Driver wants to play until he's 40 (1 Viewer)

Donald Driver reportedly plans to play until he's 40 years old.

Driver turns 37 in just over two weeks. "I haven't lost a step from anyone," Driver insisted. "I think it's just about going out there and getting opportunities. ... If the Packers don't want me, I've got to go somewhere else and play. I don't have a choice. I'm not ready to hang the cleats up."

Will the Packers cut him? He would serve no purpose but to get in the way of the development of Cobb and others.

Yeah, him and Terrell Owens...

Unless he's willing to take a pay cut, I see no other choice by management to cut him to make way for the young guys that have been waiting in the wings.

That is the key issue - he can still play in the NFL, especially in a situation where he is not covered by the best db on the opposition. His hands are still spectacular and he is still fast.He is also very expensive. Plus what another poster pointed out - Gurley will be starting for the Pack next year also. Now if the Pack decide to part ways with Finley, perhaps they do want another pass catcher - the Pack kept like 4 TE this year, they could certainly keep 3 and one more WR - but Driver is too expensive for his production.

:wall:

Why do these guys insist on hanging around for far too long? Dude, you are 37, and have lost a step. That's to be expected from a man your age. That Packer offense made you look better than you are.

If he were to go somewhere else, I'm sure he'd come to that realization (or probably not). It's the athlete mentality.

Would hate to see him go, but its the business of it all.He does not offer as much to them as the other guys do at this point...unless they find a way to move someone else, but don't see TT giving up on the younger guys (Jones who was pretty invisible much of the season).

Its a bit of a tight spot for the Packers. Driver has been a Packer his entire career, holds a lot of Packer receiving records, and can still play. However, they have Jordy Nelson lining up covering kicks because their #5 WR doesn't play special teams.

The last time we saw Gurley play was the preseason, but the guy caught everything thrown his way. Gurley is more of the name guy, but Diondre Borel has a chance too.

Borel had the exact same thing happen to him that Gurley did late this season. Both got calls on the same day to join active rosters. Gurley with Minnesota and Borel with Tampa. The Packers gave both of them raises to the active roster minimum to prevent them from departing. They both chose to stay with the Packers.

Does anyone know how expensive Driver's contract is? Unless the are having salary cap issues I can see him hanging around in Green Bay. He is a fan favorite and does a lot for the community. I had also heard during the season that he was fine with being a backup role player. Assuming all that is true I could see Green Bay keeping him around as a spot player for a few years.

He looked like the best wr on the field to me on Sunday. Those proclaiming that he's through are in for a wake up call next season imo. I could easily see him putting together one or two very good seasons in another teams uniform a la LT. Straight line speed is a tool but there are several examples of HOF wr's that didn't have "blazing" speed but could still run good routes and catch everything in sight.

Roto says it is $5M in salary and bonus (assuming thats a roster bonus at a certain date).

This is the last year, and I think he's owed just under $5Mil in salary and bonuses. That's a lot of money considering they have quite a few other guys to try and lock up. I would think he'd agree to a pay cut to stay in GB and make another run, but you never know.

I agree. I mean, he's not the guy that routinely is breaking 50 yarders anymore but he seems like a very important part of the offense in moving the chains. He has great hands. He can still make 20-30 yards catches. I can see him playing on any team next year that has a decent offense and being a good fit for them. Maybe not a FF fit (that boat has likely sailed beyond anything other than a flex play when you NEED one), but in real life, I think he's still a good player.

:shrug:Can't knock the hustle! Appearantly he loves the game and is getting paid a lot to play it, probably much more than he would get paid doing anything else.

Because of the money and glory. Face it there is no other job where he can make millions with his skillset.

Reminds me of the Hines Ward situation. Maybe Driver takes a pay cut and hangs around for a couple of years as the #4/#5 option. Hines didn't stand in the way of Antonio Brown and Driver didn't stand in the way of Nelson. Sure, Emanuel Sanders and Randall Cobb may have to wait, but it's not like those guys were going to be a focal point anyway at this point.

and at the end of the season they activated Gurley from their practice squad to prevent MN from getting him. They must see something they like in Gurley.
Gurley was never activated. He was given a pay raise as incentive to stay on Green Bay's practice squad.
