***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (9 Viewers)

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Minnesota Twins

Site: Target Field in Minneapolis

Records: Tigers, 68-57 (2nd in AL Central); Twins, 56-70 (5th in AL Central)

Schedule

Friday: LHP Robbie Ray (1-3, 5.33 ERA) vs. LHP Tommy Milone (6-4, 3.99 ERA), 8:10 p.m., FSD

Saturday: RHP Buck Farmer (0-0, 7.20 ERA) vs. TBD, 1:10 p.m., FSD, MLB Network

Saturday: RHP Justin Verlander (10-11, 4.76 ERA) vs. RHP Trevor May (0-2, 9.00 ERA), 8:10 p.m., FSD

Sunday: RHP Max Scherzer (14-4, 3.07 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Gibson (11-9, 4.13 ERA), FSD, 2:10 p.m.

Scouting the Twins: If the Tigers are going to get their offense going, now might be a good time. The starting rotation for the Twins ranks 14th in the American League in ERA (5.01) and WHIP (1.43). The Tigers also will avoid Phil Hughes, the only Twins starter with an ERA below 4.00. The Tigers likely will need to get the bats going since they will be starting rookies Robbie Ray and Buck Farmer in the first two games of the series followed by Justin Verlander, who missed his most recent scheduled start due to shoulder soreness. The Twins rank near 12th in the American League in batting average (.247) and eighth in OPS (.699), but those numbers have been better in recent weeks. In the month of August, the Twins rank third in the American League in batting average (.266) and second in OPS (.757). Combine the starting rotation for the Twins and the unsettled rotation for the Tigers and it seems unlikely that Tigers fans will relive the offensive struggles the Tigers had Thursday, when they finished with just four hits in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

When you turn the game on in the third and Phil Coke is pitching, you just turn it off and walk away.
When you're halfway to the East end, stop for gas & discover Phil Coke has been the most effective of the five pitchers you've trotted out...aw #### it, gonna be great weather on Shelter Island this weekend.

Great game. This team is really playing outstanding ball right now. I hope they can keep this level of play up.
Ray looked great the first inning..mowed the Twins down like a AA squad.

Farmer with some terrible luck there. Should have been a double play ball and then a phantom HBP that Ausmus didn't challenge.
When is the last time Cabrera hit a HR? Or drove the ball with any kind of power? Puzzling that his power seems all but gone. Ausmus is starting to look befuddled in the dugout.

He's obviously playing hurt, nothing all that puzzling. He is also swinging way too much at the first pitch, something he has said is a problem. Didn't stop him from just GIDP on the first pitch though.

I was out last night. Did Verlander have good stuff? What was his fastball hitting? The highlights I saw it seemed all the hits were off the slow curve again.

I was following online, and it seemed like he was throwing a lot of off-speed stuff. I liked the third inning where after putting runners on second and third, he struck out the next two batters and then got the third out. That's what we've missed - the ability to get the Ks to avoid some damage.

Nathan still sucks, I see. Good to see some other hitters contributing key hits.

Rajai should not be in CF, this is a disaster.
I want to like this 10 times!!
I want to dislike it 10 times, lol.
The more I watch Davis, or the more he plays the worse he looks. Horrible in the field, weak arm, crappy ABs. The only thing I like about him is when he does get on he is fun to watch. Now I know why he has never been an everyday player. Davis should get around 250 ABs a years as a 4th outfielder who can pinch run when needed.

15 for Max! VMart's big day has him creeping up on Miggy's RBI total.

KC lost, so we get one back. Back home, regular rotation ...gotta get a string going here.

In 2003 we would haven been giddy to be 2 games out of first at this stage of the season. We have a pennant race boys...

Amazed the Tigers did not sweep the Twins this week. As a Twins fan things are really bad in Minnesota. Be interesting to see what the Royals do to the Twins next, a sweep by the Royals would not be a shocker. You have to like the Tigers if JV comes around, Max has to be the leader for the cy young with 15 wins, I thought smoky was the manager today with all the pitches Max threw.

I don`t expect any more out of JV than what we have seen since the beginning of last season. Just need him to eat up some innings and not get hit too hard. 7 innings and 3 runs would be a good outing for JV at this point. Going forward the Tigers have to win when Price and Max pitch. Should have a good chance to win when Porcello pitches, hope JV can give us a 50% chance to win. If JV does not improve at all and if the Tigers make it I don`t see how he can be in the rotation. But...maybe he could close??? One inning and give me all you got.

I was really interested to see what happened after JD hit a wall after that hot start and fell back to earth. Would he do a Chris Shelton or Brennen Boesch?

Doesn't seem like it, he's continued to hit for power even when he was struggling, and now we are seeing more consistent at bats from him. I think I'm starting to get excited about having this guy under team control for the next three years, I think he's the every day RF next year and the #5 or #6 hitter (depending on FAs, VMART, and big Nick development).

Was that a "Let's Go, Joe!" chant?

Appreciate you not ####### up on my birthday. You still suck.

16 GBs for Porcello tonight. When his sinker is on, he's tough to get a rally on. Not overpowering, but he has grown up a lot as a pitcher this year.

32 games left

27 vs Central division

15 vs teams with winning records

6 vs Royals

18 at home

Royals have a similar schedule but instead of having to play the Giants, they get seven games against the Rangers and Red Sox at home. Tigers will have to earn this.

Hate to see where this team would be without him this season.

"Eligible to come off the disabled list, Tigers reliever Joakim Soria threw a bullpen session Tuesday as he continues to rehab a strained oblique."
