Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (4 Viewers)

Could this have anything to do with the Pouncy subpoena? Or is that a completely separate mess for the Dolphins to deal with?

My older brother has started hanging out with a former offensive lineman that played and in the NFL. I was introduced to him about 3 years ago. Within an hour it was clear that this guy was attempting to be the alpha male in every situation. He talked down to most people and tended to raise his voice if there was any disagreement. After this first meeting, I had him pegged as a bully. Not just towards me, but everyone. Each time he was at a gathering, I noticed it more and more. My wife even noticed it. Sadly, it's gotten to the point that I avoid doing things with my brother when I know this guy is going to be there.

It's hard to explain. But I think NFL players have been given too much, too early. They are idolized from a young age and often times taught they can do no wrong. Or, when they do wrong, it's covered up through boosters or coaches. If Incognito was bullying and extorting, then I think it's time for the NFL to step into the new millennium. This is unacceptable behavior in every other workplace, it should be no different in the NFL.

I know this, whatever team Martin goes to next, no one will mess with him. If Incognito gets another gig ever, which I doubt, he will be the joke of everything.

Ironic, no?
Why should Martin play again? He can sue Incognito and the Dolphins for millions, and then be set for life.

This story really is bizarre. I'm very interested to hear what the real story is once all the facts come out.

I don't really have a problem with young player hazing, but like anything, you have to draw the line somewhere. Unfortunately, most of these guys in the league aren't intelligent enough to know where that line is....

- Expecting your rookie first round pick making $3 Million bucks to pick up a dinner once or twice....fine

- Telling the un-drafted rookie special teamer to pick you up a sandwich or a cup of coffee....fine

- Having the 2nd guy do the thing you asked of the first guy....not fine

Even with the early round picks, things are different now. I could see busting your rookie QB's balls and having him buy some lobsters back when rookie QB's were immediately the 2nd or 3rd highest paid player on the team, but that isn't the case anymore.

And yeah, when it gets to the point of intimidation, its a problem.
:goodposting:

I'm just throwing some ideas out, but maybe Martin has some form of autism.

Or a completely different line of thought could be Martin is gay. I could easily see other players harassing big time on that and how the evidence could be so compelling that the team would act so decisively.

Gee, I don't know, because maybe he loves the game. Maybe it isnt about the money for everyone, and assuming he is doing this for money is beyond the scope of whats really happening.

I hope he wants to play still.... And ends up in Indy.
Speaking only in football terms, not humanity terms...why would you want this? Are you a Houston fan? Martin was not exactly Anthony Munoz on the football field. Not to mention the *possibility* (dont kill me for being so bold as to call it a possibility) that he has mental issues.

This whole scenario is clearly going to be amplified by the NFL because they can look good and it takes away from the Concussion stuff. Completely punted out of the cycle and all the NFL talking heads are going to hype this. Losing a battle to win a war.

Tannehill has to be thrilled that his offensive line has been decimated with these events, especially since it wasn't a top unit prior to this.

I think Martin is a good young player. He was forced into the LT role that is a bit over his capability, but he's a very good RT IMO. Indy needs help on the oline badly from what's can tell. I'm no Indy homer or long time fan, but I am a Luck owner in dynasty and getting him more tools to succeed is something I'd like to see.

Yup. He clearly does not love it THAT much.

I know I will get lambasted by many for saying this, and probably be told that people feel sorry for my kids, but...

The hazing that has been reported thus far does not sound all that bad to me. The $15K is bad, but not worthy of walking out on your team. The "getting up from the table" BS just sounds like guys being guys. And the recent report that Martin did the exact same thing to Nate Garner (backup guard) the prior week puts a bigger question mark on all of this. You are going to do it to someone else, and then cry when they do it to you? Really? Then tell on them? Sounds like 3rd grade.

I am not saying that the "victim" is to blame here. I am just saying that based upon what I have read, the alleged hazing does not seem to justify someone quitting on their teammates in the middle of a semi-promising season. There is probably a lot that I dont know, ranging possibly from worse hazing, mental illness, or both. Just basing this on what I have read...thats all. So hold off on calling me a bad parent for now.

