RB situation with Williams. In SF, he will clearly be the backup....a pretty good backup but he would be a backup.I think a good pickup for SF, the guy knows how to play and won't be taking the pounding of an every down back and could prove to be a good move.

Like I said, nothing to back it up but my impression. I guess Foster looks a little more natural catching the ball. And no Carolina didn't throw to their RBs that much...I looked it up, and Gore has a better YPR than Foster, as well as more receptions... may be just that I've been forced to see Foster play more, LOL

I agree 100% about Gore being far better than Foster...

Could be a locker room move/addition too. Listening to John Fox on NFL radio (or NFL TA one or the other), sounds like Foster is a real professional, focused, hard working, good attitude, works and plays through injuries, etc. Not sure the status of that locker room, but seem to remember some grumbling all during the season last year?? Could be part of the plan to build some comraderie there?? Either way, I'll go with the concensus and say Foster isn't a threat to steal too many starters jobs in the NFL. If he goes to a team w/o an established starter, he could still be a nearly 1000 yd back, imo.

:lmao: I'm not sure what 'not a threat' means to you, as DeAngelo was never able to beat Foster out as the starter. Foster was cut for salary cap reasons, not because DA beat him out. However, I do not think Foster is a threat to Gore at all.

Of course his is. These guys will have to arm wrestle for the best spot in the training room...
