Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (1 Viewer)

Wake me up when somebody that plays (or has played) in the NFL comes forward and sticks up for Martin.

Herm EdwardsSpent 10 years as a player and eight years as a coach

In the 20 years I've coached, a situation like this has never happened. This would never happen on my watch because ground rules would be established. It should never get to the point where the coach has to step in. The veteran players in the locker room need to make sure this is not tolerated. It's not hard to get information from people like the trainer or equipment managers to figure out what's going on because they hear the conversations in the locker room. If anything arises, or someone is being bullied, it affects the entire team. Someone has to communicate these concerns to the coach.

Coaches can't control who wins or loses, but they can control the environment in the workplace.

A lot of internet tough guys in this thread. Lol
Lot of "tough guys" on the networks last night as well in the form of current and former NFL players... only they are tough guys. Not a lot of mad love for Richie, but NOBODY sticking up for Martin either... quite the opposite as a matter of fact.

Interesting how being a wussie is the "cool thing"... I see the "oh, another internet tough guy" crap thrown around in the Shark Pool a lot... guess what, some people are tougher than others, this is fact. So while it might be extremely cool to be a delicate little flower that always preaches turn the other cheek, let's not lose sight of the fact that some dude's don't care, and they will hit you anyway.

Not singling you out by the way Idizzle, just a general reaction to the "it's bad to be tough" theme that floats about. Nobody knows who is behind the keyboard... we all hide behind fake names in a phony football world.. I have no doubt that there are guys typing a way on here that would not think twice about stomping the living crap out of somebody before trying to reason with them.
I understand what you are saying. This is the thing I have a hard time understanding: Why is settling things with physical confrontation more preferable than settling things without it? Why can't someone just bully someone back in a realm they feel more comfortable in? Like a courtroom? Maybe Martin can't fight. Then what? Is he doomed to be ####ed with by Incognito until he quits the league? Is that how it should work? Why can't he just win another way? What would you think about Martin if he shot Incognito? He can't fight, so he's just trying to even it up, you know. Now I know that everyone here that supports Martin slugging Incognito are actual tough guys, although I find it weird that the people I hear in real life the people that talk about fighting or settling things man to man, and "wussification of 'merica" tend to not be the tough guys, but I'm sure it's different on the internet.
-1) Why is settling things with physical confrontation more preferable than settling things without it?

Because football is a violent game that calls for full speed collisions and sacrificing your future health for the love of the game… this alone calls for a mindset that 99% of the public never have to deal with.

-2) Why can't someone just bully someone back in a realm they feel more comfortable in… Like a courtroom?

What?

-3) Maybe Martin can't fight. Then what?

Then he is doomed to fail as an NFL lineman. Oh wait, he has.

-4) Is he doomed to be ####ed with by Incognito until he quits the league?

Not if he taps into and embraces his inner nastiness… otherwise, yes.

-5) Is that how it should work?

Yes

-6) Why can't he just win another way?

See item #1

-7) What would you think about Martin if he shot Incognito?

I wouldn't care. In all honesty, these guys are just names in the news to me. People die all the time and there are not enough hours in the day to mourn all of them. Not trying to come off cold and heartless, but the reality is deaths are reported in the news every morning before I leave for work... and I don't reflect on any of them for one moment because I have no personal connection to them.
So you think every NFL lineman is a great fighter? I bet Steve Smith could kick half of their asses. People are all wired differently. Just because someone is 320 lbs doesn't mean that he has the mental capability to lay a beating on someone. You can just tell by video clips you see of Incognito that he has that 'sicko' mental condition that would make him a beast in a fight. That's not size-related, although his size obviously makes him more dangerous. Maybe Incognito would finish top ten in an NFL MMA tournament. But he's not top 100 in best NFL lineman. So your analogy that Martin can't be a good lineman because he isn't a fighter, is moronic.
So far in the battle of the avatar axes, JuniorNB is a cut above.

Most players are going to at least privately have the opinion that Martin handled this terribly and while Incognito may have gone above and beyond in being a d'bag, they'd side with him if they were being honest. There may be a few exceptions but any player publicly backing Martin would be doing so solely for the purpose of protecting their own image. Going forward i think Martin is going to have trouble where ever he goes where as Incognito will be fine. The only people who have a problem with Incognito are the media and "fans" who've never played the game and even those people really don't have a problem they just like to share their pretend opinions because they want to come off a certain way. The amount of attention this has gotten shows how far we've fallen as a society. People pretend to want blood and then once this simmers down it'll be on to the next thing to fake complain about.
This is where I think some of you are way off base. Wrong is wrong, no matter the context. Sometimes it takes a person refusing to sit in the back of the bus to wake people up and take notice.
You don't really care about this. You just want everyone to know you're a principled person. Everyone behind the scenes directly involved with this is doing a forehead slap and saying "c'mon, martin". But because of the media and people like you we have to have commence with a charade that involves press conferences and people losing their livelihoods. You'll get your blood and then on to the next. Maybe something like the Price is Right giving 5% less good prizes to Latino contestants? That's wrong!!! You will pay Drew Carey!!