ETA - That was not directed at any poster in particular - just the mentality of those getting high up on their soap boxes claiming that Martin is unquestionably right in all of this, and anyone questioning that point of view is a moronic thug.

Merrill Hoge and Herm Edwards shedding some interesting perspectives on the situation this morning on ESPN.

Herm- this happens in all 32 locker rooms. 15k is NOT shocking but it should only happen once. Head Coach should know what's happening with his team and should gather intel from strength coach, equipment managers an trainers. Part of the culture in football. Locker room is a Players home but coach needs to make sure players can work in a professional environment where they can grow s players.

Hoge - players should be policing the locker room. When he played one of the teams intimidators kept bulling a young TE. Other team members asked him to take it easy but he kept on hazing the player until the TE grabbed him by the neck and threatened him. That ended it. The fact Martin was a 2nd year player makes this strange (not a rookie).

Is Richie Incognito's Dad Blasting Jonathan Martin On Message Boards?Richie Incognito finds himself at the center of the Dolphins' and the NFL's investigation of the bullying complaints of Jonathan Martin, who left the team last week. Incognito has been suspended indefinitely, and the latest report is that Incognito left Martin texts and voicemails "that are both threatening and racially charged in nature."

Even Dolphins fans seem somewhat fed up with Incognito, who can't seem to avoid trouble off the field and is one of the league's dirtiest players on it. But on a popular Dolphins message board, Incognito has at least one strident defender—and it might be his dad.

Early this morning, a poster with the username "idrd1994" left an impassioned defense of Incognito on the FinHeaven message board. In it, he attacked both Martin and Mike Pouncey as "black brothers that do drugs on a regular basis," and asked readers to "pray [GM Jeff] Ireland and [coach Joe] Philbin die of AIDS." He blasts the team from top to bottom, claims Incognito is getting railroaded, and uses the "black people say the N-word in rap music" argument to dismiss claims that Incognito sent racial messages to Martin. He also implies that Martin has pondered suicide, and "does not belong in an NFL locker room."

The post has since been deleted, but here's a screengrab; click the magnifying glass to enlarge.

User "TheWalrus" decided to go back and look at idrd1994's post history, and found something interesting. idrd1994 "only talks about the offensive line, praises Jeff Darlington (who Richie 'trusted' to write the big feature on Richie) and constantly refers to Jason Smith, the legendary #2 overall draft pick bust of the Rams, who was taken when Incognito was there."

Then, more sleuthwork. TheWalrus found another post of idrd1994's where he talks about growing up in New Jersey and watching the Jets play at Shea Stadium. Richie Incognito was born in New Jersey, but after the Jets had already moved. Not too young to have seen the Jets play in Queens? Richie Incognito Sr., an active poster (under a different name) on Nebraska message boards when Richie Jr. played for the Huskers.

A Google search for "idrd1994" turns up a number of posts on RC car message boards, from a poster claiming to live in Arizona—where the Incognitos moved when Richie Jr. was 11. "idrd1994" is also a profile on MyLife.com, registered under one Richie Incognito, age 63, Glendale, Ariz.

idrd1994 has—at least according to what's accessible on the site—a brief but focused posting history on FinHeaven. His first few posts, beginning on Oct. 9, were all about the Miami offensive line. Then, on Nov. 2, when it emerged that the NFLPA was asked to investigate Martin's claims,

NFLPA IS NOT TOUCHING THIS WITH A TEN FOOT POLE. It will come out, Martin has tried to kill himself three previous times. The team is silent because they all know about it, from Ross on down to Ireland and Philbin. If anybody has seen the latest news the NFLPA has decided not to look into the case. Jonathan Martin has had mental issues since College, it will all come out int he wash gentleman, believe me.
On Nov. 3, after Incognito was suspended,

This is a joke, suspend an honest player for a drug addict and a player that tried to kill himself three times. Complete ****in utter BS and this team is just covering their
###. What a friggin joke. Strange only coments are from Zuckerman and not Martin himself. Irleand and Philbin should be ashamed of themselves, this is a ****in joke. Suspend a pro bowl player for a player that does not even belong in the NFL. FUKIN JOKE its all going to come out in the wash and Ireland should be ****in hung because he , philbin and everyone else knew Martin did drugs and attempted suicide three times. But hey, the regular people will never hear that right ? ****IN JOKE FOLKS, ****IN JOKE.
Late last night:

