Baseball barely qualifies as a sport. Don't get me wrong, it is a sport but it's laughable that someone considers it a contact sport.
Sounds like someone is still fighting back those repressed feelings from always being picked last on the playground.

Definitely not. Wonder what people think of auto racing. The whole idea is to try to avoid contact, but there is very clearly contact made and it's WAY more violent than any other sport when it happens.

Simple question which has been a point of debate between some people at work today. Do you, in your personal definition, consider baseball to be a "contact sport"?

Note that this is not a debate on the merits of baseball, whether you enjoy baseball, etc. Just a simple question - does baseball meet your definition of "contact sport"?
Yes, but barely.I think of this as different levels.

Non-contact: swimming, golf, tennis, volleyball, most track and field events; any attempt to physically impede the opponent's progress is against the rules

Limited contact: soccer, basketball, baseball; allowed to come in physical contact with opponent during run of play, but with strict limitations

Full contact: football, hockey; collisions with opponent are part of the game, rules allow for high injury risk from contact with opponent
Soccer is a contact sport...

Football and hockey are collision sports...
Wrong.
I think he's right actually. Soccer is very physical as long as you don't use your hands.

There is definately full contact in Soccer. Baseball is no where near a contact sport. ETA Basket ball if full contact as well. Have you ever boxed out on the blocks? Drove the lane into the tree's. You are very wrong here.
Soccer and basketball have contact but should not be listed in the same group as Hockey and Football.
completely agree - those two sports are more like car accidents at the professional level.
Soccer certainly is a full contact sport - my broken ribs 20+ years ago and my sons shattered tibia and fibula this past year say so.

My ribs and some guys knee arrived at the same spot at the same time. His knee was fine, my ribs hurt for the next six months any time I breathed.

My son was a goalie and was hit late by a player and had a very "Tim Krumrie, Super Bowl" experience. He now has a titanium rod and hardware down his shin bone.

As far as baseball being a contact sport - no.

Got me thinking about baseball fights though. Does anyone remember a relief pitcher that was supposed to be a real tough guy. He pitched in the late 90's/early 2000's I think. I remember reading an article on him and how no one wanted to fight him if there was a brawl going on. Cannot think of a name but would love to youtube some of his fights.

I didn't want to inject my own bias into this thread, but this whole baseball discussion stems from soccer. I dislocated my shoulder badly playing soccer on Thursday night from a hard challenge and was walking around the office in a sling all day yesterday. Two guys, staunch soccer haters, baseball lovers, started giving me #### (good-natured of course) wondering how I got hurt playing a "soft" sport like soccer. To which I replied that at least soccer is a contact sport, unlike their beloved baseball. To which they vehemently disagreed, and here we are.

Soccer is not on the same level as football or rugby or hockey or some other contact sports, but it's certainly a contact sport. Baseball, however.....

That's the one! Thanks!

The results of this poll is about as high a mandate as you can get on the FFA.

Putting up a poll asking if it gets dark outside at midnight would come in around the same numbers.

Nolan Ryan also beat up Robin Ventura pretty good.

But yeah, Farnsworth is the guy that speared the dude. He pitched a little for the Mets last year.

I thought there would be more out there on youtube? There is the one video of him slamming someone from the Reds but that was about it. I thought there were more fights than that? I wonder if it was someone else I was thinking about?
