Doug Gabriel, WR NE (1 Viewer)

he only played in half the game and had 6 rec, im thinking he will be a solid start from now on, whats your take ?
It absolutely depends on whether Brady keeps the rapport with him for the rest of the season. On the drive where Brady was 10/10 for 80 yards, Gabriel had 3 or 4 receptions on that drive IIRC.In any case, he's clearly absorbing the playbook faster than Jackson, which is a good sign for Brady because he'll have a good veteran presence at WR for the rest of the season (knock on wood)

He definitely looked good - he made some very nice, and difficult, catches.

I was a little surprised, however, that he failed to haul in more catches in garbage time.

Your joking....right? For those that weren't watching, he had 6 catches & 10 targets in the 4th quarter.

With a little luck, Gabriel will work his way up to WR3 on a couple of my rosters.

GB the off-season waiver wire.

It depends on what the score/situation is. If N.E. can run the ball, they will run more than in prior years and pass a lot less. They couldn't run at all against Denver and also fell behind, so they aired it out. Brady should not be throwing 55 passes a game very often.

Against the Broncos, Brady took what the coverage was giving him, which was patterns underneath which happened on that day to be Gabriel. In future games, Brady will again take what the defense is giving him. But it may or may not be Gabriel on any given week.

No, I'm not - from the play by play:
4 5:21 7 - 17 3rd-and-10 own 8 target of incomplete pass4 3:35 7 - 17 1st-and-10 own 20 target of incomplete pass4 2:35 7 - 17 1st-and-10 own 30 target of incomplete pass4 1:46 7 - 17 2nd-and-10 opp 41 caught pass for 12 yards (first down)4 1:24 7 - 17 1st-and-10 opp 29 target of incomplete pass4 1:12 7 - 17 3rd-and-10 opp 29 caught pass for 9 yards
Looks like 6 targets with 5 minutes left and only 2 catches. I recall that a couple of those incomplete passes were catchable balls. He looked GREAT on one drive - the first drive that the Pats finally got some fire under their butts:
4 12:37 0 - 17 2nd-and-13 own 17 caught pass for 18 yards (first down)4 11:53 0 - 17 2nd-and-6 own 39 caught pass for 12 yards (first down)4 10:11 0 - 17 2nd-and-3 opp 28 caught pass for 6 yards (first down)4 9:17 0 - 17 1st-and-8 opp 8 caught pass for 8 yards TOUCHDOWN

Marc's right. We're basically talking about a guy who's had one good series in three games. Still, at some point it stands to reason he's going to get a real shot. The Patriots are obviously hurting in a big way at WR and if Jackson's not ready they can't keep hoping to beat people with the Brown/Caldwell tandem all season long can they?

Can they?

As a Raider fan (yes I'm admitting it :bag: ) I've watched Gabriel's development, and I'm a big fan of his. He doesn't look like a typical speed WR, but he always seems to get open downfield, and he's never been afraid to go over the middle. He will drop some passes but he does have that playmaking ability the Patriots sorely need at WR. It won't surprise my either if he picks up the Pats offense very quickly, he's accustomed to learning new offenses after being with the Raiders the past few years.

I wasn't trying to say he's going to be a top 20 WR. I just thought he was using a little sarcasm, 'cause getting 10 targets in a quarter (which he did, acccording to NFL.com's play by play) is pretty unbelievable. If a player is getting 10 targets a game, i consider them starter material.

Bottom line is he has nowhere to go but up and the other night was truly reason for optimism. :)

I'll gladly keep someone like him on my bench while he and Brady develop together.

Did he even suit up the first two games - I thought he was inactive at least the first game. Still - it is only one series...

I think Gabriel has more skills than Caldwell. We can all agree with that right? He probably is not as reliable as Troy Brown underneath and certainly Ben Watson. However he is more NFL ready than Chad Jackson right now, no matter how high you are on Jackson.

So I think over the next few weeks we will see more and more big plays with Gabriel.

I expect him to produce about 50 yds a week and maybe sometimes more in the 75-90 range...doubt he will hit the century mark very often. Also think he will post around 4-5 more TDs from here on out.

The Pats are going to run the ball as much as possible and against teams that have weaker run defenses they will hand the ball off a lot.

Gabriel is a good WR5 or WR6 and I think he will make a decent bye week filler. I think his floor going forward is around 750 yds and 4-5 TDs...

this week they will be getting killed, so i think they will be throwing as much as last week. so look for him to have very good numbers in the 75- 100 range and maybe a score.

what is chad jacksons story anyways? people keep referencing his need to "learn the system" and what not but i thought his inactivity was more hamstring/injury related. Colston and jennings know their systems. Jackson was impressive in all the combines and had a great chance to do well..

so is it injury related or is he just "not there yet" for some other reason? just seems like the door was wide open after the Branch departure.

??I said I was surprised he didn't make more catches in garbage time, you said "you're joking, right"His only good series came BEFORE garbage time - his "10 targets" were due to heavy targeting IN garbage time - targets that went for incompletions.i'm not dissing gabriel - i own him in 2 leagues and like him a lot - I AM, however, surprised he didn't make some of the throws that went his way at the under 5 minute mark.

I think this is quite accurate. Maybe a few too many yards, but otherwise a very realistic outlook of Gabriel's value.

I'm more surprised he didn't have a pass thrown to him before the third quarter. I'm trying to remember if he was even on the field in the first half. Was he? If so, he was pretty damn invisible.

i don't recall, but i don't think so.

And that begs the question why not? It's not like Brown and Caldwell have been tearing it up. I can understand Belichick's loyalty to Brown but Caldwell? He's rather ordinary to say the least. I do like Gabriel but I'm wondering why he's not showing more than he's shown thus far. Is he not healthy (he's been limited in practice this week according to reports)? Is he not picking up the offense quickly? What's going on there because this is a prime situation for someone to step up and he has the talent in my opinion to do it.
