Dolphins Game cancelled.... (1 Viewer)

[Alright, but if the game was played on sunday Miss Cleo told me Gordon would have 120 yds and 2 TD's. Now that it might be tuesday it could be only 30 yds and no TD's. :loco:
Oh, but if that's the case, Miss Cleo its' got nothing on our local Haitian soothsayer; Icee Lefuture; he feels if the game is played on Tuesday after the Steelers live thru a real live Hurricane, they'll be so stressed out that Gordon could run for 300 yards and catch for another 150 before they even realize the game had started...Have no fear, Lefuture's here... ;)

Hurricane Jeanne forced the postponement of Sunday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins -- but only by several hours.

ESPN's Hank Goldberg reports that teams now are scheduled to play at 8:30 p.m. Sunday rather than at 1.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1888519
Now the question is will this game be televised nationally in any way Sunday night or will they just allow ESPN to do some cut-ins during the Bucs-Raiders game?

According to ESPN, Sunday night is also not out of the question as a reschedule date:ESPN Story
I saw your link, but without a timestamp, I can't tell which website is more current. Haven't yet seen a reschedule time on NFL.com (sportsline.com). Can anyone confirm the reschedule time for this game?

So far, I haven't found any other sources confirming that the game will be played at 8:30 Sunday so I do not believe this is 100% official yet.

Game will be played Sunday night 8:30 est according to ESPN's Bottom Line.
I sure hope so. My receiving corps of: Hines, Chris C., & Randy M in my big $$$ league has me worrying a bit.

In my opinion(and I live in Tampa area not east coast), there is absolutely no chance of them playing Sunday night, unless the storm takes a dramatic turn north over the next several hours.Even if it won't hit Miami directly, it will still cause enough damage, power outages, etc., to make it very difficult to get staff in place. Not only that but all police will be prowling the streets to keep looters at bay.My guess is Tuesday.

Sunday Night decision seems nuts. They should go for Monday.Either way, here comes the DirecTV Sunday Ticket debacle again. My prediction is that the NFL and DirecTV are determined to make this game available to the sizable number of Steeler fans across the nation who subscribe to the Ticket. Obviously, as the Titans-Dolphins showed us, they couldn't do that if they played the game Saturday (which to me was clearly the most logical decision). Thus, we have a game now slated for Sunday Night in the wake of a major hurricane. But, since it's on Sunday, my prediction is that it will be available on the Ticket.

ESPN is backing off their previous report. Check it out:ESPN's Hank Goldberg reports that playing at 8:30 p.m. ET rather than at 1 is being considered. An alternative is Monday night, but the NFL prefers Sunday night

I have been scouring the net for the last hour and came to the same conclusion....the game has been officially cancelled, but not officially rescheduled.

Either way, here comes the DirecTV Sunday Ticket debacle again.
I don't know about that - as I recall, the "official" word last week was that the Ticket had the right to Sunday games - not just the Sunday games between 1 and 6 ET. But, maybe I'm wrong on thatThat said, I imagine ESPN would thorow a hissy fit if the game were televised nationally. It'll be the same thing - broadcast locally if sold out and in Pitt., but this time it'll be on the ticket sincew it is being broadcast on a Sunday. If the game is Tuesday, I suppose there's a better chance of national coverage, but the Ticket i sunlikely to have it.

Well, it seems to me from the latest reports on the Local Miami channels that the "Officially" re-scheduling of this game was more of an agreement between the "Phins" and the league, perhaps without taking into consideration the local Authorities' position on the subject...There seem to be a lot of skepticism among the people in Government worrying about the safety of its' citizens that this game is going to be played tomorrow night...Personally, I don't foresee this game being played Sunday night...It would require a monumental effort from local authorities to provide support to this game so quickly in the wake of a major storm...I think the NFL may have to back off...

I used to work for DirecTV (in customer service), so I guess I have a little bit of "inside info". DirecTV makes no guarantee about showing EVERY game. They only claim to show UP TO 11 out-of-market games per week (with Sunday night, Monday night, and the 3 national Sunday broadcasts making up the balance). Nothing in the verbiage, though, stipulates that you will be able to see every game.

Spoke to my buddy at the dolphins. Sunday maybe, but Monday is a possibility. The game WILL be played.

A big concern I have is if it is Sunday at 8:30, how far gone will the storm be? Everybody is talking about the need to start Ward and Chambers, but aren't they concerned about the weather affecting the passing game? High wind and rain spells concerns for Ward and Chambers.

This makes a lot of sense. I also swear I heard a little bit of re-writing in the latest local DirecTV ad I heard on the radio, in which they used to say "every NFL game" changed to "nearly every NFL game". Sounds like they are making sure to cover their bases now.

Sunday night may not be firm yet. ESPN has revised their story:

ESPN.com news services

MIAMI -- Hurricane Jeanne has forced the postponement of Sunday afternoon's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins, but it could be by only several hours.

