Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said he would like to expand Michael Gallup's route tree in 2023.
ESPN's Todd Archer said McCarthy, heading the team's offense this year, plans on "adding more to Gallup's plate rather than having him exclusively play the X receiver role." Gallup spent the 2022 season getting back to form after a late-2021 ACL tear. He had two or fewer catches six times last year, and more than 49 receiving yards in a game just twice. With the lowest yards per route run of his NFL career, Gallup was a non-factor in the Dallas offense after showing flashes of dominant receiver play in 2019 and 2020. Gallup was last season was "different." "I had to work a little bit harder. I had to do some things that I've never had to do. I could normally just walk out on the field and play. Couldn't do that," he said. It's not a lock that Gallup will function as the Cowboys' WR3 behind CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks this season. He could be a savvy late-round pick in deeper formats this summer.
