Does your work have an internal chat client? Thoughts? (1 Viewer)

My work has more or less a Teams implementation for calls and things.  Baked into that is teams messages which are different than SMS/Email.

Curious what others feel about this.

Pros:

Fewer emails, texts, calls

Cons:

Seems to enable people to ping you more often at wider times of day for more topics.

We're full in on M$ Teams.  It's fine.  Like it better than Skype, as with Teams we can edit files in a chat or share files.  Teams also works well for video meetings with decent sized numbers.

Use it all the time.

For me is like the move from calling to texting that happened like a decade ago or whenever texting became things people outside of kids did to communicate. Handle easy quick stuff in there. Leads to calls occasionally to discuss further.

Email sent out for summaries or official stuff where the answer needs visibility.

Just have to take a sec to make sure I am chatting in the right thread if I'm #### talking or making a joke.

We use Slack. I think its pretty good - convenient. But as for how it compares to Teams - no real idea.

Thanks. What platform is it?

We have migrated to teams for conf calls but still using Skype for chat (will be phased out)

regardless if the platform I like being able to message people for things I need a quick answer on

I guess I wonder what the feel is about using it, to me it feels like I am answering more minor questions more often and it contributes to more ADD, and keeps me looking at my phone more.  I get it that when quick answers are needed (or memes) it helps.

On the whole I also think it contributes to a little work/life balance as you can monitor the chat as things are going while doing other crap.

Team TEAMS as well. Revolutionized how we do business during COVID. We implemented right before COVID really took hold so timing was perfect.

Only thing I don't really care for is once it's there, it's there forever. Can't delete anything.

Love it and think it definitely allows work in my environment to get done easier. Covid made this happen.

Also where everyone makes jokes and BS’s when not all in the office.

I preferred Teams over Skype or Slack for work.  It's nice but always think about who you add to a string and how much you want them to see.  I started deleting a lot of group chats just to minimize any accident that the wrong person could end up seeing.

Have used both. IMO Teams flat out sucks in comparison to Slack. The whole reason Teams exists is because MS had to compete with Slack.

Slack guy here. Love it.  Not an MS fan in general. Have never used the Teams chat but I loathe it when others invite me to a Teams call vs. Zoom, Meets, Jitsi, or just about any other variant.  I'm 100% Chrome or Android OS on all my devices and Teams always seems to glitch or be a pain to use.

I must be in the dark ages.  People text or e-mail me and usually I call them back.  I don't want to type up a 5 minute response when I can give a one minute verbal answer.  It really does take time if you don't want things mis-construed.  Last thing I want is another platform to have to respond to.  Of course I type at 30 wpm and text even slower.  We also aren't an international company.  On the flip side, I have killer customer relationships and my "people" all quit my former company and joined me in a start up so I consider it time well spent.

MS Teams here for chatting with my team both just text-based and then the occasional video call.  Sharing of files, etc., too.

The company-wide bi-weekly meeting, however, is conducted on Zoom.  They were having issues getting a large number of folks connected on Teams video.

I have Teams on my phone and will occasionally message a co-worker when I'm not at my desk or off-hours sometimes, too.

Solid 8/10 in terms of functionality.

We also use slack, in addition to internal email, HIPAA compliant text messaging, communication via EMR and personal pagers. I'd prefer things be consolidated.

I am a developer (well, lead now, but still code related), which is Slack's "sweet spot", so definitely a Slack fanboi here. I've been one of the main drivers in 2 different orgs for adopting Slack now and then converting to the paid version where I work now. I've tried a number of others, my wife has to use Teams and its just ok. Not really a good competitor yet (no doubt that they will compete in $$ because of the Microsoft name however).

For work, except for a couple holdouts (effectively the CEO and 1 or 2 other older ones who have a hard time adopting the new platform) we conduct the vast majority of our communications on Slack. As developers, we use the Slack audio huddles (think Discord) quite often for quick screen shares and discussions where voice is quicker. One of the interesting things I'm seeing is people having a legacy Slack org for folks that leave an organization to keep in touch (as opposed to just exchanging phone numbers for texting).

