Do players need less time to develop now? (1 Viewer)

We had 14 hours in the car this weekend going to the Vikes Bears game from Chicago to MN and back. 6 guys all from the same dynasty league, some of us playing for 10 years now, and the topic of development and production came up.

I seem to remember that there was a '3rd year' WR 'rule' and that rookie QBs rarely started. In the past few years, though, it seems to have changed significantly.

Off the top of my head

Cam

RGIII

Dalton

Ryan

Flacco

Luck

Nicks

Green

Julio

Cobb (2nd year)

Demarius

Denarius Moore

And others I'm probably missing.

Has it always been this way? Is this something you guys have been factoring into redraft and rookie draft position? Or is the developing a QB and 3rd year WR old wisdom just a myth?

Is it because of a change in the college game? Pressure on GMs and coaches to start high draft picks right away?

I think it's coaching staffs modifying their offense to fit their QB vs. forcing their QB to fit their system that has really eased the transition and produced instant results.

I think college's too have changed and more are running pass orientated offenses, if not outright Pro Style offenses.

yes. throw all that out the window.

3 things are different.

1) like az said, qb's and wr's are better prepared to handle an nfl passing offense. you don't have to teach a qb to progress through his reads anymore because he has already been doing it for 3-4 years.

2) because of #1, nfl scouts are better able to see weather or not a qb or wr would be able to do the things needed to succeed in the nfl. nowadays, the QBs who can't handle read progression for example, wont succeed it in college. if they dont succeed in college, they aren't drafted in the 1st round of the nfl. in the past, scouts may not have had enough information to be able to see weather or not a qb was capable of those things. same goes for WRs.

3) the rule changes in the nfl. it use to be very tough for WRs to learn how to deal with the physicality of corners in the nfl. some were never able to figure it out. now, thats not much of a problem anymore.

#2 and #3 are also why we see less QB and WR busts in the early rounds.

basically, the NFL has a much better picture of how a player will preform in the NFL thanks to the college passing game progressing.

The rule changes are huge. There are players in the past who failed miserably who would look good today. It's just not that hard to hit an open receiver.

I think it is the rule changes in the NFL that have just made it easier to play the position of QB and WR.