Incognito will look good in a Jets uniform beating the piss out of our defensive line in a few weeks. Watch, learn , and we will have ? Jonahtan Martin, draft bust, drug addict and on suicide watch, what a team. LMFAO.
idrd1994's full posting history is available here (registration needed). Sure, it's possible this is someone maintaining a sustained, convincing impersonation of Richie Incognito's father. But if this is actually Richie Sr., it'll save writers a lot of time asking him how he feels about bullying accusations against his son, considering Richie Jr. was bullied as a child. A 2003 ESPN profile of the then-Nebraska player recalls how Richie Jr. was teased for his weight as a child, until his father told him "you can't let them keep doing it," and the young Incognito punched out his tormentor.

Before his sophomore year, the story notes, the university sent Incognito to a Topeka behavioral clinic for anger management. "I don't think Richie is ever going to completely stop being the way he is," his mother said. Added Richie Sr.: "He just knows how to control it better."

Sources tell FOX Sports that suspended LG Richie Incognito sent text messages and left voicemails with Jonathan Martin "that are both threatening and racially charged in nature."
Incognito was not suspended indefinitely for simple bullying. These texts and voicemails will be shared with the league as both the NFL and the Dolphins investigate the incident. FOX Sports goes as far to say this is an "alleged hate crime." Martin left the team following a prank played by his fellow offensive linemen in the cafeteria last Monday. He has not yet returned. Incognito has a long history of wayward behavior both on and off the field.

This bozo's career is toast.
I'm not sticking up for Incognito but, this says a prank played by "fellow offensive linemen." I wonder if there will be any other guys that get in trouble. It doesn't sound like this is just on Icognito.

The normal hazing of taping a player to a goal post or giving him a funny hair cut is part of a rookie experience. One thing you skipped over is the hate crime aspect of this story. What if a racial slur or homophobic slur was made by Incognito to Martin in a text or email?

Not according to Tony Dungy. He just told Dan Patrick that in his first meeting at both Tampa and Indy, he told his team there will be no hazing on the team. It only happens if you allow it.

Good point. That is inexcusable.

Career Over.
Martin's? Maybe

Richie? He'd get signed tomorrow if the Phins cut him.

Hate to say it, but nobody likes a whistle-blower. Right or wrong, bullies bring less drama. Publicly everyone says, "yes, bring in the rat" but behind closed doors they say "gimme the bully"

% chance Martin ever wears a Phins uniform again?

% chance Martin ever wears an NFL uniform again?
0% on the first one.

100% on the second one. The last thing the NFL is going to do is blackball the victim bringing all this forward. It would just show how right he is about the NFL and the pervasive "locker room culture".
Yes. I'm sticking by my theory from very early in the thread that this was just a move for Martin to leave this heap of a team. He wants to play for a good organization and saw his way out. He spent 4 years at Stanford playing for a well run football team, with talented players and now is slumming it in Miami. That's got to be frustrating for anyone.

Dolphins should have nipped this in the bud and took care of this internally a long time ago. Now they have to play damage control and suspend him to save face, but clearly they knew something was going on.
I think it would be accurate to say Incognito isn't suspended for hazing (or whatever), instead he's suspended for being caught.

People spending their time blaming Martin... "He should have just slugged them", "Have tougher skin", "Just avoid them", etc. Classic victim blaming. God help your kids if they ever get bullied, hurt, abused, and they turn to you for help.

Good for Martin for standing up for himself in the great American way- through lawyers. The team ignores his pleas for help? Meet me in the courtroom. Martin can do 10x the damage here without throwing a single punch. So actually, he IS fighting back. I hope they throw the book at Incognito hard enough that his head comes clean off.
Yeah, lawyers are great.

Until they start breeding.

Seems like name calling is the least of whatever happened here.

I don't think so. Incognito is widely known as a dirty player. Very unlikeable. The fact that he's now been caught turning his nastiness onto his own teammates isn't something that other teams would want to bring into their locker rooms.

