DFS Scandals in E.F.F.E.C.T (1 Viewer)

What gets me is how fast the NFL dropped it's pants and hopped into bed with these guys.
why
Seemed reckless and so whole-hearted. Draft King zones? In stadiums? Why this and not just regular ff? It was regular ff that really was fuelling the sport's growth. DFS was the new kid.
Apparently this is where the most money is now. I meant not surprising NFL does whatever it can to make the most money. They'll ride the train until the end and then act disgusted over what the companies are doing once the truth is revealed.

People are hoping DFS gets shut down... not realizing the same premise might affect season-long fantasy platforms. Why is everyone so dumb about this?
You sound pretty sure of yourself. I guess I'm dumb, I don't see the connection.
I can live without both if it had to be. I just dislike dfs because it has a very shady feel to it and they run commercials too much.
Very shady for sure.

Eff these guys. They've taken our beloved pastime and disfigured it into a haven for degenerate gambling. Let em burn before they turn the entire country against fantasy sports. And I've asked this before, and will again... Why are they called DraftKings when there is NO DRAFT?!?

Pulled all my $$ out of DFS sites, now working on getting all my $$ out of banks, brokerage accounts and the stock market along with life insurance policies. I'm going to covert it all into gold and bury it in my back yard in impenetrable coffee cans. You can't be too careful these days.

I wonder about the effect on hosting for season long leagues, not because those hosts/leagues can't legally distance themselves from DFS and gambling but because hosting free leagues may no longer be lucrative enough for the Yahoos and ESPNs to continue offering it - if fantasy goes through a comparable "black Friday" scenario.

I suppose if MFL was profitable before the boom, it can continue after but will the other hosts continue to host leagues solely for the traffic?

Everything on that list except for dfs is heavily regulated to specifically increase the security of your money. Terrible analogies.

I don't know about you, but whenever I go to the ESPN Fantasy page, it's loaded with ads. For as long as ESPN and Yahoo Fantasy have been around, I don't think they would stop hosting free leagues because of no more DFS. I know I've been using Yahoo for FFB for at least 15 years and it has been free the entire time. I don't see them wanting to shut it down because DFS goes away. There's still millions of people who play seasonal fantasy that would need a site to track everything.

Why does it bother you so much that people withdraw their money from the DFS site? If eveything blows over and the game is still standing, is it that hard to deposit some money back into the site? Will probably get a matching bonus for coming back.

The plot thickens: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/daily-fantasy-sports-sites-ordered-shut-down-nevada-232111951--spt.html;_ylt=A0SO8yRJbCBWJOAApc3BGOd_;_ylu=X3oDMTByNWU4cGh1BGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--

This puts the DFS industry in a tough spot. I am not lawyer but if they apply for a gambling license to continue to operate in Nevada wouldn't that be an admission that it is gambling and not a game of skill?

BTW, put in the camp of growing sick of their commercials.
THought the same thing. Kind of like a poison pill. Sure, you CAN operate here. Just admit what you are.

You're seriously making this comparison?

Totally agree.(Except you "draft" a team every week) But otherwise I'm with you,a greedy bunch of corporate

aholes has dragged the fantasy Sports Hobby to the abyss. I hope the traditional year long game withstands

this mess and the Kings and Duels die a quick death.

P.S. I'm sick of the commercials too. :X

And to the many happy users of the sites that have a great time playing? Eff them too?

And there's a lot of commercials for other industries/businesses that I would rather not see but I'm not going on a crusade to shut them down.

Some of you guys sound like whiny, little girls.

The 1% of "happy users" who are having a great time playing and winning 97% of the money will have many other avenues to use in pursuit of their gambling hobby.

Never said I wanted to go on a crusade to shut down the commercials, just stated I didn't like them.

And if I sound like a "whiny, little girl",well....o.k. I sound like a whiny little girl. Seems to work for them.

This is sad. People are looking at all of this with such blinders on and are not open to other viewpoints.

Just saw that Colorado will be making a decision next week on whether to continue to allow DFS in the state.
Nevada,a state that knows gambling says you're gambling.

Colorado, where you can legally buy a joint, questions your legitimacy.

Mr. Fogarty if you please:......"I see a bad moon rising!...." :headbang:

i don't really do DFS, but it should definitely be legal, then again all gambling should.

The big sites did this to themselves though, they catered to the top 1% and let them run wild and do super shady things. The sites themselves are the main ones to blame for their potential demise.

To me it's not about if it should be legal or not.. It's wether or not it should be an unregulated industry who cannot police itself and allowing sharks with a competitive advantage to rake most of the money.

I can't see how any reasonable person could think the DFS industry should be left unchecked.

Haha. Finally something we agree on!

Best post of this entire thread.

