Ebola (2 Viewers)

The situation we are seeing right now is what happens when you give common sense the middle finger. Travel incoming from that region should have been locked down a month ago.
He flew in from Brussels...
NBC news said flight originated in Monrovia..
But he entered the U.S. from Brussels.
so? we should be tracking all flights that originate in W Africa.. common sense

Have you ever flown internationally before? Do you think the exact plane that flew from Monrovia to Brussels was the same one that flew from Brussels to Dulles?

yes, many times.. are you saying we can't track where passengers are coming from???

I didn't say that. It was mentioned that we should restrict all incoming flights from that region. The man flew into the U.S. from Brussels. That isn't near Monrovia.

so this infected guy is a Liberian national.. flew from Monrovia to Brussels, then to Dulles, then DFW.. went to the hospital and was released with antibiotics, and later was rushed back to hospital by EMTs... was in contact with numerous people, including neighbors, the EMTs, and at least 5 kids who attended 4 different schools.. not to mention the people on the flights...

yeah, we got a handle on this
From what I'm reading, he helped a dying pregnant woman with Ebola, who was having convulsions, to the hospital on September 15, even helping to carry her. That's noble. But he got on a three flights with long layovers on the 19th and seems to have left that tidbit out in the triage interview. Seems awfully likely this guy knew he was infected, or that he might be. If he fled to the US for better care, he needs to be charged with something.

Charged with what? Didn't he enter the country legally?

Do they know or have they said what the origin of this was in Africa? Monkeys? Birds? What ?
Fruit bats (seriously).
Interesting. Any idea how it got from a fruit bat to a human?Probably something like a bat crapped in the drinking source or on a food source and a human drank or ate after that, but I was curious if it was known specifically.
Sweet, sweet love.
How do you #### a fruit bat?
Slowly, looking deep into its eyes.

There should be a law for willfully traveling in public when you know you ought to be in quarantine. If not, they should make one up.

Again so.......check passports. if it shows you were in that region within 21 days you go into isolation/quarantine until cleared.

Sweet. So now we've gone from restricting flights coming from that region to internment camps?

Don't want to be quarantined don/t travel...Its a privilege to travel from country to country not a right.

We should make every international flight first stop in Guantanamo Bay. If you've been to Africa then you check in for 21 days. BRILLIANT.

Close.....Not every international flight ...just the ones with ebola region travellers...now you are on to something..

Maybe you can volunteer to give Dallas Ebola Man sponge bathes,

I think it would have to be every flight. Because then at what point do you notify the other passengers that they're not going to be landing in Miami, and instead GB, since the person sitting in 23F was in Africa 3 days ago?

Well if this was done properly the person in 23f wouldn't be in 23 f... because he was in africa 3 days ago....he would be in quarantine until cleared and then he can get his 23 f ticket and travel to the US

The US doesn't control who gets on planes in Africa, does it?

I'm pretty sure we can if we want...If Africa wants their people and Airlines to travel to our country they probably have to follow our rules whatever they may be.

I mean, we had a looney tune almost jump the gate into the White House. Is anyone really surprised Ebola hit the continental U.S.?

Or, you know, we just deny travel visas to anyone coming from a country with active Ebola infections. It's way more simple than you guys are making it out to be. You don't need to track flights, set up quarantines, etc. You just protect the people in our country by refusing to offer visas to anyone coming from a country that has Ebola.

Don't introduce rational thinking. Everyone they interview is downplaying the risk. I get that our health system is better and they are likely correct about the small likelihood of a large scale outbreak. I don't think that makes those people he came in contact with while he was sick feel that much better. I don't understand why we wouldn't limit entry to the country to prevent more cases like this.

The # of Ebola deaths in the US is up to zero after all.

I'm sure that would comfort you if you or someone in your family had come in contact with this guy.

I don't think he/they would have a choice..." We would like Manute Bol Airlines to make trips to the United States....Yeah no problem as soon as you satisfy our requirement of proof of quarantine of all of your passengers".

Act of terrorism.......

They sure seem to be downplaying this on the news last night. I hope they are right and we have nothing to worry about. As long as it's not an airborne strain I think it's pretty containable.

I wonder if it can turn airborne? If that happens we are all f'd.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-2777824/Texas-officials-say-80-people-exposed-Ebola-patient-NBC.html

According to this article, up to 80 people have been exposed to this patient. The good news is that if they identify those 80 people they should be able to put a clamp on it. The bad news is that I'm sure there is no way to truly identify every person that was exposed.

I know a lot of people think this is no big deal, as this is the US, and the US can deal with this...But this is a killer virus. Read The Hot Zone if you want to learn about it. The military and gov't were panicking because Ebola was spreading in a bunch of monkeys in a building in Reston.

Now it's out in the open. It's no laughing matter. These 80 people should immediately be quarantined, imo. My question is whether large groups of people are going to be ok with the quarantine that may need to happen if this is going to be stopped.

The bigger risk is that the virus is exploding in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Until travel is stopped from these countries, more infections will happen around the world.

The Texas Department of State Health Services on Wednesday issued a health alert outlining Ebola criteria that health care providers should watch for as they evaluate patients.

Doctors and nurses should look for fever greater than 101.5 degrees coupled with severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or unexplained hemorrhaging, the alert says.

Patients who have those symptoms and who also have been in contact with someone believed to have Ebola or have been in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea or Nigeria in the past 21 days should be considered a person under investigation and should be tested for the disease, the alert says.

The alert notes that the virus does not generally spread through air, water or food, except in Africa, where handling or eating raw bushmeat can spread it.

Leaves room for doubt ....

Does not generally....It does spread through the air in pigs. Their claim is that in a lab environment it's never spread through the air in primates. But read The Hot Zone, and you may wonder whether there is much validity in that. Ebola is a Biosafety Level 4 hot agent. To even work on it in a lab, you have to go through extreme precautions.
