Leslie Frazier

Shortly after coach Cam Cameron was fired Thursday morning, the Dolphins received permission to interview Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier for the team's head coaching vacancy.

Although Miami has not yet scheduled a date and time for the interview, Frazier said Thursday the team told him he would receive another call either Thursday night or Friday morning to finalize plans.

He expected the meeting to take place with general manager Jeff Ireland, vice president of football operations Bill Parcells and owner Wayne Huizenga.

''I'm just looking forward to sitting down and talking to Bill and Jeff and the owner to get a feel what they're looking for in a head coach,'' Frazier told The Miami Herald.

Frazier, 48, is an interesting choice as one of the initial candidates, mostly because he has no ties to Parcells or Ireland. He also currently runs a Tampa 2 defensive system in Minnesota, which is different than the system run by Parcells and Ireland in Dallas.

During his introductory news conference Thursday morning, Ireland said the decision to fire Cameron was based on a lack of familiarity and a lack of philosophical compatibility.

However, Frazier said he has a versatile defensive background, one that originated in a more pressure-oriented system as a player and a coach. He noted that he actually didn't begin learning the Tampa 2 until he joined Colts coach Tony Dungy's staff in 2005.

``No question, a pressure-oriented system is what I came from,''Frazier said. ``You'd really have to evaluate the personnel down there before any of those types of decisions would be made as far as the defense is concerned.''

Before working as a defensive backs coach for Dungy, Frazier was defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. He initially entered the NFL coaching ranks under Eagles coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia as a defensive backs coach in 1999.

Because of his recent familiarity with the Tampa 2, which he began learning in 2005, Frazier was hired away from Indianapolis in February to replace former Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, who left for the head-coaching job in Pittsburgh.

Frazier was also a major force as a defensive back for the 1985 Bears defense, which remains one of the greatest defensive units of all time. His playing career was cut short because of a knee injury during that season's Super Bowl.

It is not yet known how many candidates the Dolphins plan to interview, but the team is steering toward keeping that number around five. Frazier said his agent had been contacted by one other team about a head-coaching vacancy, but he did not want to say which team that was.

Interviewing Frazier also will keep the team in good standing with the NFL's Rooney Rule, designed to encourage teams to interview minority candidates.

For now, although Frazier doesn't have any ties to Parcells or Ireland, he said he's simply excited about the opportunity.

''I don't really have a tie [to Parcells or Ireland],'' Frazier said.``I was just glad they called.''

Rex Ryan a candidate?

The Dolphins have been given permission to interview Rex Ryan, the former defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, for the vacant head coaching spot, but the meeting hasn't been scheduled.

Ryan, who was an integral cog in the Ravens' No. 1-ranked defense in 2006, was fired earlier this week along with Baltimore coach Brian Billick. Ryan was the defensive line coach during the Ravens' Super Bowl championship season of 2000.
:loco: Who did they need to get permission from? His wife? He's unemployed!

It would sure be nice to get some stability as far as our defensive coordinators go. Seems every year or every other year for about the last 10 we get a new one...

Definitely WON'T BE Cowher as he already mentioned he's sitting out coaching for at least another year plus why would a veteran coach like him want to go to a young and very untalented team like that? When and if Cowher returns to the coaching ranks he would take over an under-achieving team. When Billick got canned from Baltimore I thought that would probably be a good fit for him even though the O is pathetic.

I would think Sparano is the favorite and Carthon is the dark horse. I don't see the others as having much of a chance. Personally I would go with Rex Ryan.

Parcells: "No coaches being interviewed today"

The media is not allowed to roam the Dolphins facility so some of us have taken over a patch of swale across the road from the Dolphins training facility that allows print reporters to see who is coming and going while photographers shoot into the team's garage.

Well, just a few minutes ago, Bill Parcells left the team's facility. But on his way down the road, he pulled up alongside the media contingent, rolled down his window and said, "Hey guys, there will be no coaches interviewed today."

A couple of the photographers, surprised by the gesture, asked for a clarification and Parcells said: "I wouldn't lie to you. You can go home. There will be no interviews today."

Alrightie then.

If that is TRUE it means Parcells is pretty cool to let us know. If that turns out to be a LIE, that would be a huge disappointment because, frankly, having covered this team for years, I've grown kind of weary of being told things like, "I will not be the Alabama coach."

