Did we stop remembering 9/11 in here? (1 Viewer)

The view from my window last night.

I love the memorial fountains, but I've always been partial to the towers of light.
Agreed. Kind of wish they were up more than just one day a year.
fwiw- they were up all week. IIRC, that's typical
Did not know that. But I meant they should keep them up all year.

I like that it's only now- I'll look out my window in the days prior to 9/11 and see those things... and whammo- it brings me right back. Every day with them would minimize the day, IMO. and blind a lot of pigeons.

As a local, I agree. Having it every day would take away it's impact. But if it was on every day, it would give that same sensation to visitors of the city.

Yeah. That makes sense. If I lived there, it probably would take away from it. But I sure would have loved to been able to witness it when we were visiting.

I believe there is something to having the lights not on constantly. That said, is 9/11 the only time they shine? I wouldn't mind on say, memorial day and veterans day it shone. Help us remember that memorial day is more than a day to get wasted, but to celebrate those who gave their lives so we could have a day to get wasted (and I don't mean that flippantly. Our freedoms and joy are due to their sacrifice).

I live about 20 miles east of the City, and there is a hill that I drive down to where I live - if it's a clear night, we see the top stories and spire of the Freedom Tower. It's a reminder EVERY time I see it, as from that vantage point you could see the Twin Towers, pre 9/11

You can't leave lights on like that. There's a war on.

I assume you were going to finish typing "a war on terror" but the geomagnetic storm hit you before you could finish. RIP T Bell's electronics. :(

Will never forget.

But Irma sure distracted... been so busy following the news down south, I haven't looked out the window to see the towers of light.

Continued T&P to those affected.

ETA... 16 years... Amazing. :(

Honestly whenever I think of 9-11 I think of an opportunity squandered.  The war in Iraq really was an insult to all those killed in the towers.  The constant use of 9-11 for political gain sickened me and when I think of 9-11 I feel shame as an American for how we let such a tragic event change what it meant to be America.

So in reality, I try not to think of it.

I really thought it would be a national day of mourning for perpetuity. Not a holiday, but your boss wouldnt harsh you if you took the morning to go to an observational ceremony or church or graveyard or some special site or vista to think of the high cost of people getting carried away their bull####. Maybe toshiba's right - it got cheapened. All i know is Bin Laden won - that day, America went insular & sullen & selfish after it stopped being hysterical and never came back...........

I'd say 6 months later. but yeah... after 6 months of lots of mutual respect and appreciation- even worldwide- what you said.

This is a much classier way of saying the feelings this day evokes for me every year.  It's sad to reflect on the memory of that day.  It sickens me to think of the mass murder the government committed in its wake.  That this tragedy became an opportunity for sociopaths and regimechangers to launch a belligerent bloodbath around the world.  Our government really owes a debt of gratitude to the terrorists, because without them nothing close to an empire of this scale would have been possible.

The terrorists won that day.  The ones that brought down the towers and the obscene warpigs that kill innocent people in our name.

Man, this is dark. Look on the bright side- at least we have one day a year where conservatives act like New Yorkers are Americans!

Not really where I was thinking this thread would go when I came in today but I guess 16 years is about the right amount of time to turn all bougie about it.

This thread is about 9/11 and how we remember it.  I don't bring up 9/11 at parties but I don't really get invited to them either.  If you got something to contribute here I invite you to mention it.  Not real worried what an edgy public school teacher that can't seem to keep a messageboard alias straight thinks about that.

Sorry, I take that back.

You must be a gigantic pain in the ### to be around in all social situations.

One thing I'll always remember is the support that NY got from the rest of the country. From emergency personnel driving in with firetrucks and other gear to the little restaurants from out of state that set up shop along the roads to feed those that were trying to help. NY takes a lot of crap, and rightly so some times, but it was amazing to see how the rest of the country had our back during this.
