Elements of Rock Era Music draft - Categories firming up, Sign Up here (1 Viewer)

FTR, the band's name is Amiina and the song is "Seoul".  They're a bunch of Icelandic women who play pretty much only instrumentals I think.  I got started on them when I was big into Sigur Ros awhile ago but haven't listened much lately.

I like that you associate the pop songs with me, but I haven't taken a ton of pop yet (and I say this having drafted songs by CHVRCHES, Blood Orange, Rihanna, Feist, and HAIM....), saving my wheelhouse picks til the end. ;)

Great analysis overall.

This is a new song I heard for the first time yesterday. I was having a hell of a time finding a song for choir so when I heard this, I knew it had to be my pick. If for nothing else, it's got to be the newest song drafted....so far.

13.x "Shine" - Mondo Cozmo (2016) CHOIR

I also really had trouble with the non traditional musical instrument. I had heard this song a few times and liked it, but just never registered when thinking about this category until yesterday. The shuffle of money through the cash machine punctuates a Ray Charles sample and a Biz Markie-esque rap sing-song love song to $$$.

14.x "Cash Machine"- Big D.R.A.M. (2016) NON TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENT

I was going to go with the shtick of only drafted songs released after the draft started. That would have been interesting considering I'm struggling in some categories with having everything from the past 50 years available to me.

15th round - Empress Of - "How Do You Do It" (World Instrument - wooden block/xylophone)

You want pop music?  Ask and I shall deliver.

This song is great.  Tough not to dance while listening to it.  And it's heavy on a wood block / wooden xylophone, hope that's "world" enough for the crowd.

I kind of missed Blur at their peak and to be honest, I like the Suede/Pulp, etc... style BritPop bands better, but this one is from last year and I'm a big fan of it. Lots of noise, lots of people doin' themselves in mostly nonsense lyrics and those great backing vocals. The video is predictably bat#### crazy.

uh, uh uh, uh uh uh, uh uh, uh... He goin' to the local o-ohh

15.07 - "Go Out" - Blur - Background Vocals

Psychedelic funk with some EDM elements in there as well. This is a masterclass in layering. A seemingly straightforward funk groove is reinvented repeatedly through the the layering of an endless string of new sounds. At almost no 2 points does the song ever sound the same. Only a nice pair of headphones will do the song justice. Also if the lead vocals sound familiar, its the frontman for Tame Impala.

15.x "Daffodils" - Mark Ronson and Kevin Parker (2015) LAYERING

This is what I have to do to go deep into bands/artists I don't know now that the Hoof is gone (I blame Spotify, and also @JZilla)
All I did was move it.. again.. you dickbags stopped showing up.  Anyway everybody's here, so whatevs

RIP BTW, got like 2 weeks unless somebody ponies up dough.. not it!

I won't be around tonight, it's PM here in Michigan and I doubt anyone was taking this song anyway. For electric guitar I see GnR and Clapton. Powerhouse blues guitar. I am going a different direction. Something simple with a nice tone. It's got great jangle. Also it is kind of a sad surf song which seems to be a genre I especially like (which we will get to more later.)

16.x "Party Police"- Alvvays (2014) ELECTRIC GUITAR

15.02  - Synthesizers - Thomas Dolby - One of Our Submarines

Song and artist weren't on my radar at the start of the draft but I heard it and can't get it out of my head.

It's pretty much all synths except for Dolby's vocals and the tiniest bit of guitar near the middle of the track.  On the bottom, there's a bass synth line from Matthew Seligman of the Soft Boys and Dolby's programmed drums.  In the middle, there's a chord pattern that subtly descends as the song progresses and on top, there's a variety of atmospheric bleeps and whooshes that manage to accentuate the theme without getting ridiculous.

16th round - Tycho - "Awake" (Instrument - Bass Guitar)

Ambient chill guitar rock / electronic instrumental act.  One of the most mesmerizing acts you'll ever see, definitely check em out if you get a chance.  This song is particularly bass guitar heavy.