This story is so confusing. There absolutely has to be something we are not being told. Grown men simply don't bully other grown men to the point of sending weird texts and voicemails especially in the nfl.
Sure they do. In fact it seems as if they did in this very case.
I hear you, but I am thinking there is a women involved, something like that. Something beyond just singling him out and then texting and calling him. Something had to happen for it to start.
It's also possible (and well established) that incognito is an Ahole and maybe Martin didn't push back and stand up for himself so he was an easy target.
I thought this kind of stuff was done by teenagers, not grown men. Weird...
a lot of grown men still act like teenagers, especially in an environment like that....they don't need to grow up....probably a big reason why most are bankrupt, divorced, drug/alcohol dependent within a 2 years of leaving the game....they don't have to deal with reality while in the NFL and when they are done and living in the real world, the vast majority can't handle it.

Completely agree. He is a good RT but doesn't have all the tools for LT. Even then, he wasn't an issue as much as Clabo was on the right.

Tony Dungy is good for football because he coaches and acts with a moral conscience. But he is NOT representative of the rest of the league. So when he says this type of behavior doesn't happen elsewhere in the league I tend to not believe him.

I use to run in the same crowd as Incognito in high school at Mountain Ridge. He's no stranger to steroids and coke and was always known as a TOTAL nut case constantly picking fights and beat his girlfriend up pretty bad our junior year. He's really a liability to any squad he's on you never know when he'll snap

Yea I don't want to misrepresent what he said. He wasn't claiming that it doesn't happen - just that it doesn't have to happen. And didn't happen on the teams for which he was a head coach.

The normal hazing of taping a player to a goal post or giving him a funny hair cut is part of a rookie experience. One thing you skipped over is the hate crime aspect of this story. What if a racial slur or homophobic slur was made by Incognito to Martin in a text or email?
Good point. That is inexcusable.
Then if you agree with that then every thing you said in your rant was useless. Because thats what this is about the hatred from bullying and some of that is surfacing as we speak.

No wonder he chose to leave over subjecting himself to hate, love the game or not. He dealt with it for two years, that shows love of the game to me. If I was dealing with racism and hatred at work for two years, I would get up and leave too, no man (or woman) at any level has to subject himself to that.

A competent coaching staff would've nipped this in the bud early, but Philbin has always seemed like an aloof milquetoast to me anyways...
This is the issue.

Philbin should be fired just for being the HC to let this get out of hand. How can you let him lead young men?

Complete ****in utter BS and this team is just covering their ###.

That family should be sterilized.

I have to say, this is the only story where I've ever seen Michael Irvan and Deion Sanders shocked into silence on the weekly wrap-up show. They just stared at each other with that "remember the time the rookies had to pay for all the hookers" look.

Some recent tweets from Armando...

Incognito is going to get representation. He will fight the misconduct allegations. He will not go quietly and THAT will be interesting.

Let's just say Incognito knows where many bones are buried.

*******

Sounds like this could get very interesting, and very disturbing for Dolphins fans.
i smell a complete scorched earth policy and he'll indicate that the coaches, other teammates, etc. knew and were in on it. I'm sure he's likely right to an extent as I doubt that this was a surprise to anyone...they just didn't think that Martin would leave the team over it, that it would take on a life of it's own and reach this level. Now everyone is in complete damage control mode and throwing anyone under the bus that they can.

So Miami has a terrible OL this year, the LG and the LT which is where Martin and Incognito started until last week. Now we know partly why that line sucks because the LG and the LT did not get along. Incognito ironically was the leader in the locker room, he was on the leadership council...this just gets better and better :(

Incognito will never wear a Phins jersey again, Martin will never wear a Dolphins jersey again either. Martin can never face that locker room again.

"I'd try to cheer him up," said Richie Sr., who is now a custom pool builder in Arizona. "I'd tell him, 'Payback is going to come, Richie. When it's time for you to have your payback, you open up the gates of hell and make them stare at the devil.'
:oldunsure:

See, this is exactly like what many posters were suggesting Martin should have done. A perfect example of how this mindset doesn't solve anything.
