I don't ever like it. I don't even like it when my actual employees/coworkers/subordinates call me that even though it actually fits in that context.

We should do a thread where we rank which of the following words denotes the most demeaning disrespect:

Boss
Pal
Buddy
Sport
Guy
Hoss
Chief
Champ
Kiddo

Call both my boys “buddy” often. Will also call friends “buddy” in a serious fashion. YMMV, GB Woz.

I admit that I do call my son, "bud."

Almost every day when they get home from work or school - “hey buddy, how was your day?”.

Team ambivalent. I don't care if I'm called anything. I don't care if my names are misspelled. I don't care if I get called the wrong name. Life is too short to get bothered by such trivial things. I'm not a British scholar or a decorated soldier. Just be nice and you can call me whatever.

Your subordinates call you boss?
Rarely. More like reference me as their boss.

I've also never actually called somebody a subordinate before.

Of course not. But it’s descriptive for purposes of the question. People referring to you as their boss makes a lot more sense than them calling you boss.

I see what you're saying. You're right, it's rarely a direct title.

I was visited by a home security salesman today. He asked for my name. I told him :dickeymoename:. I wanted to give the kid the benefit of the doubt. He then proceeded to call me "boss" several times over the next 5 minutes.

Update: got home tonight from work with enough time to take my son to the putting green. Within five minutes I called him buddy like five times. Had no idea I did that haha.

Absolutely not. Sounds patronizing really. I know if I'm at school and I am referring to a kid as boss, sir, bro or some kind of dude-slang it's because I am annoyed with them and being a little condescending.

Just don't call me late for dinner.

This reads like the junior greenhorn getting schooled by head counsel.

Used to work at a company where the head of sales called me buddy every time he saw me. And he knew my name (we worked together for 7-8 years). So I started calling him hoss out of contempt — and he loved it. What an idiot.

Former boss loved to be called chief, because subconsciously it made him feel like the CEO, and he desperately wanted to be the CEO. We still keep in touch even though he retired about 5 years ago, and I always call him boss now. He enjoys it.

I've brought it out a couple times strategically when I need my boss to put into the universe a policy I don't agree with. She's smart and probably picked up on it, but were both jagged edged smart asses with thick skin so even if she's picked up on it I am 100% sure she doesn't care.

It's funny sometimes the things that pop into your head when you read a thread.

Probably over 30 years ago. sitting in the stands at my small D3 school supporting our women's basketball.

Classmate having a very good game. What I believe was one her parents yells out "who is that girl's father?"

Friend of mine responds, big guy huge voice, and i still chuckle about this, "I don't know, but she calls me big daddy".

Chief is my go to.

I'm in the restaurant biz and am called chef quite often. Even by the chefs. I am not a chef. It’s a respect thing. I like it.
