I know everyone likes to say they draft for value, and dont worry about lineups. Thats fine in a dynasty startup, but to what extent can this be done in a redraft? At what point does taking a player to fill positional needs become more important than value, obviously it has to be done at some point, you cant take your 6th WR with no rB's on your roster.

At what point do you start drafting for need?

I make a list of guys I would not mind in the mid rounds if I find value in the early rounds. For RB that maybe the 6th, for WR it's usually later. Of course this would be assuming no RBs would have any value when I pick.

If AJ and Moss fall to me and then Manning fell in the 3rd and Gates fell in the 4th. Start 3 WR and someone in current ADP Boldin and above was there, I may take them in the 5th.

So In the 6th I would think you have to go after a RB like Bush/Spiller in PPR, Forsett. Then Bradshaw, Caddy in the next round and probably if anyone dropped I would pick a 3rd RB in the 8th.

It's a dynamic process. Last year I didn't draft my first RB until the first pick of the 6th round 2QB, 3WR in the first 5 rounds (2 QB league). It worked out well because I had the last pick in the 1st round and the value was at the QB/WR positions for the first 5 rounds (ended up with Ray Rice, Mendenhall, Moreno anchoring my RBs).

I think by the 6th round I felt obligated to grab a RB, but at the same time I also felt that was where the best value was for my team as well as the fact that everyone else was running on QB/WRs at that point. I had no need for another QB or WR (except as trade bait) so those positions had significantly less value to my team.

I have no idea how it will play out this year but I am pretty sure I will not lock myself into any particular position for the first 5 rounds of the draft and just take the player I consider to be the best available.
