DT for the Falcons, Coleman is OUT...impact on Vikes' RB (1 Viewer)

Ministry of Pain

I know, another Vikes RB thread. I linked this in the RB thread as well but I thought it deserved some extra attention. When DT go down for teams, bad things happen. When the Lions lost Rodgers last year they started to give up a lot more rushing yds. When the Bears lost Tommie Harris and Mike Brown their Safety they ended up watching the ypc on defense rise to over 4.0 a clip.

The Vikes are now primed to get a good game...will it be Taylor or ADP?

Coleman is a pass-rusher. Dont see this making much difference to ADP.
Coleman is a solid 2 way DT, and this will have a big impact because the backup has to play more snaps. It lessens the talent depth in their DT rotations. I think the Vikings will try to run a lot.

I think Coleman would have been limited anyways due to the recovery from his quadriceps injury this spring. Even prior to this latest news, I idn't see him playing but 10-15 snaps only in obvious pass rush situations.

Babineaux, who is his back-up, is actually a better run player. Look at his tackles for loss stats from last year and realize they were accumulated in a reserve role and you'll see why.

The other factor is that run-stopping DT Grady Jackson isn't 100%, so rookie 6th round pick Trey Lewis will be playing a lot:

"MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Vikings G Steve Hutchinson vs. Falcons DTs Grady Jackson and Trey Lewis. Hutchinson is a mauler who won't have any problem dealing with Jackson's size. Jackson is coming off knee surgery and is not in the best of shape so he might not play 50 percent of the snaps. Lewis is a rookie who looked good in preseason -- against second- and third-team competition."

Viks Rbs look strong tomorrow. I am really struggling who to startPortis OR AP
I am starting AP over Portis. His preseason numbers weren't eye popping, but you could just see the power and explosiveness when he runs. I think he is going to have a very nice game regardless of who the starter is in Minny. He has too much talent to be kept off the field.

BALCO

NO question he has to much talent to be kept off the field for long, perhaps game 4 or so, but I cant see him getting more than 50% of the work tomorrow. I like his match up and dont like clinton's but I wouldnt play match ups if CLinton was healthy. I can see AP scoring tomorrow for sure, not see easy to see portis in the zone, from my pov. Real tough call

Taylor should get more series, altho AD could still outpace him from the fantasy angle because AD can break the long one, and the offense might have more success and longer drives when AD is in. I see Taylor as an RB2 and AP as a great flex this week. 40 carries for the Vikes is within the realm of possibility.

How much of that do you attribute to a fresh backup coming into the game against a tired starter on the O-line?
