Dogs are freaking AWESOME. (2 Viewers)

for about the last 3 weeks or so our dog is up my ### constantly. if i'm home alone, she's sitting right in front of me. staring at me. she may walk away after quite a while.. go nap or something. then when my wife & kids come home she's all over me again. trying to nose me, nip at me, nuzzling me, bringing me her bones ..... and barking. which she did extremely rarely up until about a month ago.

i can't move without her being at my feet. for a dog lover this is probably heaven. not so much for me.

what i'm wondering is what could this sudden change possibly signal? she was more or less just a regular dog before the last month. i walk her, feed her, play with her.. no one else does. but she has not been this needy in the 2+ years we've had her. not this bad. it's like a stalker girlfriend that you can't shake.
Anything change in the house/routine recently?

have also heard that could be triggered by a health issue

It's probably something like jealously towards your wife and kids, but you never know, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go get her a physical at your vet. Dogs tell you things in the damnedest ways.

Yeah my first thought was illness. Dogs instinctually try and hide injury and illness for fear of losing their spot in the pack. In a family environment that might mean seeking for time or attention with the pack leader, which I assume is you.

Here's my current "dogs are awesome" story.

We recently starting using Shipt (probably local service, but you can order groceries or Target online, and someone does the shopping and brings the stuff to your door).  We get deliveries every weekend now.  Our dog is great, but will be all over someone bringing food to the door, so we put her in her kennel when we see them pull up until they leave.  Her usual routine is to jump on the back of the couch and bark when she sees a car pull in the driveway.  Well, after a month or two of getting deliveries every weekend, whenever she sees a car in the driveway, she now goes into her kennel.  It's awesome, because we don't hear it, and she is not the type of dog that just goes into her keneel for a nap.  So, now we know whenever there is someone at the house before they even get out of the car.

dogs are awesome - what kind of dog?

mine or hers :oldunsure:

guess it's off to the vet we go.  she does have a bad habit of eating things that aren't bolted down. though that had slowed considerably in the last year or so. wonder if she ate something awful and it's causing her problems :hot:

Dog sense is really kind of freaky.  I work from home a lot these days so I get to see it more.  My kids are both in H.S. and the routine is that when they get home my daughter takes him for a walk, then before bed my son takes him for a walk.  Anyway, the H.S. bus is the last to come so there are other buses coming at different times in the afternoon.  Somehow he always knows when it is their bus that passes and he gets all amp'd up and excited because he knows they are going to be walking in the door and he'll get to go for his walk.  How does he know their bus?  It isn't even like it stops by our house.

Yeah, they’re super smart. I work from home too. They can tell from my voice intonation when I’m ending a phone call.  It doesn’t have to be me saying “bye” or “I’ll talk to you soon.”  I could say, “let me chat with ______ and get back to you” or “Thanks for double checking, let me make sure my flight for next week is in order” and they know every single time I’m wrapping up to go downstairs. It’s crazy.  They can also tell when I’m going to grab a sandwich vs going to take them on a walk.

it really is. My GF gets home earlier then i do and usually the dogs react to the garage door opening but she says about half the time they get excited before I open it

I remember seeing a documentary years ago that said dogs are able to hear differences in car motors and know when it's their owner's vehicle coming down the street as opposed to some random car - maybe it's something like that.

I bet he's just looking at the clock and knows what time they come home. Really not that impressive.

My beagle is a rescue we've had for 3 years.  He is a beagle thru and thru.  I do the cooking.  Lately, we've been having salads for dinner with chicken.  I cut the chicken and salad on a wooden cutting board.  No matter where he is, when he hears me on the cutting board, he magically appears next to me, looking for chicken (which he gets).

Jumping back in.  We had two older (14 and 17) border collies put down last year for health reasons, so we were down to just one dog, an Aussie Cattle dog (the one in my avatar picture).

Just got back from pound with ~8 week old mix breed puppy, though they think mostly boarder collie.  She's mostly black, with some white paws, chest, a bit on her face and the tip of her tail - and fluffy!  Still without a forever name, so we're working on that.  Might not get much sleep this weekend.

Congrats on the new addition, and good luck with the pup.

I don't think I could ever start that young.  I don't think i have that patience.  I've adopted two dogs in my time.  The first we were told was 3, but ended up being more like 7.  The second was around a year old.  The second one was/is a much better experience, but I don't think I could do a puppy and have a job at the same time.

Current dog (Cattle Mix) is 10, got her about 8 years ago.  She's been great, but is a bit hyper - comes with the breed.  We're not totally able to have her off leash, she'll bolt after just about anything.

The most recent border collie we put down he rescued as a senior rescue - 12 or so when we got him.  He was already set in his ways.

The one before that my wife has had since a puppy, and he was literally the best dog ever.  Too smart for his own good sometimes.

This situation kinda fell into our laps - I know the director of the local shelter, known her for years.  She knew we put two down last year and let us know they were getting a shipment of puppies up from Tennessee (they get a lot of dogs from that area).  The time of year is the best for puppy training (so I'm not outside in the middle of the night in the snow), we just made a "family planning" decision in the family two weeks ago so I was home watching all the march madness games getting rather intimate with a bag of frozen peas, and we got a clean bill of health from a third doctor on our 3 year old (human) child just today.  Everything kinda fell together to give it a shot with one this young and be in it for the long haul.

