Eli Manning (1 Viewer)

Ha! What a pathetic attempt against the Panthers. How did the entire team play horribly at home, in the biggest game of the season for them? Eli Manning really doesnt know hwo to play QB. After throwing 3 picks, and fumblining once, he has proven that he isnt worthy of having the last name manning.

Ya and Tiki is the worst RB in the NFL?

But I thought Joey Harrington was?wait, no...it's Aaron Brooks....no, it's Kerry Collins...no, it's Kyle Boller....no, it's Brooks Bollinger....no, it's Chris Simms......no, its david Carr....

The guy is in his second year. Maybe it's because he's a Manning that this is being said in the first place, but I don't think he's overrated. You could do a lot worse than Manning at QB and I think he's a top 7 guy in two years. His bro wasn't too stellar in his second year either.

I am no Eli fan (nor do I even like the Giants), but I think he has done a pretty good job in his 2nd year.I think the earlier poster hit on it, because of his name, the expectations are higher. The Giants improved this year and will continue to do so. Their franchise is at least moving in the right direction. Now, if we are having this discussion in 2 years, then I will agree that Eli is a bust.

Eli's mechanics are horrible, but so was his Oline today. Throwing off the back foot and attempting to throw while rolling away from hits all day will lead to bad things. Combine that with two knucklehead go to guys in Burress and Shockey who will not always bring their A game and you have the potential for a long day. Eli will improve when his line improves, he learns to read Ds better, and he learns to step up and show some EMOTION and ACT LIKE A LEADER. This little boy scout quiet demeanor BS needs to be dropped off on the side of the road. Its time for him to step up and INSPIRE people. A long offseason of bad taste will probably help.

Isn't he in the playoffs quicker than his brother ever did? Just curious...Not a fan of Eli. I was one of the few that thought Eli would simply be an average QB in the NFL, but even I would cut him some slack. He's young, and needs time to develop..

Looks like the 5 digiters are out in force today. Huddle down?
Love it. In his 2nd year he got them into the playoffs. Had 3762 yards passing. 5th in the league. Tied for 4th for TD passes with 24 and ran for another. The kid had 17 Ints but will only get better. E Manning is going to be a great QB. Not as good as his brother but up there.

Get your facts straight!RAPTURE

This is probably one of the dumbest posts ever. NFL QBs don't develop over night. This guy is in his second year. Eli got very little help as the Panthers dominated on both lines of scrimmage. Whatever. As a keeper owner of Eli, he showed me enough in his second year. ProsGood work ethic - lots of pub about his film workGood team guy - his team mates rallied around him all yearFearless - had some bad games, but kept firingConnections - developed a good rapport with Shockey and Burress"It factor" - He directed quite a few 4th Qtr comebacks. Kid had some impressive outings, especially early in the season.ConsMechanics - His foot work needs improvement - no doubtVision - has to work on getting through his progressions and seeing the entire fieldFootball IQ- Needs to learn when to throw the ball away vs. forcing things or taking a sack in a critical situation.I believe all of the cons are things he can improve upon in the off-season and in training camp next year. Does anyone doubt the kid won't be studying film and drilling in the interim to get better?

Pros

Good work ethic - lots of pub about his film work

Good team guy - his team mates rallied around him all year

Fearless - had some bad games, but kept firing

Connections - developed a good rapport with Shockey and Burress

"It factor" - He directed quite a few 4th Qtr comebacks. Kid had some impressive outings, especially early in the season.

Cons

Mechanics - His foot work needs improvement - no doubt

Vision - has to work on getting through his progressions and seeing the entire field

Football IQ- Needs to learn when to throw the ball away vs. forcing things or taking a sack in a critical situation.

I believe all of the cons are things he can improve upon in the off-season and in training camp next year. Does anyone doubt the kid won't be studying film and drilling in the interim to get better?
CONS: Throws a wounded duck more often then not.Far from fearless runs and throws scared when the pocket starts to break down.

I never saw a guy throw off his back foot so much in my life. Im sure the coaching staff will correct that though. It was only his 2nd year.

One thing to get straight. The Giants made the playoffs DESPITE Manning not because of him. Barber carried this team on his shoulders all year.

