DH's 2012 Christmas buying guide *update for 2014 post 176* (1 Viewer)

My daughter is now three so she is old enough to have her own tastes and things she likes. We hit the toy aisle the other day and between Sofia, doc, Minnie, Dora, and Barbie...there's a lot of stuff out there.

Waiting?

2 weeks from Christmas and you still need someone to tell you what to buy for your kids?

Guess Im lucky. My daughter (5...6 in January) wants nearly everything she sees. But is largely in to Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, and now Frozen. She is getting a ton of that stuff and a Nabi 2.

My son. Legos legos and more legos. Pumped that he is getting the Millenium Falcon lego set this year from my mother. I may get more excited about building that one that he will be. Between that and Disney Infinity stuff. He may not have as much under the tree...but he is also smart enough to know how much some of those legos cost as he bought some last year with birthday money.

2 weeks from Christmas isn't Christmas Eve. Slow down turbo. Was trying to get ideas that I haven't thought of

how about a lego millenium falcon?

I'm not deranged hermit... but it's going to be Christmas buying season soon, and these are going to be freaking HUGE imo:

Lego Minecraft sets:

you punch da trees to get da wood
I still don't get this...was watching a neighbor's kid play it a few months ago.

Me: "Marcus, what are you doing?"

Marcus: "Murdering Sheep." [laughs]

Me: "Why?"

Marcus: "Because I can!" [laughs]

Combining my 9 year old son's two obsessions, Lego and Minecraft, into one ridiculously over-priced package that will provide an hour or so of entertainment until he wants the next, larger, more ridiculously over-priced package. Take my money, please. Resistance is futile.

Son loves legos and minecraft...has zero interest in these. Thinks they look terrible.
7yo son... exact same reaction. Plus he thinks they're overpriced.
So how did you teach your 7yo about the concept of "overpriced?" I have a 4 month old, so plenty of time to start that teaching.

My son pours over the lego catalogs and website... he can tell you excactly what everything costs. He looked at those Minecraft sets when they first came out and realized he could get a big set of something else for the same price.

Before he could read, similar idea- we'd take him to get a toy and tell him he could get (sim) this one small minecraft set OR all of these great things... for the same price.

I like that "comparative" buying approach. Good tip. Thanks.

This Sew Cool sewing machine looks like it will a hit for girls for Christmas. Actually a felting machine (no thread).
It is on my 7 year old's wish list.
From what I understand you can only make their patterns and use their material/kits on this machine. I would take a look at something like this for a 7 year old. Higher learning curve, more money and will require some help from parents in the beginning, but will last much longer and allow more unique and personal projects, and cost of materials will be much less. Reviews seem to indicate 7/8 year olds love it.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IIW2GF4/ref=twister_B00HYRDIXS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Quick and dirty:

Girls:

Snow Glow Elsa- Most Frozen stuff is hot, but this one is molten hot. Sells out as soon as the store is opened.

Shopkins: Another item that sells out the day it comes in.

Beedos: Stupid arts and crafts du jour. Not so hot as to sell out instantly, but popular.

Little Live Pets: Basically, fake birds and butterflies that seem real. The birds with cages are really popular.

Boys:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Yup, still. There's a 4 foot tall Michaelangelo that's available, but save your money. For every ten we get, half are broken right out of the box. Cheaply made.

Supernova Battle Rover: An Imaginext toy for younger kids. Not Impossible to find, but getting harder by the day.

Zoomer Dino/MiP Robot: Electronic toys. The Dinosaur is cool, but the robot is meh. Both sell well.

Skylanders/Infinity: Skylanders is just printing money at this point. Their business model of sending the figs out in waves was pure genius. Good luck finding the Kaos trap unless you bought the 'Dark' edition on the game ($99.99 instead of 74.99). Infinity is still a contender, but not as popular. Good luck finding Groot, they short shipped him everywhere.

I'll check the thread here and there in case anyone has questions.

