[Dynasty] 2016 Draft Class (2 Viewers)

Rotowolrd:

USC redshirt senior QB Cody Kessler "doesn't have ideal height for an NFL quarterback (he's listed at 6-1), but will be prepared for the mechanics of running an NFL offense," observes ESPN's Kyle Bonagura.

"After a productive junior season, Kessler could have tried his luck with the NFL, but opted to return for a season in which there will be high expectations -- both for the team and Kessler individually," Bonagura wrote. The quarterback made a great decision in returning. While we like Kessler more than most, he would have been lucky to get popped on Day 2 had he entered the process early. If he can assuage concerns about his frame by showing Drew Brees-like tools in 2015, it wouldn't be out of the question for Kessler to hear his name called in Round 1. He doesn't have much room for error, however.

Christian Hackenberg - QB - Nittany Lions

Only seven offensive lines allowed more frequent sacks on passing downs than Penn State during the 2014 season, according to SB Nation's Bill Connelly.
"Only three teams allowed more run stuffs in the backfield," Connelly writes. In many ways, the school's offense was miserable last year. It starts with the offensive line (with a second round pick at left tackle), but other players failed to elevate the talent. Plenty of players who saw significant action return, but experience does not always equal improved talent.

Rotoworld:

It's reasonable to expect Mississippi State redshirt senior QB Dak Prescott to post career-best numbers in 2015, believes ESPN's Alex Scarborough.

Prescott threw for 3,449 yards on 61 percent completions with a 27/11 TD/INT ratio last year to finish eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He added 986 rush yards and 14 scores on the ground. "It's important to note that in a lot of ways he's just getting started," Scarborough wrote. "Remember last year was his first full season as a starter. The former three-star prospect had to wait behind Tyler Russell before he won the job, and even then he showed some room for improvement. With more experience and some tweaks to his game in the pocket, we could see an even better Prescott in 2015." Prescott could become the seventh quarterback in FBS history with 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards this fall.

Ole Miss junior WR Laquon Treadwell is a near lock for SEC Comeback Player of the Year and SEC Offensive Player of the Year if he remains healthy, writes ESPN's Alex Scarborough.

"There might not be a cornerback in the SEC capable of covering him," Scarborough wrote. "He's too big. He's too fast. He's got too good a set of hands. The one fair matchup might be Vernon Hargreaves III, and we'll be lucky enough to see how that plays out when Ole Miss goes to Florida on Oct. 3." The 6-foot-2, 212-pounder had 48 receptions for 632 yards and five scores last season before he broke his fibula and dislocated his ankle in November. Ole Miss HC Hugh Freeze said the receiver is already healthy.

Oklahoma State junior RB Chris Carson said he wants to rush for more than 1,000 yards and rank in the top three of the Big 12 in rushing this season.

The Pokes stole this four-star junior-college running back's commitment from Georgia days before signing day. It was an understandable change of heart: Instead of competing with a bevy of suitors for the scraps of carries Nick Chubb wasn't going to get, Carson enters a crater of an Oklahoma State RB depth chart, which suffered the defections of Desmond Roland and Tyreek Hill. Carson's only competition for the gig is Rennie Childs. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Carson was the No. 12 JUCO recruit in the country, according to ESPN. "A tall, upright runner than runs with good pad level, forward lean and vision approaching the hole," reads his scouting report. "Shows surprisingly good lateral agility to exploit cutback lanes and navigate tight creases in-line. Has the size to push the pile and lower his shoulder to fight through traffic. Top end speed is very good on a straight-line."

An anonymous SEC coach ripped former Oklahoma State and current Akron junior WR/RB Tyreek Hill.

The coach, who said he watched Hill on film run the "fastest 100-meter guy in the history of the world," decided to stop recruiting the sprinter when he came across Hill's Twitter handle. "It was repulsive," the coach said. "I wouldn't be able to say it to you. I wouldn't be able to say it a female of any sort." Hill went on to win the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year, perhaps inducing regret -- right up until he was dismissed following a felony domestic assault charge. Last season, Hill ran for 568 yards, posted 281 receiving yards and returned two kickoffs for a touchdown and one punt for a touchdown. He must sit out this season.

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler believes Clemson junior WR Mike Williams "has the talent to be one of the top receivers in college football this season."

"While still raw in some areas, most notably his route running, if I was an opposing coach in the ACC, I would be tempted to ask the officials to check Williams' hands for glue because of the acrobatic grabs he has produced on tape, showing tremendous body control and focus. He has the talent to be one of the top receivers in college football this season and a very interesting NFL prospect," Brugler wrote. The Clemson prospect had a solid season as a first-year starter, replacing Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant. Williams lead the Tigers with 1,030 receiving yards on 57 catches and six touchdowns in 2014.

So what's this class looking like compared to 2015 at this time last year? I've acquired three firsts next year and 2/3 should be projected high. This thread is great for who to watch. From comparable standpoint do we know anything yet?

