How do you think the Redskins will utilize these two players in the years 2010 and beyond as they approach their potential? Which player will have the better dynasty value?

 
How will they be utilized in 2010? Hard to say. No idea who the coach will be. No idea who the QB will be. (Although, I'd give Campbell an edge over Zorn in their chances of still being here in two years.) Will they still have to compete with Moss for time and Cooley for targets? What will the running game look like? Will it still be good enough to draw 8 men in the box and give the WRs more space?

Those issues, among others, are the reasons talent carries so much more value in dynasty than in redraft. Redraft is heavily skewed towards situation and talent matters less. With Thomas and Kelly, what's important is to watch preseason games to see what kind of NFL talent they have. If they have talent, they will be used come 2010. If they aren't talented enough, they won't be utilized.

As for their talent, I heard Smoot in an interview this morning. He said Thomas reminds him of Anquan Boldin. He was quick to say he wasn't claiming Thomas will be the next Boldin, but he did compare their size and talents. With Kelly, so far I've heard more about him being a good guy than I have about his abilities.

 
This is very tough to project, not only because they're both untested rookies, but also because as dgreen said there's no guarantee about the direction of the team long term and even because to a degree they could compete with each other (and Moss and Randle El) for looks at the WR position. This is all therefore based upon my supposition.

Thomas has the highest upside, with the best combination of size, speed and strength. He's built in the Boldin mold, so maybe that's a rough idea of his upside, with obviously no guarantees about how far he goes to fulfilling that potential.

Kelly has the best ability to contribute soon IMHO, with his size as a target in the red zone. He's taller, longer and more sleek than Thomas, with great hands and leaping ability. He's not as fast. I'd liken him in some respects to Michael Irvin, again with no certainty as to whether he'll ever really compare.

Most of the compliments so far out of camp, FWIW, seem to be directed at Kelly, but that's not because Thomas has been bad or anything.

 
Well, the early reports suggest Kelly will be playing the split-end and Thomas will backup Santana Moss at Flanker. Unless, the redskins feel Kelly is better and wants him to have a starting job instead, it looks like Thomas will replace Moss' role in the offense in the future

Yes, that's where they're lining up, but there's been zero talk so far about bringing an end to Moss' Redskins career.
 
If Kelly's knees hold up then I expect him to become a pretty good player. Sort of like a Keyshawn type. He was considered the more polished of the two coming out of college and he's probably smarter than Thomas, so I expect him to make a quicker adjustment to the NFL life and make an earlier impact on the field. I think he's capable of being useful in FF leagues as early as this season.

Thomas is more of a wildcard. He has more upside, but he's a risky player who probably needs some seasoning. It's impossible to say what his role will be in three years. He could be a 1,200 yard WR or he could be Mark Bradley. There's really no way of knowing at this point. I still rank him high among rookie receivers in dynasty leagues because I think he has as much star potential as any wideout in the draft.

:goodposting: You pretty much nailed it. I will add that I agree especially with the bolded part, and if that winds up being true, he will be a great buy low before next year, if not into the late part of this year. I personally like taking players with high ceilings if I think they have a decent chance to pan out. I think Thomas is one that will.

How funny was Smoot on the Junkies this morning? That interview had me laughing my ### off all the way to work. Local radio and friends that Ive talked to who have been to training camp say Malcom Kelly, Fred Davis and James Thrash have the unexpected surprises. They say so far Kelly without question looks the better of the two.
 
To answer the question "Which guy will have better dynasty value" I'd want to know two things first:

1. Is Jim Zorn's offense basically going to be a ripoff of Mike Holmgren's?

2. If the answer to #1 is "yes", then I'd want to know which wideout is going to be the starting flanker?

Then my answer would be "whichever guy is the starting flanker."

If the answer to #1 was definitively "no", then I'd probably throw my dart at Thomas.
