Anybody know if offensive minded head coaches are more likely to draft an offensive player in the first round? Are defensive minded head coaches more likely to draft a defensive player in the first round? Any stats on this?

Thanks

Not sure if they are any "stats" on this particularly, but my guess is that most coaches(really organizations) go by some combination of best player theory and needs versus their side or another. also, remember that few coaches in the league have final draft say, so the final decision is not up to them even though a coach ususally has a pretty strong voice in the room. Remember also that a coach with expertise on one side of the ball may really have locked in pretty well what he is looking for in terms of style of player, so he may know that he can find his type of player later in the draft. See ZBS in Denver and Houston with later round RBs and Olmen as an example.

Interesting question - I think you need to modify it a bit though since the HC is not always the decision maker on draft day.I do think we can distill philosophy from looking at draft pick patterns while the current regimes have been in place. A few I think are true:Tennessee - Take the best raw athletes that they think translate well and develop themNE - Very specific ideas about what players fit in their system, and a very shallow draft boardOakland - SPEEDPhilly - OL/DL have priority, don't worry about immediate contributionOther General questions include: Measurables vs. Game Tape, How important is Character/Leadership (such as putting emphasis on team captains)?, Positions teams never seem to draft too high, One Year Wonders vs Consistency.I'll try to flesh out my thoughts as the draft gets closer.

Its an interesting question. For instance, a lot of Lions fans say that their team won't draft a QB because Jim Schwartz is a defensive guy.

Mike Smith was a defensive guy coming to Atlanta, BUT, owner Arthur Blank made the call to draft Matt Ryan - hence my point about HC's not necessarily having the last say. I definitely think saying ANYTHING about a Schwartz/Mayhew regime's drafting tendencies is mere speculation, because we have no record to go on for either of them.

Tennessee - Take the best raw athletes that they think translate well and develop them

NE - Very specific ideas about what types of players fit in their system, and a very shallow draft board

Oakland - SPEED and mental instability

Philly - OL/DL have priority, don't worry about immediate contribution

Other General questions include: Measurables vs. Game Tape, How important is Character/Leadership (such as putting emphasis on team captains)?, Positions teams never seem to draft too high, One Year Wonders vs Consistency.

Fixed.

Mayhew has the final say on all personnel matters.