My daughter has outgrown all that stuff and is getting a chrome book, and we got groot and hulk last week

Floppinho's friends at school are into Skylander.

I'm treating it like Ebola... which means I'm going to go bowling in Brooklyn with it, but also keep it as far away from my son as possible. That thing (Skylandeer more than Ebola) scares the money out of me.

eta:  thanks, DH!

I've had the most trouble finding Paw Patrol toys for my son. Amazon has them marked up to $50 a piece for these (normally $12.99) because demand is so high. I'm hoping that they will be easier to find after Thanksgiving weekend, so I'm gonna be patient.

First time buying toys for Christmas?

Absolutely not. But they haven't been available for nearly a month. So unless I want to play a ridiculous price, I play the waiting game or go with plan B.

I don't know which ones you're looking for, but I see a couple of them for $12.99

That's one of them that I have found. But I appreciate it. I'm on the lookout for Rubble, Skye, Rocky and Zuma. I've read from other sites that Skye is the rarest find. I'm looking for the ones with the vehicles (like you see on heckmann's link), not the standalone pups or the cheap racers. If you do see any, I'll be grateful for a heads up.

At least they seem to have come down a little in price to what I was seeing yesterday. But I'd still rather pay retail.

Good luck. Rubble, Rocky, and Zuma are rare. You'll never find a Skye.

My plan B is that my son gets what I have so far for Christmas and I find the rest throughout the year after Christmas for his birthday. He probably doesn't necessarily need the whole set all at once.

Rubble on the double. Now down to 3.
guh.

3yo daughter is now sticking with wanting Paw Patrol dolls/stuffed-animals.

and still going to fight the fight to keep Skylander out of chez floppo.

as far as I can tell- it's a video game, except you have to continually buy new #### to play it? or do I have this wrong? I like the creative games like Minecraft- but this just seems like a run around and shoot stuff... no creativity from the sound of it. If I'm going to have to keep buying stuff, I'll stick with Legos.

My daughter is now three so she is old enough to have her own tastes and things she likes. We hit the toy aisle the other day and between Sofia, doc, Minnie, Dora, and Barbie...there's a lot of stuff out there.
She's four now and definitely choosing her own stuff. Here is this years list:

Houston rockets basketball. (Good stuff!)

Umbrella

Hula hoop

Wedding Barbie

So for $20 I am done.

She is also getting a doc mstuffings car that she can drive. Because I'm cheap, but not when it comes to kid.

I can't find the Kaos Skylander trap anywhere. $5.99 but going for $90-300 on Ebay. Of course, this is what my boys want. #### you Skylanders! It is fun playing with my boys and the excitement they get when we can trap another villian.

I did get them Disney 2.0 and some figures.

Think i spent $700 on my son for christmas this year. Of course more than half of that was on the Wii U bundle which i really wanted myself.

Spot on re: the girl stuff. I'm drowning in Shopkins and Beedos these days

The singles of the Kaos trap have only been sold on launch day of Trap Team so far. The only time I've seen them lately is packaged with the 'Dark' edition of the game. Even than, we only seem to get the Wii version.

Say what you want about their business practices, but Skylanders has been blowing Infinity out of the water. It's almost like they're banking on the 'Pokemon' mentality of kids (gotta catch them all!) and the thrill of the hunt for the bored stay at home moms.

Reason 1A why I'm trying to avoid this.

Is the game just running around and shooting stuff? Is there anything creative attached to it (or even puzzle solving)?

My son only had the original version, but I'm guessing it's still just a button masher.

The girls stuff was easy, the stuff I mentioned absolutely flies off the shelf.

Two toys on the boy's side that has all-of-a-sudden gotten really hot are:

* Stomp and Chomp Grimlock: This one came out of nowhere. He was just sitting on the shelves for the longest time, than *bang* Black Friday hit and now we can't keep him in stock.

* Max Tow Truck: This was a brain fart on my part as he was juuuuust starting to get popular when I did the 2014 edition. Apparently they're really schilling him on Nickelodeon A LOT.
