Does Rodgers leave GB after 2009? (1 Viewer)

Despite Favre's statements that talk of his return is "rumor", there's some very competant sources (Peter King) who say that 100% Favre wants to play again and that the GB Brass are desperately trying to convince him not to.

Check out his article at SI.com. One very interesting idea that King throws out there as to why Thompson doesnt want Favre to come back is that King believes that if GB allows Favre to come back this year, that Rogers will flat out refuse to resign w/ GB when his contract expires after 2009.

I can totally understand Rodgers' frustrations, but does he really walk away from a young team on the rise out of spite?

If this nonsense is true, I would just cut Favre if he promised to stay out of NFC North.

They could try toget a 2 year commitment from Favre and trade Rodgers now...

He might. He's had to go through a lot of bull#### already. Normally a first rounder gets a chance to get on the field if he does well in practice and preseason. Aaron annually gets to hope that Brett retires and Brett strings the whole Packers organization along. I think Rodgers would leave just to leave the ghost of Brett behind.

NewsFlash: Favre isn't returning to Green Bay
i agree ... i think some are making Thompson's decision tougher than it actually is. Granted, some fans are going to hate him for cutting ties w/ their long time hero. But the reality is that GB has a very good replacement in Rogers and Thompson's decision isn't that tough at all.I think Thompson is overly worried about the PR nightmare and he shouldn't be. This happens every few years and fans are used to it by now. It sounds like Favre wants to play ... cut the ties and let Favre play elsewhere. If Thompson is dumb enough to let Favre come back to GB, he deserves to lose Rogers to another team after 2009.

I really don't see a way this can play out other than them releasing him and hoping for the best. If he presses the issue.

But I think the odds of him playing for GB this way (vs. waiting until Rodgers gets hurt or fails and then announcing) are pretty much nil. And he must know that.

Is this actually coming from anywhere but a slow news desk? It's gotten so loud and consistent I'm even starting to question whether there might be a scrap of validity to it.

Which team outside of the NFC north would be a good fit in terms of offense and coaching staff? Tampa?

I believe Aaron Rodgers will be a restricted free agent after the 2009 season, so he won't go anywhere without some sort of compensation.

Remember how sad it was to watch Joe Montana fade away with the Chiefs? Looks like we have to go through it again. Some team with little talent at QB will sign him for a couple of years just to draw in fans, but all the while knowing that they will be wasted uncompetitive years for the franchise.

Montana led the Chiefs to the playoffs in both 1993 and 1994. KC reached the AFC Championship Game in 1993.

Good point...so he is not exactly going to be able to just "walk away". Until he shows something this season if he starts/stays healthy I doubt he will have teams beating down his door.

Joe clearly wasn't the same player, and had a bit of fumble problem during his final season, but he still lead KC to an AFC title game in '93, and a playoff berth in '94. His QB Rating over his two years in KC was also among the games best. It may have been sad for 49ers fans, just as watching Michael Jordan play for the Wizards was sad for Chicago fans, but both guys proved they could still hang with some of the world's greatest athletes. Favre showed he could still QB at a fairly high level last season, and if the Vikings/Bears defense is playing at an elite level, Brett Favre could be exactly ehat the doctor ordered. This wouldn't make the Packers or the Packers fan base happy, but if the Packers want to move forward with Rodgers(a wise decision, imo), just show the old man some respect and let him do what he wants.

No but what he's doing is combining what others have said. Rodgers is like Steve Young. He's waited and waited and it's his time. I'd offer Favre the back up role or trade. Let him be the one to make the decision.Brett you retired. Aaron has worked hard for 3 years, we have altered the offense to suit him. Taking the job away now would be cruel.Cutting him would be about a $12 million salary cap hit. Trade him to Atlanta to mentor Ryan for a 6th round pick. Let him retire where he started.Montana beat the Niners. He didn't fade away anymore than any other athlete that plays too long. He was no Joe Namath sitting crippled on the bench. Brett's body is still in good shape.

 OK, now I'm probably one of the most optimistic guys on staff when it comes to Rodgers chances this year, but the analogy to Steve Young fails on a LOT of levels IMHO.1) Steve Young went to the USFL out of college and started immediately (he's still collecting $1mm per year per his $40mm deal he signed back then)

2) He was a miserable 3-16 as a starter in Tampa Bay in two seasons

3) He then sat behind Joe Montana for four more seasons

There are a TON of young QBs who sat behind a proven veteran for a few years before getting their shot, citing one of the league's all-time greats as a comparable seems a bit misleading IMHO.

where do you get that? I don't know for sure but I doubt his entire salary would count against the cap if he was cut. Favre as a backup to rogers that would be a trainwreck I would love to watch and no way does he get traded to a team like atlanta imo...
