Ebola (7 Viewers)

My wife does international public health work and will travel to Africa twice in the next 2 months.

How worried should I be?
What part of Africa?
Ghana and South Africa.
Currently both are in the clear but both are very concerned as the virus inches closer. She should avoid any contact with wild mammals and bush meat or the people that handle those things. Especially fruit bats they seem to be the strongest vector.

Find it curious how so many doctors are contracting it. Assume they scrub, wear masks, use latex gloves... Are they are exposed through fluids on their clothes, maybe from coughing and sneezing? It's not supposedly airborne, so it shouldn't be from breathing the air. Is this just a product of not washing or removing clothing properly?

The million dollar question for me is just how hard is this to come down with, relative to the flu? Much, much harder I suppose, to the point where the two aren't comparable. If there is something about the strain that is particularly communicable, I suppose we'll know by mid August if it spreads more widely than supposed. Average incubation is 15 days.

Sure hope we see trends consistent with it spreading only in environments that are typically conducive. If it appeared otherwise, that would be pretty scary.

How many doctors have contracted it? The guy in the OP didn't know he was dealing with Ebola. There have been a few cases over the years but when you consider the number of doctors involved it's a very small percentage overall.

Well not to ratchet the fear down but more people die everyday from diarrhea than have ever died from Ebola.

Really now? I have a tough time thinking the runs are fatal, unless over a period of several days and severe dehydration sets in.... and I openly admit I could be wrong, but ....link?

About 1.7 to 5 billion cases of diarrhea occur per year.[2][3] It is most common in developing countries were young children get diarrhea on average three times a year.[2] Worldwide, as of 2012, it is the second most common cause of deaths in children less than five (0.76 million or 11%).[2][7] Frequent episodes of diarrhea are also a common cause of malnutrition and the most common cause in those less than five years of age.[2] Other long term problems that can result include poor physical and intellectual development.[7]

Ebola patient transferred to Emory University for treatment.

A patient who was infected with the virus in Africa is expected to be treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta within several days, the university said in a statement Thursday. The patient, his or her identity undisclosed, will be treated at a special containment unit set up in collaboration with the CDC to treat people exposed to serious infectious diseases.
You know, the same CDC that had a containment breach earlier this year.

We're safe. <_<

Just coming in to post this... I'd imagine a lot of Atlanta residents are not happy about this.

Again Ebola is not suited to cause an epidemic in a first world country. We won't be sending these guys to a church to pray it away. Simple precautions prevent the spread. As long as you know what you are dealing with basic medical protocols are pretty much enough as long as they are observed. And again it takes exchange of bodily fluids to infect. If you aren't making out with, getting bled on or having sex with the patient you are good.

I understand it isn't airborne, however multiple medical professionals have now contracted this over there, gives me cause for pause.

why even take the risk?

As far as I can tell we are talking 2 people. Do you know how many doctors and nurses are working on this?

In the case of the CDC, them not following them led to the breach. But, it's OK; we're talking about the US gubmint. They NEVER screw anything up, amirite? <_<

2 less now  Seems like something went wrong with two American doctors contracting it.

You guys are acting like this is the first time Americans have gone to Africa to treat an Ebola outbreak. It isn't. This is starting to remind me of the summer of the shark. An event that isn't quite all the media is pimping it to be once it is put into context.

Yeah nothing could go wrong here.....This is one of the most stupid things the US has ever done.........Instead of putting measures in place to keep it over there and fight it...We bring it to us....Good job to whoever came up with this lamebrain idea....Try and save 2 and potentially expose 360 million in the process.

If Ebola could start a pandemic it would have done it a long time ago. Africa would be empty.

So why give it a foothold over here at all.

Why were they allowing people to go there to treat infected people and then return home? This seems like basic Outbreak Rules 101.
Because it is relatively easy to prevent infection with proper procedures and it is hard to pass because you have to get their bodily fluids in your system somehow for it to infect you. It isn't airborne.
Luckily doctors don't touch people when they treat them and there are zero cases of care takers being infected and trying to come back to the US.

Oh. Wait...
Doctors without Borders amongst others has been treating Ebola patients for years. The disease is still confined. Oh and doctors have access to these things called disposable gloves for when they touch people. Even in Africa. Weird huh?
oops well there goes that.

What makes you think it will get a foothold? I mean seriously hospitals treat people with deadly infectious diseases every day. You guys may have seen a movie or two too many.

It seems to me you may be a bit naïve. I mean it hasn't killed anybody yet and no healthcare workers have caught it and the death toll isn't climbing...Oh wait!

It's not about saving two, it's about inspecting/testing/examining two. Would you prefer to stick your head in the sand and cross your fingers, or would you rather work towards understanding the virus?

Well we already understand it hasn't been contained and that it kills the majority that contract it, violently and quickly....So you all are convinced that there is no better way to fight this but to bring it on our soil. Maybe there is some unstable nuclear warhead laying around in some third world country that we can bring to Manhattan and defuse instead of doing it in place. I mean all these things are foolproof.

Do you believe the laboratories in Africa have the same capabilities to examine and explore the virus that we would have here?

The CDC has basically every disease known to man. I think they know what they're doing.

(Besides that one screwup, of course)

No, but I'd feel a lot better if the infected person has a holding cell that can only be accessed by a person in hazmat gear who is not allowed outside the building.

Nope but they certainly could if we just bring our resources and manpower over there....

I personally am not worried about it and I live in Atlanta... Make you a deal though, if it spreads and I'm vomiting up vital organs, feel free to say I told you so.

Do we know this is where they are bringing them?.......I would imagine they are going to sneak them into an unmentioned location....IE; just some hospital somewhere...Hell they can't even keep staff infections out of hospitals.

Nothing is airborne/contagious.... until it is.

That said I have no problem with bringing in these citizens under direction of the CDC for treatment and study stateside. My guess is they're handing this like it is already airborne and/or more contagious than it actually is.
