Dodgeball is a tool of oppression (1 Viewer)

In dodge ball I don't remember targeting any kids other than whoever was closest. We used those big red rubber balls and accuracy was minimal at best. Maybe the smaller, weaker kids were unhappy or intimidated. I don't know. At 10 years old I didn't have that level of understanding.

I imagine there were other kids who were equally unhappy during a spelling bee or at a school dance or in music class, etc. They're just not presenting academic papers.

Hopefully everyone has recovered.

10-year-old boy charged with assault following dodgeball game at school

A 10-year-old from Canton, Michigan has been charged with aggravated assault after injuring another student during a schoolyard dodgeball game.

The boy's mother, Cameishi Triplett Lindley, said that on April 30, her son Bryce was suspended from Erikkson Elementary School "for throwing a ball back at a student during recess, while playing a game called TIPS/ DODGEBALL," she wrote on Facebook.

Lindley said the ball Bryce threw allegedly resulted in the other student having a concussion. "After meeting with the Principal about why Bryce was suspended while the other students who fully participated in this game were not, the Principal disclosed that the injured student has a pre-existing condition," Lindley wrote.

She was told the student had chronic brain stem infliction. "Clearly, this student should not have been playing a physical contact sport," she wrote. A few months after her son's suspension, Lindely learned that her son was being charged with aggravated assault in the 3rd Circuit Juvenile Court in Detroit, Michigan.

Cameishi Triplett Lindley started a fundraiser to help pay for legal expenses after her 10-year-old son was charged with assault.

"I'm just as shocked as those of you reading our story," Lindley wrote in the Facebook post, which was a fundraiser to help them with legal expenses. "Nonetheless, I am asking for your assistance in securing a Lawyer for Bryce. He is scheduled to appear next week in court on 8/1. The Attorney fees are $4,000. Thank each of you for your help and prayers."

According to a police report filled after the incident, Bryce intentionally threw the ball at the boy's face.

"He sustained facial issue damage to his face. He had a black eye and a bruised nose," a parent at the school told local station WXYZ-TV.

The mother of the boy who was hit with the ball told WXYZ-TV she sought legal action because this was not the first time her son has been targeted. She said she reported a prior incident to the school in in mid-April.

"My son was hit twice in the face with a ball previously due to this. The child apologized to my son and my son said 'Mom, it's OK, we're still going to be friends,'" the mother, who remained anonymous, told the station. However, the incident on April 29th was the final straw, she said. She was worried for her child's safety.

Lindley said she was not aware of any of the previous incidents and is sorry the other child got hurt. She said she wishes problems like this could be solved in the classroom — not the courtroom.

CBS News has reached out to Lindley and the school for more information.

We used to play dodgeball with basketballs. Taking a basketball to the face at point blank range stung pretty good.

I was no athlete, just a halfa** soccer, football, and baseball "player" with no real skill level at any.  But I was pretty good at dodgeball due to moderate (?) speed and I guess knowing how to hide behind others when needed.  👍   Still, I remember thinking that I didn't quite get the point.  And there were always some people who seemed legitimately scared of the game.  Looking back now it seems kind of silly - sort of like fraternities from college.

Is it still a thing?

We had a coach who once used the basketball sidelines as the line you couldn't cross.  So 95% of the floor (i.e. the entire basketball court) was anything goes -- both teams could be in that space -- and there were maybe five feet of "safe" space on either side of the court.  Everything was at point-blank range.

Oh yeah.  It was seniors vs 8th graders.

He'd probably go to prison today.

thankfully charges were dropped

I played sports throughout HS and some into college, mainly football & track, as did all my fiends so we were considered the "jocks" of the school I guess. Hands down, the best dodgeball player in our school was Barry, the biggest head in the school. He was probably 6'1", skinny as a rail because he just took drugs all day long and he was long & lean. When that ####er wound up the ball was coming at you at super sonic speed. I saw him knock a few guys off their feet and not at point blank range. He was something to watch on the court, not sure what ever happened to ole Barry.

The US with a nice comeback against Canada on The Ocho right now.

I think FBGs could field a competitive team.

Down 12-2 at half, the US completes the comeback and wins 16-14 in overtime. The nation rejoices.

Post game interview with international dodgeball official was something like the end of this.

I think I may have seen this. Didn't Mel Gibson end up winning because he chose the chainsaw?
