Bye Bye Bly

Lions president Matt Millen and coach Rod Marinelli have given cornerback Dre’ Bly permission to seek a trade.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Matt and Rod allowing me the opportunity to find a home for Dre’ Bly that is more conducive to his Pro Bowl skill set,” Bly’s agent, Kennard McGuire, said Tuesday.

Lions spokesman Bill Keenist had no comment. Millen was unavailable for comment.

The Lions signed Bly as a free agent in 2003. In his first three seasons, he made two Pro Bowls and was a first alternate for another. He was elected a captain before the 2006 season, but he suffered a drop-off in performance. His three interceptions were his lowest total as a Lion.

Bly is a pure cover corner. He prefers lining up man-to-man. But after the Lions hired Marinelli last year, they installed the Tampa Two defense. Bly is now asked to play zone and stuff the run. He also has a high salary-cap figure for next season — more than $5 million.

It appears the Lions will try to get something in return for Bly so they don’t have to release him for nothing.
While I understand that Bly isn't the right fit for the Cover 2, he's been one of the few Lions in recent years who really plays well and plays hard and wants to win. Sad to see him go.

Bly is nothing more than a CB3 really, he takes way too many chancesand gets burned alot too. If the Lions can get anything for him, I'd move him

That is way off! CB3? come on!!!He may not be Champ Bailey, but he's a better cover guy than most teams have.

CB3? :banned: I'm not saying he's an All-Pro but he's a solid NFL starter. I agree that he takes chances at times, but he comes up with enough big plays to justify it.Cornerbacks are always needed...anyone know his contract status?

I think he'd fit in well with the Jets or Redskins. Both could use some veteran depth at corner, and Bly could start for either team.

Any chance the Patriots take a look at him?

What kind of cap numbers are we talking about for this guy?

2007 is the last year of Bly's contract so the Lions wouldn't take an additional cap acceleration by trading him. His salary for the year is $4.2 million. He won't be a great fit for any team that runs the Tampa 2 defense. His style of play is effective in an aggressive bump and run, man-to-man style of defense much more than in a primarily zone and run support role that a few more teams have switched to in the past few seasons.