Live version at KEXP

  • Acoustic Guitar - Feist - "I Feel It All"

16.x "Party Police"- Alvvays (2014) ELECTRIC GUITAR
 Big Alvvays fan

My name is Mr. Ected and I am a Rush Fan. :scared:

I have said this before on FFA that this is one of my favorite Rush songs. In another thread, I mentioned that this one gives me chills almost every time I hear it. The closing song to the  Signals album, the song tells the story of the first Space Shuttle launch in April 1981. The lyrics that Neil Peart wrote do a spectacular job of describing the launch. If you were around at the time, this was a huge deal in the US, in the middle of the Cold War, for thumbing our noses at the evil Communists. The band was at the launch, in a VIP section named 'Red Sector A,' a story for another album.

I have thought that this song could have fit into a number of categories in this draft; but to me the most impressive is how they mixed in the sounds from the launch into the song. They used NASA communications, both PA announcements and communications between NASA and the crew of the Shuttle, as well as other sound effects from the launch to assist in the telling of the story.

If you have never heard this song before, listen to it (especially the beginning) with earphones kinda loud. If the Non Musical Sound Effect was not a category, I would have chosen this song for the Intro category. I love way they mix in the PA announcer with the slowly building music and the helicopter flying from right to left, ending the intro with ‘This is Shuttle Launch Control.’

The outro is also well done. There are many NASA announcements, mostly in correct time with the shuttle making the beginning portion of the flight, as they flew over the Atlantic Ocean. The most clever is a back and forth between NASA and Columbia that went “And we enjoyed the music, Bob” from the shuttle and “We enjoyed it to, we just wanted to share some with you” from the ground.  This comes from a later portion of the flight were NASA Houston woke the astronauts up each morning with loud music.

Sorry for the lengthy description. ;)

14.06 - Countdown - Rush (Non Musical Sound Effects)

DISCLAIMER: I have drank more than last night, wife is in bed and I may offend. Please don't drop out of the draft lol

Here I go again on my own. Going down the only road I've ever known. Like a drifter I was born to... WORK WORK WORK WORK... Good song, one of  the better pop songs of the year, but to be honest, "Take Care" is far and away my Drake/Rihanna jam. Honestly @Steve Tasker you should have known better.

And now we have Royals, by not Lorde. Sorry @Mr. Ected, I'm a big Lorde fan and the original is better than this. Not as good as "Buzzcut Season" or "Team" but still...

Hmm... and now we have a version of "Somewhere Only We Know" by not Keane. I kind of hope its Mr. Ected again and the cover song is shtick because if not, I dunno... and ####, a look at the google doc tells me it's not shtick and it's a @John Maddens Lunchbox pick. I don't know, there are better Lily Allen songs, better Keane songs...

Next up, Money for Nothing. Obviously familiar with this, borderline over played? but still that riff that lead WWF Saturday Night Main Event for so long ago is un####withable, so what was this drafted for... for electric guitar? I can totally see that and would be a fantastic pick in that category to be honest... okay, it's Intro but I still can absolutely not argue with this pick, good job @FUBAR "And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises? Bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee"   I WANT MY MTV.

I'm 10 seconds into the 5th song of this group and I feel like it's the best. But after 20 seconds, it's Run Through the Jungle. It's a good song, the harmonica is definitely very strong, I have no reason to trash talk this song but I don't feel enthused hearing it anymore. #### you classic rock radio.

Okay, now this song is more like it... I hear unfamiliar great guitar songs. Feels late 90s, early 00s. If Jack White was a woman, he would write this, that's a compliment but I don't know who this is and will likely turn out to be Fiona Apple or one of those great singer songwriters who predates White by like a decade and I'll look like a #### again. No seriously, this song is really really good. Love music drafts precisely for finding new #### like this. Love it, not going to place it, spotify says.... "Bird Balloons" by Lady Lamb. So basically, I was right to not know WTF was going on. Still, I'm pegging this an Eephus pick. He has the ear for women with amazing voices... but once again I'm wrong and once again it's @Ilov80s.. thanks for this, great ####### song.