Christian Hackenberg - QB - Nittany Lions

Penn State has "a chance to be favored in as many as nine or 10 games this season" and "will be a much better team in [James] Franklin's second season," according to ESPN correspondent Phil Steele.
"Last season, Penn State had a poor offensive line and was in the first season of the James Franklin era with just 12 returning starters," Steele wrote. "This season, the Nittany Lions have 15 returning starters and I think Christian Hackenberg will look like the probable high first-round pick he should be in the 2016 NFL draft." The Nittany Lions currently hold minus-160 odds at 7.5 wins. Steele strongly suggests taking the over.

Evan Engram - TE - Rebels

Mississippi junior TE Evan Engram is "the nation’s No. 1 tight end overall," writes ESPN's Edward Aschoff.

Engram caught 38 passes for 662 yards with two touchdowns in 2014. "Engram is an absolute freak of sporting nature," Aschoff wrote. "Do you see how big this creature is (a chiseled 6-foot-3, 227 pounds) and how fast he is while carrying that size? Engram can out-muscle defensive backs with his size and strength, but he can also sprint by most linebackers with his speed, which really can be considered receiver speed most of the time. That sort of athletic combination makes him extremely dangerous against any defense." In 2014, Engram averaged 73.5 per game in the SEC and had 19.6 yards per catch in those games. "Engram is one of the country’s most talented and athletic offensive players, and 2015 should be a great season for the [sEC's] best tight end," Aschoff wrote.

Hunter Henry - TE - Razorbacks

ESPN's Sam Khan argued that Arkansas junior TE Hunter Henry is the best tight end in the SEC.

It's not a popular opinion -- most side with Ole Miss' Evan Engram -- but let's hear him out. The crux of the argument is that Henry is two-dimensional (receiving and blocking) while his competition is not. "Henry has good size (6-foot-5, 250 pounds), body control and ball skills, and he’s a good route runner and a smart player," Khan wrote. "He also catches the ball when it’s timely: Henry owns the highest percentage of receptions that resulted in first downs or touchdowns among SEC tight ends over the last two seasons (minimum 20 games played). His receptions result in first downs or touchdowns 78.5 percent of the time, second in the nation in that time span." Henry runs a 4.79 40-yard dash and is graded by Walter Football as the No. 2 TE prospect overall and a Rds. 2-3 prospect.

I think Engram could be a WR in the NFL. He's got great hips and feet.

6'3", 227 isn't anything close to big for a TE. Not sure why he's saying that.

I'm going to give you guys one that nobody knows about to keep your eye on this year - Jason Vander Laan, QB, Ferris State in Michigan. Division Harlon Hill/POY winner last year as a redshirt Junior. Jason is 6'4", 240 lbs and a running/passing threat as QB. Ran for 1,466 with 20 rush tds, and threw for another 2,381 with 30 pass tds. He is an athletic kid, too.

But it isn't his size/speed as a dual threat QB that will interest NFL scouts. What people do not know is that he twice ran 4.5 40 yard dashes this Spring. These are not published times but came to me directly from his Dad. I know the family well, so his father has filled me in. So at that size and speed, with his athleticism, I would not be surprised at all if he gets converted to TE. I mean if Blake Bell of Oklahoma gets drafted in the 4th round after 16 catches and running a 4.80, Vander Laan should get drafted, too.

I think the 2015 class looked stronger a year out. Gurley, Cooper, Gordon and Yeldon were pretty obvious talents. Guys like Funchess, Abdullah, DGB, Mike Davis, Jay Ajayi, Jaelen Strong, Nelson Agholor, Duke Johnson and Devante Parker were also pretty highly regarded by many. Kevin White kind of came out of nowhere and you figure there will always be a few guys like that.

Looking ahead to 2016, there are again a few obvious talents (Elliott, Henry, Treadwell and Boyd) like last year. But I don't like the top 2 WRs as much as Cooper. I also think the next tier of guys has more question marks than last year's group did (and less upside) at the same point in time.

Overall, I think 2015 was an above average class at both RB and WR and thus an above average class overall. 2016 looks pretty average across the board to me. It should be better at TE and deeper at QB, but not quite as strong/deep at RB or WR.

I wouldn't be purposely trying to accumulate 2016 picks in expectation of an extraordinarily strong class but also wouldn't be purposely shedding picks due to a poor expected class either.

So what's this class looking like compared to 2015 at this time last year? I've acquired three firsts next year and 2/3 should be projected high. This thread is great for who to watch. From comparable standpoint do we know anything yet?
QB: 2015 better at top. 2016 deeper. Winston and Mariotta better prospects than anybody in 2016.

RB: 2015 better at top and much deeper than 2016.

WR: 2015 better at top and much deeper than 2016.

TE: 2016 better. Has to be better as this year's class is pretty average at the very top.

So, 2015 picks quite a bit more valuable than 2016 picks. A top 2 pick in 2016 will be valuable for Ezekial Elliot and Laquon Treadwell, but value starts to drop off pretty quickly after that.

2015 is noticeably better because of Gurley's AP-like upside.