ESPN's Hank Goldberg reports that playing at 8:30 p.m. ET rather than at 1 is being considered. An alternative is Monday night, but the NFL prefers Sunday night.

On ESPN Radio's College Gameday, Dolphins receiver Chris Chambers said the game likely will be played Sunday night.

"They say we're gonna play it tomorrow night. Hopefully that can happen," Chambers said. "The big problem is (if) anybody is going to be able to work the game. That's the biggest problem we have, will there be damage, do we have to use the emergency personel outside the stadium, that is the biggest thing they worry about."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1888519

I must be missing something really basic about why DTV couldn't show this game...can someone explain? Obviously, they have the ability to pull games that are only shown in local markets (they did it in preseason) and they certainly are not lacking for channels to broadcast on...Unless their contracts are written so that they are not allowed to show games at any times other than 1pm and 4pm EST on Sundays? If they do not show the game, believe I'll be #####ing at DTV (whether any of you think it helps or not). If enough people ##### they will certainly consider working clauses into future contracts for exception cases like this.

I just heard on the Weather Channel the game will be played at 8:30 tomorrow night. The storm will make landfall around midnight in the west palm beach / cape canaveral area. The hurricane should certainly be gone by tomorrow afternoon from anywhere near the Miami area. I don't know if the Weather Channel has been misinformed about the game but that is what they just reported.

I think the plan is to go forward for Sunday night IF the storm is as predicted. The biggest effect is on the northeast quadrant from the eye, and on that basis, Miami should escape the brunt of the storm, since it will be making landfall further north. However, they are keeping their options open at this time.

The ticker on ESPN news was reporting the game being played at 8.30 as of about an hour ago, that was well after the link posted here which seemed to back off from that a bit.

Pahnder, what are you hearing about Rothlisberger? Is he going to develop any chemistry with Plaxico?

Latest info on game:"MIAMI DOLPHINS UPDATE lNFL RELEASES LATEST PLAN FOR DOLPHINS-STEELERS GAME... .Written By Senior NFL Analyst Bob Harris | Posted Saturday September 25, 2004 @ 16:48 PT According to the Associated Press, the Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers and league officials have now agreed to move the starting time from 10:00 pacific time to 17:30 pacific time (20:30 eastern time) because Hurricane Jeanne was expected to bring significant wind and rain to South Florida late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. But the Dolphins said the game time could change again."We all intend to reassess the situation following the aftermath of the storm in the morning and make a final decision at that point," team president Eddie Jones said Saturday. "Our first consideration will be public safety issues resulting from the storm, and that concern will be the priority in determining whether the game can be played [sunday] night."I'll continue to update as developments warrant."

Pahnder, what are you hearing about Rothlisberger? Is he going to develop any chemistry with Plaxico?
Jeez, I dunno. :-(I own Plax in nearly every league I'm in...So as musch as I'd like for that to be the case, I think not. I would think that for the short term Plax will not see much at all -- for a few reasons:

1. Hines -- duh, he's almost always open on short routes and he catches anything that comes within 70 feet of him

2. Randle El -- for whatever reason, Roeth and Randle El seem to have very good chemistry together already. It showed in the preseason and it showed last week too...after seeing two catches in almost 7 quarters of play this year from Maddox, ARE saw two catches from Ben (including a TD) a little more than a quarter. I'm thinking ARE may not be a bad pickup in PPR leagues. Just a hunch, though.

3. Duce. It would make sense for Staley to become an emercency outlet for Ben on little swing passes and screens if Ben doesn't like his other options.

Long term, I think Ben will hlep PLax's numbers, as I think he can throw a much better accurate long ball than Maddox can, but I'm guessing that will be the last of the chemistry to develop out of the other three listed above. Remains to be seen. As it stands, Plax will be warming my bench until he shows he deserves not to.

The bigger question that this raises for Plax is what happens with his contract? If he puts up a crappy year of 45 / 700 / 5 or something like that, will people still be knocking on his door with offers this offseason? I've been thinking all along that he woul dnot be a Steeler next year. I was hoping that he would just be lights out this year, we could use a transitional tag on him (maybe even a franchise tag?) and then get some good compensation when he left...but since he's stinking this year I have no clue what will happen now.

Question....we heard about this all week, WHY wasn't it rescheduled for today like the T1T-ans game? Sounds like someone dropped the ball,.....................
I'm going to go ahead and guess that they couldn't throw an NFL game on a few hours notice and expect the fans to know or show up.

I'm sure ESPN has a deal with the NFL that no other game can be shown during the Sunday Night telecast, and since I had previous conversations with DTV it has become apparent that the NFL runs Sunday Ticket, not DTV. So, when it becomes official that this game will only be seen locally, spare yourself the calls and e-mails to DTV, they will tell you it is NFL call, not theirs, and they are right. It's all about advertising folks, you know $$$$$.