Now, I'm feeling some early 70s. Thinking a Doug B pick... LOL apparently I don't know the intro to Jungleland that well. I love Bruce Springsteen but those first 5 seconds had me off. and even after that I was briefly about to sing "Blue Jean Baby"... anyway, this song is amazing, could be taken in many categories. great pick @Doug B

The Diamondbacks have to be okay enough to beat the Orioles, right?

I think I hear a helicopter. Is this a found sound pick, cause I'm totally going to resort to a car at the start of a song soon. This is another song with an intro I'm not used to hearing but actually know well. #### YOU MARK TRUMBO. Is this a Canadian band? Quick look tells me it's "Fantasy" by Aldo Nova. No wonder I know it well, it's likely obscure everywhere n the world but a classic rock staple up here. I earlier gave Doug B credit for the Money for Nothing intro pick but that was FUBAR and this is Doug B. If we were tim drafting and judging this, i think I may still give FUBAR's Money for Nothing the Edge.

Hey, "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Don't care who drafted, don't care the category, I'm sure it's a great pick because it is so so so so so good.

And now we have Mike + the Mechanics to make me thankful I had a good relationship with my dad before he died, but will I make it through this (drunk) without crying? I can only assume this was drafted for the choir that's about to come. I loved this song when I was younger, probably not my type of music as much anymore but whatever,  it gives an uplifting message of hope and positivity for the most part and I'm all about that. I likely need to pretend it ends before the last verse for that though. And I kind of hate the last verse but that gets into a lot of my own feelings on mortality, children, reincarnation, saccharine songs, and lots of other stuff.

Hey, John Denver... gonna take me home to the place I belong... tough to argue this for acoustic guitar,

So, now we're leading off with one of the best songs of all time and it's not even 10 years old. And I didn't even pick it. In any case, if you somehow skipped over or haven't heard or in any way missed this song, listen to it now but really go to Spotify and listen to the full version because the single version forgets to talk about running out of drugs. Also Jesus Christ, when you google search "All My Friends" something called Snakehips comes up? #### that. Awesome ####### pick @Steve Tasker .

Is this Total Eclipse of the Heart? YES IT IS. So when I was a 18-21 year old student (we can drink up here at 18), I worked at Walmart and when I worked till close on the weekend, me and my friends my age would all go across the road to the pub... which also did karaoke. We  mostly downed pitchers as fast as possible and went to the clubs because youth, but I'd be lying if I said we didn't sing a lot. My go to then was Pour Some Sugar On Me. Once I signed up and got Total Eclipse of the Heart and this older woman lost her mind on me. Apparently, I had stolen HER SONG and she was livid. I had no idea, but you can bet I nailed every note, while she got up in my face accosting me. This story is all true but in my mind I nailed it, I may have butchered it completely - but the crowd - made up of all my friends loved every second. I think the whole thing is caught on video and photo. Shoutout @Encyclopedia Brown for the memories.

And now we have Graveyard Girl by M83. Second song of the draft (at least ) taken by Tasker that he maybe could have heard at Wayhome this year but I don't think they actually played this one, unless I can't remember (read: was blackout drunk). In any case, I think we can all agree that he needs to be there again next year, correct? Should likely make it a FBG event/cornhole. I already weaned my festival partner in this year with 3 internet strangers, so what's a few more? I've said nothing about this song but it is extremely incredible.

We have a pretty good contrast of different decades in this draft. Makes for a great shuffle listen. I have no idea what this is. A ska song about the North Pole? I remember JML commenting about his first though being ska for a (presumably horn) category, Also some pretty good guitar happening in this. LOL and just to prove how good at this I am, it's @sn0mm1s and in the category harmony, so... Also should my mention reel sn0mm1s in, you owe several picks.

And now it's Kanye West with a Yeezus song, "Bound 2". Pretty great samples here, hoping this was taken there and betting @Ilov80s because ST already took Dark Fantasy. Did he just say he wanted to #### her in the sink. It is the 80slover and it is for samples, can't argue with it one bit. My goal was to highlight what made grea songs great and this song is great and very largely because of je samples.