I can get into more detail or answer specific questions if folks want but I'll just say I'm a big proponent and fan of Slack right now.

Agree. All these apps dilute the quality of communication, and facilitate nuisance messaging. While they certainly can be helpful to interact in large groups, actual conversation is often sacrificed.

Teams has a solid collection of gifs and emojis.    Makes interacting with people so much more bearable.

hmm, we use Teams as well and chat messages purge (maybe they're archived somewhere, but i can't see them anymore) after, i think, 60 days.

We use MS Teams. Much prefer it for brief discussions or "where can I find this?" types of questions as opposed to email chain overload.

Yes.  How long the messages are kept is up to the discretion of whomever is administering Teams.  Ours used to be 7 days, but people complained so it was upped to 30 days I think.

We use Teams. Works very well. Has replaced our in person monthly meetings nicely in the new environment where most of our office works from home. Use both the chat and call features.

You can delete a message you sent and your company can implement an archived/purge date.  I think ours is 6 months.

Never used slack but we use Azure, O365 and Teams - so the whole Msft ecosystem.  I think all the built in integration with PowerBI, PowerAutomate and the like is a huge bonus.  I get ticketing/change request automated approvals in Teams and it’s great.

You do have to set some boundaries:

- Like email, don’t respond immediately to ever Teams chat - block time to reply

- Go on DND when you need to concentrate - set your message

- I try to always include “no rush getting back to me” so folks don’t feel obligated to reply immediately

Overall Teams is great - my biggest complaint is I’m a fairly fast typist and sometimes it will lag just a little or not keep up when jumping between teams, chats, different chats.

We use to use Skype for IM's, WebEx for meetings.

We switched meetings to Zoom, kept Skype. Skype was easy for IMs and people were responsive.

We recently switched to Slack for IM, still have Zoom for meeting. Hate it for a few reasons.1) We cannot cut and paste from Zoom chat. Hopefully this will be fixed soon because it is a HUGE detriment since I am a developer and we often send URLs or huge ID fields via chat. 2) For whatever reason, 90% of the people I work with have notifications turned off for Slack. I'm 99% sure this happened because none of them knew how to selectively turn off notifications and, rather than take 5 min to learn, they all just found it easier to turn them off completely. Now when I need something and IM people, it is not unusual for me to wait HOURS for a response when it used to take 5 min with Skype. I often have to text them and say "please look at your **** Slack notifications."

I wish we'd go to a package like Teams. That is what our vendors use and it seems to work well when they set up team meetings with us.

I have been on teams for a while at two different employers.  I have used jabber, Skype, and whatever it was called before that.

My only annoyance is it is now a 3rd form of communication.  I will have some people email me, some text, and some contact me through teams.  I prefer email for anything with an attachment.

Overall I like it, and it's naturally going to be what most companies use being Ms.  Teams has made working from home during a pandemic seamless for many.   Their stock has been killing it, and I don't see any slowing down.

I'm literally a member of like 15 teams channels. Nothing drives more  crazy than people posting attachments and posting in sub channels and wondering why no one is getting back to them

39 Teams - that is a big downside.  You’ve inspired me to get people to clean things up.

I will say it has stopped texting me for anything, and some people quit emailing me altogether.

We use Pidgin to communicate through the office.  It works very similar to how AOL IM used to or yahoo messenger.   Free.

Not a M$ fan here, but we run Teams and it works well.

I do like the Rail for project tracking and management, as well as the sharepoint file storage integration.

I push folks away from using it as a messenger to ping me, as I like to keep all touches on one platform (email) for simplicity whenever possible. I'll usually just not reply unless it's critical.

For meetings, it works very well. The mobile app on iOS is very good as well. Have taken MANY meetings away from my desk with just my phone and a pair of AirPods Pro.
