So, I will just summarize my many responses to this thread:
1) Social/emotional bullying is as, if not more, harmful than physical bullying. This has been shown time and again in the research literature on bullying
2) Lots of (implicit/explicit) condoning of bullying in this thread. Lots of victim blaming as well. Some really disgusting examples.
3) Resorting to physical violence should never be seen as the appropriate response to being bullied. No one should be put in the position that they need to expose themselves to harming or being harmed just because they are the victim of bullying. Unfortunately, because of people not recognizing #1 and because of #2, people who are bullied often feel they have no recourse but to resort to fighting back -- at which point they often face consequences (e.g., physical assault charge, being suspended/expelled from school, etc.)
4) Martin was being bullied by a GROUP of large guys with thug connections -- #3 doesn't sound so hot in that context, does it?
5) The comment about preferring the bully to the "rat" and the whole discourse around viewing whistleblowers as "rats" is just a disgusting commentary on the state of society.
6) +1 to the comments that being "a man" doesn't have to equate to pounding your chest and punching people.