If you exclude Gurley from the comparison, the 2016 top-3 (Laquon, Ezekiel, Henry) are arguably slightly better than their 2015 comparables, but with so many unknowns about each (future) rookie, the gap is practically negligible. If you are holding a top 3 pick, you will get a guy a that will be going in the first 40-45 dynasty picks.

After that, it's obviously too early to tell, but on the face of it the 2015 RB class is quite a lofty benchmark to exceed in terms of depth.

Baylor redshirt senior edge rusher Shawn Oakman received day two grades from spring scouts, according to Tony Pauline.

By spring scouts we mean scouting services, who recently concluded their spring meetings. Many teams subscribe to one of these two services for a variety of reasons. One, it produces a watch list for team area scouts, allowing them to focus on potentially draftable (or signable) talent, rather than focus on "reject" grades. Second, it is good training for younger scouts who then can be promoted to area scouts. We would not lock in on these grades as a projection as they tend to be inaccurate in nine months.

Pittsburgh junior WR Tyler Boyd's charge on DUI is expected to be formalized on Tuesday.

Jefferson Hills (Pa.) police chief Eugene Roach said the department will "file DUI and other summary offenses Tuesday against" the 20-year-old (the courts were closed Monday because of Flag Day). The additional offenses will include underage drinking and what was described as "various vehicle code violations." Boyd was pulled over Friday. He told police he took two shots shortly before getting behind the wheel. Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi said that Boyd "will be held accountable to our internal standards of discipline and behavior." Stay tuned.

Sports Illustrated's Ben Glicksman believes TCU senior WR Kolby Listenbee "could become exceedingly difficult to cover" in 2015.

"If he can start to hone some underneath routes to complement his beat-you-deep dominance—something SB Nation’s Ian Boyd broke down in extensive detail last month—Listenbee could become exceedingly difficult to cover. That’s especially true given that TCU’s offense returns senior quarterback Trevone Boykin, the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite," Glicksman wrote. The TCU prospect recorded 38 receptions for 709 yards, with three touchdowns last season for the Frogs. The Speedster tore it up during spring football and could be a big-time wide out in the Big 12 this season.

Oregon State graduate WR Richard Mullaney has announced that he will be transferring to Alabama.

On Monday, the 6-foot-3, 194-pound wideout, had a visit with the program which must have went extremely well. The former Beaver recorded 83 passes for 1,160 yards and five touchdowns during his time with Oregon State. Last season an elbow injury slowed up Mullaney, as he was forced to miss the last half of the season, posting 18 receptions for 216 yards. In 2013, Mullaney recorded 52 receptions for 788 yards and was a reliable threat in the passing game.

Michigan State senior QB Connor Cook is "the front-runner to be the first quarterback taken in the 2016 draft," according to the MMQB's Andy Staples.

Staples passes along a lot of praise for Cook, namely focusing on how the was "primarily responsible for turning around the Spartans’ offense." Cook is not afraid to test tight windows, and Tony Lippett helped convert those last season. We would include a few negatives, including Cook's tendency to fall away from throws and occasionally make terrible decisions after erratic movements when under pressure. His arm compensates fairly often, but it also gets him in to trouble. Other top quarterbacks include Cardale Jones and Christian Hackenberg.

TCU redshirt senior WR Josh Doctson "could be this season's Kevin White" if he proves "physical enough for scouts' liking" postulates NFL Media draft analyst Chad Reuter.

Not bad company, right? Doctson began his career at Wyoming, but his career has really taken off since he transferred to TCU. "He became Heisman Trophy candidate Trevone Boykin's favorite target (65 receptions, 1,018 yards, 11 TD) by finishing routes inside, turning short routes into long gains, as well as getting deep," Reuter wrote. "Once he gets down the field, he can separate using his length and speed, and shows an uncanny ability to track the ball over either shoulder." The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder was compared by CBS Sports' Dane Brugler to Jordan Matthews.

Corey Clement - RB - Badgers

Wisconsin junior RB Corey Clement "has already proved he's got the kind of feet the Badgers need to ensure that once again they don't miss a beat on the ground," according to ESPN's Austin Ward.

"When given a chance, Clement has proven he's got the burst to explode for long gains," Ward wrote. "And there's more than enough strength in his 219-pound frame to withstand the beating between the tackles -- or even dish out a little punishment to tacklers trying to take him down in one-on-one situations." The 5-foot-11, 217-pound Clement rushed for 949 yards and nine touchdowns (6.5 yards a carry) and chipped in 14 catches for 119 yards and two more scores while spelling Melvin Gordon last season. "Just wait to see what Clement might be capable of now that it's finally his turn to put on his cleats as the starter," Ward wrote.

Oregon senior TE Pharaoh Brown (leg) is a top-50 prospect based on talent, according to NFL Media draft analyst Chad Reuter.

There are other considerations, of course, and Brown unfortunately suffered a horrific injury in November against Utah which nearly resulted in a lost right leg. Despite missing five games, Brown was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection with 25 catches for 420 yards and six touchdowns. "If his rehabilitation allows him to resume his career this fall, and he regains the strider's speed and agility that made him one of the top pass-catchers in the country before the injury, expect him to be an early-round pick," Reuter wrote.