Wait, what? Because I believe regardless of circumstance that all people should be treated fairly, I am looking for blood?

I could turn this on you as well. You think that you can excuse away improper behavior as long as it's taken in the context of "sport" or "frat boys, being frat boys"

Larry Fitzgerald, despite MoP mishearing (benefit of the doubt) and RBM's mischaracterization of the issue, quite clearly stated there is no place for what Incognito did. This was during an interview yesterday on Colin Cowherd. The link has been provided.

See, you want a massive over-correction because one guy acted like a d'bag. You're the person who reads about the freshman who drinks a whole bottle of vodka and dies at a frat party and then demands the university outlaw parties. You don't even go to college!

We have these national events where the media hyper-focuses and everyone not involved wants the people involved to pay. So what happens is a massive overreaction where lives are ruined and then everyone can look into the mirror, smile and say "I'm a good person because I believe regardless of circumstance that all people should be treated fairly." Congratulations on that. You've truly made a difference. Now football players will have to treat each other a little bit better and the world is better for it. Soon, the world will be perfect as long as we address situations like this.

I think this last statement pretty much sums it up. Nothing more I could say that could make you look any worse. Have a nice day.

I think a lot of grasping at straws here - given how little we actually know about the situation.

1. I think the racial threats seem tenuous, at best. If you really think someone is going to #####-slap your mother, or rip open your head, and #### down your neck, then you report those threats immediately - not 7 months later.

2. Its possible that Martin was given "the treatment" from the OL in Miami - after all, they did apparently stand up a walk away from him when he sat down with them at the lunch table. Scary stuff.

3. The "bullying" at the workplace, may not have risen to the level where anyone else on the team, players or coaches were concerned. I think a lot of people are assuming it must have been pretty bad for Martin to walk away - but maybe he is just hypersensitive, and the shenanigans at the workplace were not outrageous - expect the getting up and walking away from lunch - that is patently offensive. So, its possible, there was nothing for the coaches to see or react to. I certainly have not seen any Dolphin player step up and say they thought Martin was being bullied.

4. Richie Incognito certainly comes across as being an ###. But I don't see his teammates turning on him the way the Eagles players turned on Cooper. That suggests to me, that while uncouth, Incognito is probably not as bad, and did not have mal-intent when leaving the voicemail (or the texts that I have not yet seen). Using the n-word, in and of itself is not racist. I get the sense from the TMZ video that Incognito may use that term a lot without intending it in a negative manner. I don't know - but those who know him better than me, seem to shrug their shoulders here.

5. Martin had a lot of options available to him between fighting Incognito, and documenting a lawsuit. If his goal was simply to get rid of a hostile work environment, it seems that he would have been better served to bring these issues up, a long time ago. And allow someone in authority to address the situation. Maybe he did that - but I have not seen anything to suggest he did. It looks more like a situation, where Martin did not want to play anymore, but still wanted to get paid.

We'll see what facts still come out, and who draws what conclusions - but it seems too early in the story to start writing an ending here.

These are the people that bemoan civilization while living under its protection. It's like a hipster luddite saying "technology sucks" while playing angry birds on his iPhone.

Can't talk now, gotta run to the store to get fresh batteries for the dog collar. I'm gonna get my Son mentally and physically in shape to be an NFL player. If I'm lucky, I will get to push down an old lady on my way into the store.

Soon, the world will be perfect as long as we address situations like this.

What is a perfect outcome?
I'm asking you.
Let me clarify: define perfect outcome...
Good Lord. I'll rephrase. What's the preferable outcome for you?
For you to study the various logical fallacies in depth and perhaps take a course or two in critical thinking skills. A JUCO course would suffice.

A lot of internet tough guys in this thread. Lol
I don't get this. Why is this the recurring label for anyone that takes the "Martin should've handled it better" side?Really makes no sense.
RBM, the people that say Martin should have handled it better don't give specifics, and should they do they are outlandish like "bust him in the mouf". What was your suggestion again?
I think I put it in here about 5-6 times now. If he's not the type to stick up for himself and confront Incognito, which is fine, at least make some attempts to discuss with coaches, GM, and maybe some sympathetic veteran teammates (if he could find any) before running home to mommy and daddy lawyer and set off this ridiculous circus.
How do you know he didn't do this?
Don't you think we'd know all about it if he had?