Plenty of choices for male vocalist, but I'm going old school. Passion, tenderness and emotion never sounded better than

14.08 - Otis Redding - These arms of mine - Solo vocal performance - Male
The story goes Otis wasn't scheduled to record on this session. He was the driver for another band and, when they finished their session and still had time on the clock, Otis asked if he could give it a try. This record was the result, jump-starting the career of one of the great voices in music history.

Otis Redding was, to me, everything a singer should be: honest, emotional, and able to bring it. I've thought about which songs I'd pick in various categories if I were in this draft and JML's pick is the one I'd first thought of for this one.

"Step back, can't get spunk on the mink" Kanye is a ridiculous person, but yeah he definitely knows how to sample. Also, I hope you get tight again tonight. Your buzzy reviews have been the best part of the draft.

Otis and Van IMO were the two greatest male singers of the rock/blues/soul/r&b genres.

Yeah, it did reel me back in. I have had a couple of busy weeks. Here is me catching up. It looks like I owe 8.

9.10 - Harold Faltenmeyer - Axel F- Keyboards (electronic), I think as a kid everyone with an electric keyboard tried to figure this out at least once.

10.1 - Lawsuit - Don't Go To London - Horns, unfortunately, this band was never much more than a NoCal band and I usually try to make sure the music is at least on Spotify. Their music is great but I doubt you are finding it anywhere mainstream so, if you want to hear it, you have to go to some late 1990s looking website and stream it. It does appear you can name your price and get their album.

11.10 - Blondie - Maria - Solo Vocal Female - Not much to say other than I love the song.

12.1 - Loch Lomond - Wax and Wire - Falsetto

13.10 - Guns N Roses - Welcome to the Jungle - Intro, still awesome nearly 30 years later

14.1 - Violent Femmes - American Music - Song Ending, Coda, my obligatory Violent Femmes pick

15.10 - Of Monsters and Men - Mountain Sound - Crescendo

16.1 - M.I.A - Paper Planes - Non musical sound effect

Busy day for me today as well. Let's try to get everyone to the end of round 16 today.

Do we want to try and end it this week since we're losing momentum?

17, 18 tomorrow AM

19, 20 tomorrow PM

21, 22 Wed AM

23, 24 Wed PM

25, 26 Thu AM

27, 28 Thu PM

29, 30 Friday

Then the weekend to finalize it all.

I wasn't sure what to take for the "bridge" category, then this song came across my iPod today. The section from about 1:08-1:50, starting with "Never Say Hello..." and carrying through the guitar solo, I assume pretending to know about bridges.

16.04 - "Danger Zone" - Kenny Loggins - bridge

Here are my two to catch me up. Not a bad pair of bands, both songs could fit into many categories.

15.05 - The Beatles - Love Me Do (Harmonica)

16.06 - Pink Floyd - Money (Non Traditional Instrument)

One of the most distinctive elements of "Money" is the rhythmic sequence of sound effects that begins the track and is heard throughout the first several bars. This was created by splicing together recordings [Roger] Waters had made of clinking coins, a ringing cash register, tearing paper, a clicking counting machine and other items to construct a seven-beat effects loop.
from Wikipedia.

16.02 - Female Vocals - Throwing Muses (Tanya Donelly) - Not Too Soon

Donelly doesn't have the greatest female voice of all time.  She arguably didn't even have the greatest female voice in this band but her vocal carries this track from start to finish.

The snarling wordless hook that follows "I know her" in the chorus is so cool the lead guitar apes it the third time through.  She also gets a breathy spoken bit and a double time section that functions like a rap.

I've always loved this song.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this is correct, thru Round 16.

Picks still to be made
FUBAR – 15.02, 16.09
JML - 15.03, 16.08
DougB - 11.04, 12.07, 13.04, 14.07, 15.04, 16.07
Encyclopedia Brown - 14.10, 15.01, 16.10