Don't you know that accessibility = $$$?Besides how happy can the NFL be that ESPN2 is showing Angels-A's opposite the Raiders-Bucs?

I agree that, at this point, it is not in the NFL's best interest to have a regular season game that you can't see if you want to pay the $$$.Heck, I would PPV it. The Steelers (and fantasy football) is why I got the ticket in the first place.

Pahnder, what are you hearing about Rothlisberger? Is he going to develop any chemistry with Plaxico?
Let's look at what the big guy did in the third and fourth:
Code:
BY QUARTER: 3rd Quarter 4th Quarter/OT | Targ Rec YD TD | Targ Rec YD TDBurress, P | 2 1 21 0 | 1 0 0 0Haynes, V | 1 1 2 0 | 2 1 4 0Mays, L | 0 0 0 0 | 2 1 8 0RandleEl, A | 1 0 0 0 | 4 3 29 1Riemersma, J | 0 0 0 0 | 0 0 0 0Staley, D | 0 0 0 0 | 2 1 9 0Ward, H | 1 0 0 0 | 4 4 103 1
He seems a bit more comfortable with RandleEl and Ward. RandleEl I can understand. He most likely worked with him the most. But Ward can be a security blanket for just about anyone. IMO, Ward gets the bulk of the looks on short yardage plays this week.

Everybody is talking about the need to start Ward and Chambers, but aren't they concerned about the weather affecting the passing game? High wind and rain spells concerns for Ward and Chambers.
Not only that but the last time extreme weather hit the area the entire team as a whole played like a train wreck. I can't help but wonder if a home team distracted by safety/property damage concerns all week for themselves and local friends and relatives are at a disadvantage in a situation like this. The road team just rolls out of the hotel at a different time and knows it's getting on the plane after the game and going home regardless what the weather does.

Miami Herald reporting game will be available on the Ticket. DirecTV Channel 713 seems to indicate so as well.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/9759961.htm

I had a strong feeling this would be the case, and might be why the NFL is rushing to get the game on Sunday - to allow Sunday Ticket to show it. It's one thing to black out a team like Tennessee who has a limited national following - and quite another to deny Steeler Nation the chance to see Big Ben make his debut start.

So true. I know my brother-in-law got the ticket 'bout ten years ago to watch his beloved Steelers. Plus there's added interest in his town in the game...he only lives 'bout ten miles away from Miami University where Big Ben went to college.

The community is gonna come first. Whether the NFL helps or not is not a debate for here, now. The people whom lost their homes will need a "makeshift " safehouse or shelter to go to. Is there enough food available? Electricity needs to be up, phones etc. There is certain essentials that will take place before the game even enters the Floridian folks' minds.Funny how folks mention all this about DirectTV and ESPN meanwhile they may or may not even have the capability of transmitting the game. THAT will cost the NFL millions and cynics will say is the real reason for the delay.I heard one report last week(may have just been a radio guy talking) about them playing in Atlanta, Carolina, or New Orleans. Why didn't they do this and avoid these issues? One stadium is somewhat new and the others held the Olympics or the Supe not so long ago. Probably wouldn't be that hard to handle an extra game.In many many NFL cities, the stadium is a disaster relief center(lack of correct term) where folks can go to find shelter. It isn't in Miami?I wouldn't wanna be a rook making his first start with a wet ball and your receivers running in mud. That said, football's not exactly a sunny afternoon nice weather game like baseball. I don't think vets will have a prob with this. They'll find a way to get open and make tackles and such.I don't know Florida's geography. Where's Tampa and Jax in all of this? Are their stadiums affected? Or are they inland enough or behind hills and building that the storms will break up enough before it hits them? How far is it if the teams wanted to go play there? Has anyone heard this mentioned as a possibility?

Just heard an "NFL report" on The Weather Channel (didn't know they had those!!) which said that Miami-Dade is open, and the warnings and watches have been lifted. Have not heard how much rain soaked the Miami area but it now sounds like that would be the only consideration for that game.

Went a different route.Called Miami Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald.Neither had any probs deliverring papers in Miami-Dade County. Both said they seem to be waiting for the highways(causeways?) to be openned before officially declaring the game is on for tonight but that's just a matter of time.Gotta run, can't update anymore. That's good enough for me, feel free to call for yourself. Phone #s listed at sites

This brings to light another possible obstacle, at least one Tampa would have.MacDill AFB uses Raymond James Stadium as it's "Disaster Command Post". This was one of the reasons the USF game was cancelled on Labor Day vs. Pitt. Not sure about Pro Player and the military, but haven't heard any mention...BTW, I am watching Jeanne out my window as I type from Tampa. It is weakening, but still pretty frightening what kind of power these things can have.