Not all of us. Just the ones that read the article reporting Martin met with Philbin about his workplace environment in the spring.

link? I'd like to read what Martin told Philbin in the spring. And then I'd like to see a timeline of the events by Incognito and any other teammates that Martin contends created a hostile work environment.

So........from what ive seen this morning it seems

1. Incognito was given instructions to toughen Martin up after he skipped Aprils voluntary OTAs.

2. Incognito was probably "allowed" to use the n word as a part of a brotherhood around his circle of black friends in the locker room.

3. The voicemail is becoming more and more lame in this context.

4 While not right imo, a lot of guys are coming out and saying they spent 10 grand plus their rookie year on benefits for veterans.

5. While they wont say it on tv, im willing to bet the majority of nfl players would rather have Incognito in their locker room tomorrow than Martin.

6. I trust the opinions of guys playing in the NFL right now over retired guys on tv shows. They'll say whatever is pc right now to keep their jobs.

I'm not absolving Incognito, i think he's on the psycho end of things and took things way too far but i also don't think he's the devil that has been portrayed the last few days.

A whole lot of opinion thrown in there.

Where did you hear the black players allowed him to use the n-word?

The voicemail being lame and and you being 'willing to bet' players would want a doosh like Incognito around are nothing but your tainted opinion.

There was a TMZ video of him greeting Pouncey at the bar using the N word.

The lunch-room prank that apparently sent Martin over the edge involved the offensive linemen, who would stand up and leave the table after the last one arrived with his food, leaving that person by himself. Multiple team sources characterized the prank as being fairly ordinary among the O-linemen. In fact, one source said Martin was part of the same prank when some players played it on guard Nate Garner one week earlier. Another source said Martin's O-line mates weren't aware of his previous problems or that he'd met with Philbin, which led those players to believe nothing was wrong.
Internally, Dolphins officials wondered if the Bryant McKinnie trade two weeks ago -- done largely because of Martin's struggles at left tackle and the team's overall problems up front -- was responsible for Martin's issue bubbling up again last week. But according to a team source and a source close to the player, it was communicated to the Dolphins that Martin wasn't angry or dispirited over the deal.

In the video, we can see Incognito acting nutty and saying the N bomb in the direction of Pouncey, who is there and having a good time with him. They are close friends. It's clear that Pouncey is cool with Incognito using the word. That of course doesn't mean that Martin is cool with it, it also doesn't mean that the word should be used at all, and it doesn't mean the rest of the VM means nothing. People don't get that it doesn't matter how Incognito meant it, he needs to know his audience.

Chris Carter was on saying that white guys in locker rooms he's been in were allowed to use the n word among their black friends in close circles, was on First Take. Incognito and Pouncey were close, you really think this was the first time Incognito dropped the n bomb among the circle of o linemen? As far as Igcognito over Martin in the locker room, we will find out.

Almost everyone on ESPN has the exact same opinion. The opinion that is the most PC and coddles the majority of their viewership. Few are looking to rock the boat on an issue like this. Has Tom Jackson ever been on the minority side of any issue?

I don't think so. He still has to weather the storm, as he put it, but I don't think this incident keeps him out of the league for good. He was a pro-bowler last season - I have no idea where he ranks among NFL guards this year.

Even a thug like Ray Lewis spoke out against Incognito. I have heard very few people defend the guy. He was already one of the league's most hated players.

I disagree especially if its proven that he was told to toughen Martin up. Nothing he did will sour future teammates.

A whole lot of opinion thrown in there.

Where did you hear the black players allowed him to use the n-word?

The voicemail being lame and and you being 'willing to bet' players would want a doosh like Incognito around are nothing but your tainted opinion.
Incognito is done. He won't play again.
I don't think so. He still has to weather the storm, as he put it, but I don't think this incident keeps him out of the league for good. He was a pro-bowler last season - I have no idea where he ranks among NFL guards this year.
From Pro Football Focus a few weeks ago:

21. Miami Dolphins: -7.0

Stud: The ultra-aggressive Richie Incognito (+7.0) has been especially impressive with his pass protection work.

Why don't you think the retired guys have more freedom to say what they want because their football career is over? Tom Jackson isn't getting fired anytime soon.
Almost everyone on ESPN has the exact same opinion. The opinion that is the most PC and coddles the majority of their viewership. Few are looking to rock the boat on an issue like this. Has Tom Jackson ever been on the minority side of any issue?
I don't know how this answers my question.

Even a thug like Ray Lewis spoke out against Incognito. I have heard very few people defend the guy. He was already one of the league's most hated players.

He's a cancer and a known assh***. I think he signed his retirement papers with this whole Martin thing. Not many teams looking for average journeyman lineman wanting to poop in teammates' mouths.