As Jimmy Johnson pointed out, Peyton lost his first 3 playoff games..give Eli some time, for pete's sake..where were you boo-birds when they clobbered washington 36-0 a few weeks back, why didn't we hear anything from you then?? don't forget how many td passes shockey dropped this year, which would've bolstered Eli's stats somewhat. as far as Eli throwing off his back foot, I remember Kurt Warner making a living throwing off his back foot in St lou, where he won a Superbowl ( nearly 2 SB's), a Superbowl MVP, and 2 NFL MVP's...Yes, Barber carried the Giants. But in only his first full season as a starting QB, Eli did very well...Look, was bradshaw any good in his first 3-4 seasons? heck no..was Peyton? no. was Steve Young? nope. Phil Simms? nope. look how long it took rich gannon before the light went on in his head..unfortunately, not every QB that comes down the turnpike can be another joe montana or dan marino. it takes time to develop a QB..Despite all this, Eli finished 5th in the NFL in yards passing, 6th in passing tds..he also finished 23rd in passer rating, so he needs to be more efficient and make better throws..but the fact that he tossed 24 tds to 17 ints in just his first full season as a starter, is very encouraging!

do you fall down a lot?

Weren't previous discussions about Plex and Shockey both getting double teamed, allowed Tiki to run amok?

I guess you didn't see (or don't remember) Jim "Chrissie" Everett his last few years with the Rams. Throws off the back foot was why Jim Rome gave him the nickname.

Peyton's second year- 331 533 62.1 4135 7.8 26 15

Eli's Second year- 294 558 52.7 3762 6.7 24 17

And I'm a Giant fan. Peyton was well on his way his 2nd year. Eli, maybe not so much.

Also, I might add, the Giants gave up a 1st, 3rd and 5th when Big Ben was very much available.

I'm not saying Eli's a bust, but I am somewhat concerned.

No Manning has ever won anything.
yet(2 league MVPs isn't too shabby though)
I'm obviously referring to a big game etc. Nobody can argue with Peyton's numbers. I do know that he couldnt win the big game in college or the pros (so far) and that Tee Martin won a National Title with Peyton's team. (Archie never even had a winning pro record.) Eli was drafted for his pedigree, right?

None of Peyton's playoff wins constitute a big game? Would you draft Rypien, Jim McMahon, Doug Williams, or Trent Dilfer over Marino?

If it meant winning 4 Super Bowls instead of none, yes, although Marino did get to the dance. Peyton has a monkey on his back and needs to get rid of it by either getting to the Super Bowl or beating the Pats in the playoffs. I'm not trying to take a shot at him really, but he has a rep. of not pulling it off in the high pressure games i.e. Florida and New England. Now, he has the #1 seed, let's see what he can do with it.

Good Post. For a qb in a second year to post 24 td's and over 3000 yd's passing is a good sign of thing to come. Here are the reasons he will be a top ten qb next year and a top 5 qb afterwards.

1/ His mechanics will improve. You know his father will work with him this summer.

2/ He will only get better at reading defenses.

3/ He will have even better rapore with his receivers and will have another year

experience with the offensive cordinator.

4/ He has a great rb in Tiki Barber.

5/ Good composure. He has shown great composure in leading his team to come

back wins late in games.

6/ He has the respect of the veterans on this team.

7/ He has the physical abilities and arm strenght to play in the NFL.

Look at Mcnabb. It took a few years for him to develope. Elway, Aikman and Young all had to have thier time in the barrel before they became great qb's and leaders. The people on this board who say that he is a failure already in only his second year either don't have a clue. Also and not to make excuses, but I watched the game and saw Plexico run short of his passing route at least three times that I remember. What is it with this guy anyway? I have watched enough of this guy and think he is just afraid of going over the middle and getting hit. All things considered, he is a great keeper and will be at least a top ten qb next year.

Is it me, or does anyone else look at Eli and think he's just a big baby. Everytime I look at him after he does something wrong, he looks like he's going to go cry to his daddy. Maybe it's me, but he looks like a whiner from high school days.

Yes, it's you. I've watched him play a few times on tv last year and didn't see it. I'm not a Giants fan but I just think that it's a bit premature to start calling him a failure due to one game. Would you care to elaborate on your statement or are you just fishing?

I'm sure he'll cry over his 2 SB rings and new camaro.

Wow, we're bumping a thread from six years ago now?
While I wouldn't do it, it does seem well deserved. Some good crow to be served...
My problem with this kind of thing is that for every bump someone does to rub it into another person's face, they no doubt have an equally damning proclamation that could be thrown back into their face. Being a sports fan -- particularly in this era -- is about being a prisoner of the moment. We're naturally inclined to figure out everyone's place in the historical landscape based on our feelings about what JUST HAPPENED, and that leads to a lot of declarations that look bad years later. But no one ever wants to hear/say/read, "it's too early to say" or "we'll know that years from now."

I wrote this six years ago, and am as big a Giant fan as there is. The one thing that I find fascinating is that the same things that frustrated me then is what impresses me now. His general nonchalance under all circumstances I think Damone said it best-

"The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. Whatever happens, your toes are still tapping."

Eli on 2nd & 8 in the first Q at midfield is no different than Eli in the 4th Q down a score with the length of the field ahead of him