Old people afraid of new, awesome things.....so sad.
I know. They're missing out. Same way people were scared of online poker. So dumb.

I was skeptical of DFS because of the people using data I didn't have, and the whales using algorithms and resources we don't have to stack the deck in their favor.

However, your strong arguments have convinced me I am being silly, and have nothing to worry about.

I'm still a little confused, are we old people scared of new, awesome things, or whiny little girls?

Can we be both? I need to know before I flush, sorry I mean INVEST, some money over at FanDuel.

Why can't you just choose not to play and let others play (very happily I might add) if they choose to?

I'm not stopping anyone from playing at all.

Why aren't you just playing happily instead of insulting people (REPEATEDLY) who have some questions about this business model that is CLEARLY not designed to be an even playing field?

Actually, yeah, you are helping stop people from.playing with your misinformation about DFS.

How exactly do the "whales" have the decks stacked in their favor? What do they know that we don't?

Anyone can win at DFS if they spend the time constructing a good lineup.

LOL. Scream and call everyone a whiny little girl because they don't want to be cheated and robbed by a bunch of gambling junkie crooks. That's awesome. Do you work for FD or DK?

Forgive if this sentiment was already stated,

On principal, I think if we spent the time to construct seasonal leagues that are freely hosted on several sites. Then why couldn't one of us(fantasy footballers) construct a dfs on another freely hosted site? We can just do it with our buddies then and keep the money in house.

Why give it out to shady people who take a cut? Its not completely neccessary. Its basically the argument of buying local vs. a walmart. Pros and cons seem similar to me

Like I said earlier in this thread, some people who don't play have a lot of anger towards it. No point in arguing with them. I've never felt robbed or cheated and have only had fun with it.

This post leads me to believe you haven't really followed the story. I am not picking a fight here, if at this point you don't know why the odds are stacked against you, I'm not sure listing them again will help. But heck, I feel like typing.

You're asking me questions that have been answered many times in this thread, and pretty much in every objective article written about this scandal.

1. I'm not spreading misinformation. Period. Don't say it if you can't back it up.

2. The whales don't "know" anything that we don't know, as far as I know. I didn't say that they did. You put those words in my mouth. What they have is the advantage of more money, time, and apparently technology, to craft lineups, and enter hundreds/thousands of entries, and tilting the field in their favor. They are NOT cheating. They are just better at this than we are, and have the added advantage of being better organized and funded. However, knowing the extent to which they are actually winning in relation to everyone else is really discouraging. Do you even know the percentages? It's staggering.

3. By the way, I'm not 100% sure that the whales DON'T know lots of things we don't know. We already know that many of the top players are on a first name basis with people from both sites. Is it really so difficult to believe that some private conversations have been happening that are not in the interest of overall fairness?

4. The whales are one problem. They are not cheating (as far as we know), just playing with more advanced equipment, and with a lot more players on their team than I am. As I said before in this thread: Just because the are cheating doesn't mean I should deposit my money in their accounts. Good for them for gaming the system within the rules. Doesn't mean I have to be a sucker.

5. You completely forgot to mention the employees from FanDuel and DraftKings that were cheating. Must have slipped your mind.

You know someone is cheating, you know you are a massive underdog to win the big prizes vs. the big players. You know this already. It's true. It's information, facts. Yet you continue to play. No problem. Enjoy. I wish you luck.

You know, we haters aren't the ones that are old and afraid of new things. It's you. Because the new thing isn't DFS, it's avoiding getting your pants pulled down once presented with facts.

BIG MONEY!!! A MILLIONAIRE EVERY WEEK!!! Can't offer that if you've only got 12 guys playing.

This too, I wouldn't mind them so much if they weren't so damn shady.
This is online gambling and they must be pulling in a ton of profits to advertise so much. Any industry that carpet bombs with ads is very lucrative.

That's not true. DFS right now is a very immature market. They could be blowing through tens of millions of backers' money on ads to grow their player base in order to assure the FD/DS duopoly is maintained, and to force all potential competition out of business. The amount of ads has absolutely no predictive power over their current profitability.

Oh god, so many of points are so ridiculous I don't even have the time to address each one...

You clearly said the "whales" can "stack the deck in their favor". Maybe you don't know the meaning of that expression but a stacked deck would indicate a LARGE advantage and all of points don't demonstrate such an advantage. You then continue to make points such as "they have more time and more money to construct better line-ups". Really? WTF? This is your argument? You're hating on them because they spend the time to build better line-ups? More power to them. This does and should give them the edge. Like anything in life, if you put in the time and hard work, you'll get better results. Same goes for your "better organized" comment. Come on, man. Stop.

And in you case you weren't aware because you obviously don't play DFS regularly, there are plenty of tournaments (and head to head for that matter) that only allow a single entry so your point about pros entering tons of line-ups into a single tournament is dumb. Just don't play those tournaments if you disagree with it.

