Do we want to try and end it this week since we're losing momentum?

17, 18 tomorrow AM

19, 20 tomorrow PM

21, 22 Wed AM

23, 24 Wed PM

25, 26 Thu AM

27, 28 Thu PM

29, 30 Friday

Then the weekend to finalize it all.

Suppose I'll corner the market on all-girl quartets with songs that sound like cats shrieking.

17th round - Warpaint - "Disco // very" (Unusual song structure)

Song has no discernible verse/chorus structure.  They released a new album the other day but I haven't had a chance to listen yet.  Big fan.  Song is the first 4:02-ish of the video.

18th round - Hinds - "Chili Town" (Harmony)

Seriously may be my favorite album of 2016 thus far.  Maybe I have an odd definition of harmony.  They have pretty much 2 lead singers who sing at times in harmony and at times in some disjointed mess that just plain works.

  • Acoustic Guitar - Feist - "I Feel It All"
  • Electric Guitar
  • Bass Guitar - Tycho - "Awake"
  • Drums - HAIM - "Let Me Go"
  • Piano (Acoustic) - Blood Orange - "Time Will Tell"
  • Keyboard (Electric) - LCD Soundsystem - "All My Friends"
  • Synths (Computer/Synthetic)
  • Strings - Los Campesinos! - "2007, the Year Punk Broke (My Heart)"
  • Woodwind/Saxophone
  • Brass/Horns - Spoon - "The Underdog"
  • Harmonica - The New Pornographers - "War on the East Coast"
  • Non-Traditional Instrument - Amiina - "Seoul"
  • "World" Instrument - Empress Of - "How Do You Do It"
  • Solo Vocal Performance - Male
  • Solo Vocal Performance - Female
  • Harmony - Hinds - "Chili Town"
  • Choir - Kanye West - "Dark Fantasy"
  • Backing Vocal - FIDLAR - "West Coast"
  • Falsetto
  • Intro
  • Song Ending/Coda
  • Bridge - M83 - "Graveyard Girl"
  • Chorus - Rihanna - "Work (feat. Drake)"
  • Crescendo - CHVRCHES - "Clearest Blue"
  • Overall Unique Structure - Warpaint - "Disco // very"
  • Autotune/Processed Vocals - fka Twigs - "Glass & Patron"
  • Sampling
  • Layering
  • Non Musical Sound Effect
  • Mixing/Mastering

Guess I'll keep it going.

19th round - Arctic Monkeys - "Do I Wanna Know?" (Intro)

Simple but classic formula.  Thumping drumbeat and simple-yet-so-catchy guitar riff.  Ominous.  Great album starter.

20th round - Purity Ring - "Flood on the Floor" (Layering)

How many bass and drum tracks can they layer on one song?  It's got a multiple drum machine beats, a sped-up hi-hat, layered backing vocals, and an absolutely killer bass drop.  Sometimes live electronic music doesn't work, but these two make it work amazingly.  Live version may be better than album version, which is definitely a rarity in electronics.

This can go for either world instrument or non-traditonal, but I think I'll move the Decemberists and use this one as non-traditional

“I’m playing floor toms, and I overdubbed a lot of American Indian wood tribal drums. It’s a whole hodgepodge of Kleenex boxes, drums, weird stuff, slapping of lamb chops and things. I got a big leg of lamb in there somewhere – I’m hitting it with a spatula.” [laughs]

17.07 - Fleetwood Mac - "Tusk" - Non Traditional Music Instrument

17.05 - The Barenaked Ladies - Call and Answer (Layering)

I'm not 100% clear on understanding the idea of Layering. So I went with this song. Steven Page is a hugely under appreciated singer.

The song was written by Steven Page and his longtime collaborator, Stephen Duffy. All of the vocals in the song are performed by Page; this includes overlapping vocals, harmonies and octaves, and a call-and-response chorus. This, in addition to a long ad-lib outro makes the song a showcase of Page's vocal abilities. In live performances, the backing vocals were performed by bandmates Ed Robertson and Jim Creeggan. The song seems to be about the reconciliation of a tumultuous relationship.

17.09 - Ending/coda - The Wrens - 13 Months in 6 Minutes

A wren's tail makes up about 1/3rd of the bird's total length but this song by reclusive :nerd: faves The Wrens takes that even further.  The extended coda goes on for three minutes (44% of the song) after the end of a sad tale about the arc of a failed love affair.  It culminates with a surprise verse that ends with the line "let's go back in time".

21.05 - Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby (Sampling)

In no way am I saying that I like this song. I was having a difficult time finding a song that fits the category, as I tend to like the songs that are sampled not the songs that result from the sampling.

What draws me to this song is something that shows my age. I remember seeing this live on SNL (1/12/1991). This was back when Dennis Miller was doing 'Weekend Update' and the normal schedule of the show was to go with the musical guest and then commercial and then Weekend Update. I'll leave the description of the event to Mr. Miller.

“I used to start ‘Weekend Update’ with a rock-and-roll song that would try to hit the ground running. So one time Vanilla Ice was on, and that night he played his Vanilla Ice song [hums opening of “Ice Ice Baby”] and I was just sitting there apoplectic, since I’m a Bowie fan, watching this guy with a fade, you know, of ancient Aztec cave-wall drawings on his sideburns do this. So I opened the news — which happened two minutes later — with Bowie’s song ["Under Pressure"]. And then the crowd went crazy because they knew what I was doing. Then I said, ‘That is a great Bowie song. I bet you somebody copies that one day.’ [Laughs.] I don’t know the kid’s name — Chris, maybe? [Editor’s note: It’s Rob Van Winkle.] — but at the end of the show, when we’re all standing onstage, he came up and shook my hand and said, ‘You got me.’ So he was at least cool about it.”

