During the draft how do you stop? (1 Viewer)

Each year we have 3 or 4 owners ( all good friends ) that always ask for help during the draft. Someone, even me, will help them, I was wondering if anybody has the same problem and what do you do about it. Granted I don't want to piss any body off but I would like to people draft there own team.

We used to take away late round draft picks, or slide you to the end of X round. We had a couple of guys that would really get pissed at people helping others (or informing them of injuries)....then we always have a few guys that say it is not problem to help a fellow out. Now, we have no penalties, and people keep quite for the most part. (I always thought it was a little overboard to have penalties for helpers).

do what men do - rag on the guy until he stops.
:lmao: I was the one who stopped my long-time redraft league from having people call out names when others were on the clock. It usually was done as a "Look at me and my big brain and fine preparation for knowing who should go here!!!!", which pissed me off to no end.

I always bring a fake sheet with me and leave it out in the open. It might be a list of "sleeper" candidates like Ashley Lelie.

If someone asks if so and so is still injured or whatever I don't think thats a big deal, but if they are asking who they should pick thats a no no (I have never even seen that in all my years)

Agreed. Or if they are asking who a backup RB is (like, to a RB they already have). If someone tells them that, I would be ticked. If they wanted to know that, they should have taken the time to do the research.

Good topic.....I have this problem every year. My leaguemates know that I spend a lot of time on fantasy football, they know that I play in multiple leagues and as a result I get many questions throughout the draft.

-Hey Rounders, have you heard anything about player "x"

-Hey Rounders, do you know if this player is injured

-Hey Rounders, do you know who the backup RB is in Arizona

The list goes on and on.....

2 years ago I told people that I would not answer any questions at future drafts to quiet this action. Next year came about and someone said "Hey Rounders, do you know when so-so is going to be back from injury" I must have peered through his body with the look on my face, and did not respond. So he turned to another owners and said, well do you? That owner laughed and answered.

Now as a result of that conversation, the leaguemates don't ask me, they ask each other. So this year I made a comment that we should not help each other out and each owner should keep quiet when asked about players, they all laughed and said it's not a big deal, but it gets me fired up!

Suggestions for next years message?

We have some guys like that but I don't view it as a problem. Others help out some of the less informed but usually do not suggest guys they are really targeting. I see no problem. This is a league of friend that has been going for 10-15 years.

I agree with you 100%, assuming you are playing for money. If you are playing for free, then it is just for fun, and who cares, but if it is for money, the stupid and lazy should not be helped.

Oh it's a money league...$200 Entry fee, $5 per transaction, winner takes home about $1K, various other payouts. The league is made up of great group of friends that have known each other for 15+ years, but that shouldn't matter.

If you've told other guys in your league that you will not help them, and yet they persist in asking you questions... then you could just flat-out lie to them. Spite gets such a bad rap sometimes.

Usually we mock the person who asks for help. We usually don't get anyone asking for help really. However we help each other about injuries. That's fine in my book.

During the summer we have conversations about top 5 RBs etc, normal stuff. But when it comes down to draft day (tomorrow for me!) we'll have speculation about players before hand. We're like a bunch of GMs before the NFL Draft. I'll throw out some stuff like, "Hey Guys did you hear Gallery moved to guard? That line's gonna be incredibly improved. I'd draft Lamont Jordan as my #2 RB in the 2nd or 3rd if I didn't have Steven Jackson as my keeper." Hilarity insues, but the seed is planted for the "...ballet parking??" crowd in our league.

I'd agree here. I have disclosed injuries in the past to people who ask (in the alternative, I find it NOT cool to tell someone who drafts an injured player that the player is injured before the next person has picked), but don't like it when guys talk about who is backing up who when it comes time to their pick.

Just make it clear before the draft starts. I always announce any recent injuries that maybe some folks haven't heard about (within the past couple of days) and then let people know that everyone is on their own.

The commissioner asks them politely the first time around.

Usually that'll work but if it doesn't, he may have to walk over and talk to him personally and explain to him how things normally work in your league.

If it's a good league.....then owners will support this and won't enable his behavior.

If it continues even after that, then obviously this isn't a guy who should be in that type of a league.

Why would you do this? Isn't that like, 99% of preparing? Knowing a player's status?

the silence in the room right before the mockery begins is golden when this happens, anyone who wrecks that needs to be slapped

I don't have a problem with people asking anything. If they do I will steer them to a player I don't want. They want to know who is backing up Edge I will tell them JJ Arrington. I don't even know if that is true but if they take him I don't care. Last year a SF fan needed a QB and I wanted to take Cutler later. I said I needed a QB as well and asked about Alex Smith. He takes Smith and then I take Cutler (keeper league is the only reason these guys were picked). This is usually better than the suggestions my other league mates give out. Marino, Unitas, Namath and those types are usually mentioned. I feel if they ask it is better than having them prepared and knowing this stuff.

We had this exact situation with two owners the past two years. I talked to them about a basic comparison to poker. Would they allow two players at a poker table to consistently help one another? This stopped the information/helping each other cold.

I understand the argument that people should draft their own teams in a $ league, but if a guy asks for help, he's probably not going to be the best owner anyways. If somebody helps him, he'll be more competitive and probably keep donating. Isn't that a good thing in the long run? This "everyone's on your own" attitude is what makes the weak players go out and get good or quit the league. It's very shortsighted, IMO.

Our draft has 3-4 of these guys and if they are just asking for help occassionally it doesn't bother me. If they ask too often, I just ask if they want me to draft for them after they pay the entry fee.

last year it wen too far, though. The guy sitting next to me kept on sniping guys from me off of my cheatsheet. My fault for not paying attention, but whenever I would go up to the draft board for a pick - he was looking over my sheet. Didn't bust him until like the 18th round. Then it made sense why he had sniped guys like 3 or 4 rounds in a row.

I dont have a problem if owners talk quietly about certain things. The one thing I have a problem with is people saying players names that have not been drafted yet. We implemented a rule that if you mention a players name that has not been picked, you lose your next draft pick. People have shut up.

That's a low blow....I might have thrown down with the guy for that.

Oh there would of been a fight in my league if I caught him doing that crap on purpose.

Had a guy who was pissed in last year's draft that we let him draft Priest Holmes (in like the 6th or 7th round, I think). Guess he expected somebody would say something. And if so, then I guess the help you are talking about is expected in this league, at least by some participants.

BTW, the guy won the league.

Like I said, I do that for players injured within the past couple of days or so. People have lives and can't always be up to the minute on everything. Our draft is on Saturday. If I know a player got hurt on Thursday or Friday I'll bring that to people's attention. Why wouldn't I do that?

No "lie to them" option?
:lmao:The "campaign of lies" is the best fantasy-football related part of draft weekend. The lies, double-lies, fake codes on the draft cheatsheet and the patented "being honest since everyone assumes you're lying" are all awesome moves.

Move to Russia, you pinko.

 Bad-but-plausible advice is the way to go.

Exactly!!Some of you all take this way too seriously. I have been doing this for 17 years and the day that my leagues become this nazi infested rules game, is when I quit.It is supposed to be fun--plain and simple. Questions such as: "What is going on with Kevin Jones now??"Are met with Answers: "Oh, he is a mortal lock for 1,500 yards this year." "He is working at a car wash" "He died."All my leagues are money leagues BTW. Just because Fantasy Football has become a big business with all these internet sites, doesn't mean you should look at your leagues with this degree of seriousness and lack of humor.Oh well, I will get off my soap box as I am off to a draft now.