You obviously don't play and have no clue.

Please stop talking about this topic and spreading your negativity towards DFS.

Thank you.

The bad news:

Draftkings and Fanduel will soon be done. There will be a large combination of states that will put the ca-bosh on this and rightfully so. They are cheating people out of their money for all of the reasons that have been outlined in this thread. Also, the people running these operations are schleps who lucked into this operation. There is no way they will be able to withstand the heat. I just looked at a picture of the CEO of Draftkings, he looks he just stepped out of Home Depot on a Saturday afternoon, an average toolio who has no idea how over his head he is. As a matter of fact, I think he is lucky all of this is happening right now. Make no mistake, DFS action is taking money away from other forms of daily gambling. Those forms of gambling are actually run by seasoned, organized professionals if you know what I mean. If you do not think they are trying to muscle in on this, or are behind the scenes trying to shut this down, then you are very naive.

Its the kind of situation where you disappear and die if you do not play ball.

The good news:

The biggest reason they will be done is that, unless they are all idiots, the major sports sites, probably by as soon as next year, will have their fantasy platforms set up so people can set up their own dfs leagues with friends. Imagine how popular this will be! How many 10 or 12 team leagues that have been around forever will switch to this format where you can tweak your lineup from week to week? I say many will and fantasy football will be more popular than ever.

The best part about this is that just like regular fantasy football; sites like ESPN, CBS, and Yahoo will just be doing this for free like always because it drives traffic to their sites. Any money that changes hands will be out of sight by friends just like it has been for the last 25 years or so.

This really isn't good news.

The best part about dfs is that you instantly have the ability to play when you want. If I want to play the Sunday afternoon slate and all of my friends aren't around then it doesn't happen. This model also won't be favorable to playing for cash.

Well, I guess if you just want to play a specific slate at an odd time, then you will be out of luck because what you are doing at Fan Duel is no different than calling the bookie and laying down a 10 team parlay. These guys are going to be out of luck very soon. As far as playing for cash, doesn't everybody who plays in a regular league with friends 'play for cash'? I am pretty sure that when I win, I get actual money and that when I lose, I pay.

most of my friends would have zero interest in playin a DFS style game every week. hard enough getting those clowns together to draft a team one day a year

Thank you.
I don't play any more, so I suppose you are correct about that.

I wonder, if you put in the time and hard work, and someone else cheats, and someone else throws more money at it, who gets better results?

Tell you what, feel free to post your lineups, and money spent. Right after kickoff on Sundays would be great. It'll be a great opportunity to show the haters what knowledge and hard work will accomplish.

Actually, yeah, you are helping stop people from.playing with your misinformation about DFS.

How exactly do the "whales" have the decks stacked in their favor? What do they know that we don't?

Anyone can win at DFS if they spend the time constructing a good lineup.

I dont personally disagree with anything you have said here. Its a great post, and I am a big fan of DFS, so kind of on the other side of the discussion - yet I appreciate an intelligent post.

That said...everyone who plays in these, including the "whales" is an extreme underdog. Every entry in the FD Million Dollar tournamant has a one in roughly 250,000 chance of winning the ultimate prize. The odds are stacked against everyone because there is a rake. The whales can enter more lineups because they have sophisticated software and more money to play with...but each lineup is still just one of the 250K lineups out there, with a similar chance of winning as any one lineup entered by a person who follows the sport and stays up to date on the massive amount of information that is available to us. By Saturday morning I know use percentages (to a level completely adequate to allow me to use the information to my advantage), who is hurt, what the weather looks like, and I get the FBG breakdowns of all of the strengths of defenses (run and pass). If you take the time to study the information available to you, you can enter a quality lineup every time. Doesnt mean it will win, but up until 12:59 on Sunday I feel like my lineups have as good a shot as any one other lineup out there does.

Im just one person, but I can tell you my winning percentage is horrid, yet I am up over $2500 this year and I started with $100 in my account. The payouts can be substantial, on a small wager (investment - or whatever you wish to call it). Swing for the fences enough, your average may suck, but you will hit some doubles and maybe an occasional HR. You dont have to win the million dollars to make this work, and frankly even if you lose every week you can control how much, and it is still a lot of fun. I really dont get the hate (not from you, but in general) in this thread...from either side.

I think all of us who play know that the odds are against us. We dont need to be saved. We get it. We still enjoy it. It is a great rush when you enter a solid lineup and watch your position change with every play in the primetime games. Maybe not for everyone, but for some of us, its awesome. If people think we are morons for playing a game that is stacked against us, then so be it...but keep it to yourselves. You be you, I will be me. I dont need anyone to save me.