Anyway, there's your up to the second scoop.

Actually, Billick always insisted that his assistants get rolling two year deals. Ryan may have been fired but he's still being paid by the Ravens unless/until he finds a job for next season.

Rotoworld:

Bill Parcells has called the Cowboys for permission to interview offensive line coach Tony Sparano for the Dolphins head "coaching position.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed the request from Parcells on his weekly radio show. Sparano, who has connections to Parcells and new Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland, has emerged as the favorite to fill the vacancy following Cam Cameron's firing."

it really does seem like all the other candidates are fluff for the interview process. these guys have obviously spoken and they're just running through the motions formally. i'd be shocked if Sparano isn't hired.

Frazier 'happy' with Dolphins interview

BY ARMANDO SALGUERO

asalguero@MiamiHerald.com

Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, the first minority candidate to interview for the Dolphins coaching job, emerged from his meetings Tuesday convinced he had done well and will get a fair opportunity to be hired.

''I think I did very well,'' Frazier told The Miami Herald. ``You have to talk to Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland to see their thoughts on that. They're the ones you should talk to, but I was happy with how I did.

``I was honest and forthright. That's all you can do in that situation. Like I said, I think I did well.''

Frazier, 48, left the Dolphins training facility to catch a flight Tuesday afternoon about the same time club general manager Jeff Ireland headed to the airport in a separate chauffeur-driven sedan to pick up Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, the third candidate to interview for Miami's coaching vacancy.

Ryan's interview is expected to extend into Wednesday.

Dallas assistant head coach Tony Sparano interviewed for the job over the weekend and, according to several sources, is considered a strong favorite to be Miami's next head coach.

Such speculation has raised eyebrows that the Dolphins are not conducting a legitimate search that would abide by the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for front office and coaching openings before a job is filled.

Frazier, who is black, came away from his interview convinced the Dolphins are operating by the rule.

''I think [the rule] was respected,'' Frazier said. ``Having myself in, and I don't know who the other candidates are, but them giving me the opportunity to sit down and talk about the job shows that they respect it. We'll just have to see what happens from there.''

Frazier, who has never interviewed for a head coaching job before, said the interview was different than past ones he has had when he has been hired as a coordinator.

''You're talking about the entire team instead of just one segment of it,'' Frazier said. ``We talked about everything. What I would bring to the table. What I thought is necessary to improve the football team.''

The Dolphins have already hired a quarterback coach in former Parcells assistant David Lee, although the team has not confirmed it. Frazier was asked by the Dolphins about potential assistants he might want should he be hired.

''It's an issue,'' Frazier said. ``There has to be people that I can work with and feel comfortable with, but that is always part of the process.''

Is this the official "we have a coach but are pretending we still need one" [nod, nod, wink, wink] thread?

More news about the coaching search

The Dolphins search for a new head coach has met its first road block.

According to a source, the Dolphins asked for and received permission to interview Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley today. But something happened on the way to Haley's head coaching interview.

The Cardinals offered their assistant a contract extension with a raise. And Haley took it. He has told the Dolphins, "Thank you, but no thank you."

Meanwhile, Rex Ryan who flew in today for his interview is already on his way out of town. That interview was interesting because, unlike the Leslie Frazier interview, it did not last two days.

Ryan was in and out.

Much as Frazier did, Ryan said he was painfully truthful with the Dolphins about their current state. "Bill [Parcells] has his hands full," Ryan said.

That statement is interesting coming from a coach on the only team the Dolphins beat in 2007.

I'm guessing Haley didn't make the trip because he knows Sparano already has the job.

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will interview with the Dolphins on Monday.

Dolphins won't get Bucs' Muir

The Dolphins have been granted permission to talk to Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz about the Dolphins' head-coaching position. He expects to interview with the Dolphins on Monday.

It'll be interesting to see if the interview comes off on that schedule. Dallas offensive line coach Tony Sparano is generally presumed to be the front-runner for the job and becomes available to take it if the Cowboys are upset Sunday by the New York Giants in their NFC divisional playoff game.

Atlanta also has received permission to speak to Schwartz, who has been a Titans assistant for nine seasons -- the past seven as defensive coordinator. Before going to the Titans, he spent 1993-98 in the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens organization as a scout and defensive assistant coach.