The other funny thing about the song is Vanilla Ice trying to deny the fact that it was sampled. Here is a short bit of this attempt. Any of you that are far more music-savvy than me, do you hear his difference?

I'm way behind but I'll slowly grab stuff I like.

17.?  Skillet, Feel invincible, bass guitar

I strongly considered taking other songs of theirs but this is more mainstream and less "preachy" than many others.

22.06 - Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Synths

Wonderful 80's song. Annie Lennox has such a great voice.

23.05 - Zedd (w/Matthew Koma, Miriam Bryant) - Find You (AutoTune)

Another song that I found thru my daughter and her love of music. I will admit that I prefer the acoustic version, as it fits my musical tastes more. For those that are wondering where you heard it, it was on the soundtrack for the movie Divergent.

24.06 - Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water (Strings)

Another song that could fit into many different categories (Piano, Male Vocal, Crescendo, etc). One of the best ever.

The Growlers are basically a garage surf band. Their 2013 album "Hung at Heart" was originally produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. After hearing the mix, the band felt it was too far too slick. They walked away from the extra attention an album "produced by the Black Keys" would have brought and remixed the album themselves. It might not have been a great business decision, but it was likely the right music decision. The album sounds like it floated in out of the 60s. I can't imagine the album with a clean modern sound.

17.x  "Naked Kids"- The Growlers (2013) MIX/MASTER

The original song is fine. However, the remix is amazing. This song is a must add to any sex playlist. It's pure sex.

18.x "Something About You (Odesza Remix")- Hayden James and Odesza (2015) SYNTHS

17.01 Overall Unique Structure: "Those Were The Days" Mary Hopkin

A 15th Century folk song updated first in the nineteen-fifties by an English composer, heard ten years later at a small London nightclub by Paul McCartney who then produced it for a Scottish teenager and released on the Apple label. All of those hands make it an unusually put-together song.

Looks like I've got 10 rounds to go.  Let's get started.

21st round - Glasser - "New Year" (Instrument - Woodwind)

22nd round - Araabmuzik - "Electronic Dream" (Sampling)

Fantastic album that straddles the line between EDM and instrumental hip-hop.  This song is a non-stop sample of Oceanlab's "Satellite".  Here's my favorite remix of the original version.

  • Acoustic Guitar - Feist - "I Feel It All"

23rd round - Ryn Weaver - "Traveling Song" (Ending)

Warning - I've never seen this music video before and I just started crying in my office, so maybe don't watch this one at work unless you can close the door.

More pop music.  This song is slower than most of her songs and slower than most of the pop I listen to, but it's a phenomenal song.  The song is written about her dying grandfather.  The last 35 or so seconds of the song are acapella with her singing about her last conversations with him in his dying days (2:49 - 3:24).  On the very last day, he said shoot for your dreams, little girl, to the stars, well I'm taking you with me, now this one is ours....and I know what you'd say, you'd say "on with the show"....so on we go.

I didn't know anything about her before seeing bits and pieces at Bonnaroo 2015, but I wish I had.  This Coachella 2015 performance is fantastic and probably better than the album version, she just barely loses it at the end of the song and starts crying and you can hear her voice crack.  I can't even imagine singing a song like this in front of like 10,000 people.

24th round - Grimes - "Kill V. Maim" (Mixing/Mastering)

I'm not really sure how to draft this one, but this song - like much of this album - is on-point.  Not a note out of place.  Changing vocal pitch, multiple drum tracks, ridiculous background vocals.  Maybe my single favorite artist of the past 5 years.  There is just so much going on in this song, and it is perfect.  Also bonus points for doing most of her own production, though there are some outside mixers/masters involved on this album.

25th round - Japandroids - "Continuous Thunder" (Non-musical sound effect - fireworks)

One of my favorite Japandroids songs, a rare love song from them.  I made sure this was played during dinner at my wedding.

26th round - Tame Impala - "Eventually" (Falsetto)

Not sure if this is really falsetto as he sings only in this range, but I'm going with it.

  • Acoustic Guitar - Feist - "I Feel It All"
  • Electric Guitar
  • Bass Guitar - Tycho - "Awake"
  • Drums - HAIM - "Let Me Go"

28th round - Noveller - "Pulse Point" (Electric Guitar)

Waited a long time on this because I wasn't sure which song to pick.  If she ever comes through your city, she is an absolute must-see.  All-instrumental solo artist, super artsy, she basically makes pedal loops with her guitar and turns pure electric guitar into something totally unique.  The grainy videos projected onto the screen behind her make everything super ominous.  It's hard to explain but it is genuinely probably the most mesmerizing performance I have ever seen.  No other musicians on stage, no other instruments.  It is ####### amazing musicianship.  Here's some random live tracks so you can see what I'm talking about, should anyone actually see this post....

Let's finish this ####.

29th round - LEON - "Tired of Talking" (Female vocals)

Leon is a misleading name because she's a cute Swedish girl.  Potentially on the verge of pop stardom considering she has like 2 million Spotify listeners and only has 1 4-song EP.

30th round - July Talk - "The Garden" (Male vocals)

Hell yeah