We're not totally sure what she is, definitely a mix.  They think she's got some shepard in her or similar, but she's all black and white.  Sweet as can be.  Seeing if I can turn her into a mountain bike trail dog. Fingers crossed.

We have our 11ish year old Weim and then we rescued a puppy back in the fall. She’s probably a year old now. I take them for walks every day and as it’s gotten warmer, they like to roll in the shade. It’s added a lot of time waiting for them to act like morons. I think they know when people are watching too because when a car is driving by, they both flop to the ground like they’ve been shot and start hamming it up. I love them.

Update, we named her Rixey.  Great puppy so far.  Even did the doggie DNA bit, which had some surprising results.  She's 25% lab, 12% each of German and Australian Shepard, and then the other 50% in "herding group" - likely why she looks like a border collie.

I let my dogs out in the backyard today.

Side note: my yard right now is like a Disney movie.  Rabbits, squirrels, Chipmunks, birds, Deer right along the backside of the fence, etc...

I start messing around and in comes my boy with a rabbit in his mouth.  It’s kicking around a bit so I tell him to drop it.  He does. That was a mistake.  It’s at this point I realize that Thumper has been eviscerated.  With his last 10 breaths he starts kicking around on the floor while his intestines spill out and he starts ####ting rabbit pellets everywhere. After about 5 seconds and a few feet travelled, he starts staring at me, breathes a couple more times, and finally dies.

It looked like a Saw movie was filmed in my living room.

Adopted a 3 year old dog a couple of weeks ago and she’s great during the day but we’ve been creating her at night (woman who fostered her before us also created her) and she whines incessantly for like an hour. Don’t really just want to let her roam yet; anyone try a vibrating collar or anything?

Treats when she goes in the crate?  It took our pup a while to get used to it, but eventually, with plenty of positive reinforcement, they get it.  Might take longer for an adult dog, not sure.

Is there a blanket over the crate? If not, cover it on at least 3 sides (we have an open cage and keep a blanket over everything but the door so the dogs have a "cave" where they feel safe.

We no longer crate our dog at night.  She was crated for a couple of years.  She did it but didn't love it.  When we went upstairs to get ready for bed, she'd go willingly, but if we weren't quick to tell her to kennel, she'd go under the bed.  For a short while we fought with her to get her out from under there but quickly gave up.  That's her cave she enjoys.  She never comes out until one of us gets up in the morning.

There isn’t- I kind of thought that would be worse for her but I’ll maybe try this. Daughter got up to pee at 4 am and dog proceeded to whine for another 20 minutes 🤬

She is crying for attention, and probably because her crate is not cozy enough.  Do not give her water right before bed time so she won’t need to go potty in the middle of the night.
Might also be the change in surroundings and she isn't sure your place is "home" yet.

you hit it with a lawn mower, just to be safe?

Guy's I probably know the answer to this but I really don't want to do it.  I have 4 dogs 3 shi tzus and a bloodhound.  My oldest shi tzu is 14 years old.  Last month we found out he had testicular cancer(my fault because like an idiot I never had him neutered)we had him neutered the doc said it might help but that he was an old dog so there could be other complications.  Gator now is barely eating and doesn't lift his leg when he goes he squats now.  Yesterday he fell over while peeing.  He doesn't seem to be in pain but it is very hard to tell with dogs sometimes.  I am afraid to take him to the vet because of what I know he is going to say.  Is it inhumane of me to let him pass at home or should I take him to the vet.  I like ti think of myself as a real man but I just break down crying when I think about it.  I have had to do it before but it just about killed me then and my wife I don't even want to think what it is going to do to her.  Thanks guys.

Based on what you've described....  no, I wouldn't say it's inhumane.  I'd probably let him pass at home if I couldn't tell if he was otherwise still enjoying life.

We just put our 14 yr old Boston Terrier down this week.  It sucks to do it, but he could hardly see, so he was having a hard time getting around especially when it was dark.  He wasn't near as spunky the last 3 weeks as he has been all his life.  He was starting to have accidents in the house especially at night because he was having a hard time seeing outside in the dark.  The last straw was he went to the bathroom a couple times in our bed during the night so we knew it was time.  It still SUCKS!!  I would like to get another one, but the wife says no more dogs because she doesn't want to go through that again.

My dog is home alone a fair amount during the day when I'm at work. So I decided to get him a kitten yesterday.

He has always liked cats, so we will see how this goes. Very slowly introducing them.

i mentioned this before i think.....our final evening walk is around 7.30-8p.  the route we take brings us past a corner house with a couple that is 95.  they are usually on the porch, people stop by, etc.  well, they keep milk bones with them.  so, 1 time my guy (beagle-remember this) got a biscuit.  he had this OMG look on his face.  ever since that 1 time, every time he gets to the house, he stops and stares at the door, waiting for a treat.  the wife is now in an assisted living facility, so the husband isn’t there very often.  that doesn’t stop my guy from stopping and trying to climb the stairs for a treat.  so now i actually have to bring a biscuit on our walks.  he stops at the house, but now looks at me for a treat.  he gets it, wags his tail and trots away.  if you think people train dogs, think again.

Dogs are awesome.

The vet telling you the reason your dog has been sick and losing weight the last few weeks is likely because of cancer... Not awesome.

My poor, sweet Penny. :sadbanana:
Kind of crazy. She's made a bit of a turnaround. She lost almost 20 pounds but is now not lethargic like she was. Still has weakness in her back legs. But she just might make it.

We're thinking it actually may have been food poisoning.
